Imagery is great. Watching the Dead-end Kids ascend the basement stairs with the shadows of the grate upon the wall is stirring.

The dead end kids were bullying Humphrey Bogart ..they knew he was only tough on screen n from blue blood ...Cagney slapped them around real fast ..he was raised in Hell's kitchen n knew how to fight

Very few young film fanatics nowadays know the name of Michael Curtiz but my god what a career he had He directed the Adventures of Robin Hood, Casablanca, White Christmas, Angels with Dirty Faces and Yankee Doodle Dandee to name a few. His staging and presentation of this scene is one of his finest cinematic moments. He and Victor Fleming were the Spielberg's of their day but their names have faded into history. But their movies haven't. They will live forever.

Who else can out-tough Bogie but Mr. Yankie Doodle Dandy himself. Cagney is force to be reckoned with.

Did he really have a gun in his pocket? It appeared that he didn’t and only had the candy, but being a gangster he did have a gun so why didn’t he produce one?

The ironic thing about this is that Cagney preferred to stay at home and read books while Pat O'brien loved going out and was fond of the drink and partying.

I like how some folks, when Rocky starts pleading for his life, think it's an act and he's "Coming through" for his friend. Another reading might be that it was for real, and it was god coming through in the end for the Dead End Kids.
