In the short stroke his thumb is at the top of his swimsuit on exit. In the longer stroke it is well below the bottom of his suit. That's a difference if at least 6 inches. That final part of the stroke is when the arm is accelerating which makes it even more powerful.

Watching this video gave me a boost in motivation. A great tip that my coach gave me is to have a calm mind. Practice and master in isolation and then when swimming without any aid, don't think too much. Be confident and smooth.
