Titebond III will become gelatinous when cured at any age in ethanol, no flame and naturally heat will evaporate the solvent. The solubility is low but I do not know the rate. I have not tried any other solvent. If you add water to the gelatinous solution or to the you will get a messy ppt, unless that is what you want.

They are so beautiful that they deserve to be on display permanently as museum pieces. As a lover and admirer of traditional European marquetry work I say: MAGNIFICENT! Thank you for creating such wonderful works of art. These boxes deserve to be in the Wallace collection or the Musée Carnavalet in Paris.

OK, it is easy to understand how to soak through a veneer. But I have bene trying to figure out how to soak through a thick ebony guitar bridge. The water simply won't soak through. So, the only thing I can come up with is to rout it off (ruin the original bridge) until there's basically a veneer thickness left, and then soak that leftover layer. Do you have any better tips and ideas? Thanks.

I have a question. I have a valuable instrument pedal made in the 1960s in England that has a rubber foot pad that needs to be reglued. Its very similar to a shoe tread and will be mated to a painted metal shell. From the pictures I see of similar old pedals the manufactuer was using some type of brown glue that seems to sort of leak/run/expand over time. That or the rubber shrank. Would this glue be good for restoration?

Hello. About 40 seconds in the video, Patrick shows the central brass catch spring. It has a filed "hook" in it that catches on a plate no the bottom of the drawer. when you press the button the spring lower the catch no longer hold on tho the plate and the drawer is ejected by the action spring. Hope this helps! you might see some more in this videos kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYHWY2N3apiVi7c kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYPVooyNdpmfoJY

So I’m so new at all of this, please forgive my ignorance!! I’ve broken apart a wood chair and cleaned out the screw spots of slightly broken wood. I’m ready to glue using OBG and with straps and clamps. My question is should I go ahead and re-set my screws or wait 24 hours until the glue dries?
@3815utah
@3815utah Жыл бұрын
Hello Larry, I would wait on putting the screws as it might be better for future restoration to have them not glued in and easily removable. That said, sometime with difficult clamping I would maybe put back couple screws to help.

Thanks a lot! Do you have a problem with hide glue odor? I always have problem with the glue i make, even though the temp doesn’t rise above 140 degrees, although the dry glue I purchased had an unpleasant odor. Is there any method to enhance the smell? Many thanks!
@theebeniste3072
@theebeniste3072 Жыл бұрын
Hide glue is not super pleasant, but people usually get used to it fairly rapidly. What kind of smell are you talking about, some smells may mean different things. It should not smell rotten or ammonia, that's for sure.

This video was posted on june 6, 2013 ... almost 10 years ago ... and I've just bought my first small bottle of OBG a month ago from 'my man in Berlin; Dieter Schmid'. I have just the project to test it out on nearing glue-up now: copies of (missing) architectural wall-paneling (wainscoting ?) from ca. 1820. I'll need at least some open time (working alone) but slow-cure epoxy just feels wrong so I'm looking forward to giving OBG a go. I have a hunch it'll be a very useful addition to my glueing repertoire :-) Much impressed by your work ! I have so much to learn, but so little time. Best regards from a Norwegian woodwoker.

Thanks for the video. Found you on FWW and was inspired by Steve Latta to use hide glue on my next project, a Federal style demilune card table. I've done some veneering already, and make my own so it's thicker than "store bought" veneer. But he uses hide glue for veneering and making banding (sometimes). There's still a place for PVA in my shop but I've already bought a double boiler and this afternoon it's down to Woodcraft to get some 192g granules. I'm making my own veneer hammer and had a question about the one you used: how wide is it? I was thinking of making two hammers, one about 3" and one about 2". Yours appears to be the smaller size on that project. I guess use whatever squeezes the glue out best? Thanks again for all you do for the woodworking community!

Just an idea, when I pour out the glue, after it cools and jells I cut it up into smaller pieces while it's still playable, it will dry faster and I don't have to try and break it up once it's rock hard. Another trick, I have an old box fan that I lay flat ( make sure to allow plenty of air flow through the fan) and set my screen on top of it, set it on low, it will dry the glue incredibly fast. If you use a food dehydrator, do NOT use the heat setting, it will melt the glue, and take my word for it, it's a mess. One last thing, you may have heard or read "not to use hide glue during a thunderstorm" in my personal experience this is absolutely true, I've done it, and it will not jell. I make my own glue, and have been cooking it during a storm and ended up with nothing but slime, and I have glued pieces during a storm and the will not set, maybe it's me, but this has been my experience. I've been using hide glue for over 20 years, and I love it.

I once was gluing up a project with through tenons that I pushed my luck on and made a hair too tight so that, when the glue was applied and the wood swelled, I cracked one element with a mortise. Since I was assembling with PVA glue, I felt that, if I disassembled, and made a new piece, I'd never really be able to reassemble the good joints because the PVA would have dried on the joint surfaces and, unlike hide glue, will not reactivate. So, I glued it all up and kept the item for my own use. At that point, I learned my lesson and started switching over to using hide glue. Now, if I hit a snag gluing up, there's a good chance I can have a second try. It's rare to need that, but often there is so much on the line at glue up, so much time invested, that I'm just more comfortable.

We do a lot of veneering, one of the treasure box II marquetry panels' sides slipped, thanks to old brown glue I was able to lift the panel and re-glue it at its proper place. Then on the first treasure box III, I miscalculated the placement of the 2 side marquetry panels. once again thanks to Old Brown Glue I was able to lift it and save the work.

Hi Patrick, I have a chair glue up tomorrow and I want to use OBG, I was wondering how long I should leave it in clamp? also, should I use it just for restoration or can I use it for any other project?
@theebeniste3072
@theebeniste3072 2 жыл бұрын
Hello. We usually leave things clamped overnight. Set time varies with elements like temperature so it is hard to give a set answer. If you look at our treasure box presentation videos you can see we use OBG for making furniture, not only restoration. Best Patrice Lejeune.
