@@robotbobby7354 The point of the ending is that we do NOT KNOW why he behaved that way. There is NO evidence we can point to either way...Did Cagney repent of his tough-guy attitude, and decide that being a criminal who is a hero to poor kids was NOT a good thing for those poor kids? OR was Cagney NOT the tough-guy he pretended to be, and his behavior was genuine? we have no way to know.
@robotbobby7354
@robotbobby7354 2 жыл бұрын
@@essessessesq the first possibility is moot because cagney led to material improvements in the poor kids' lives, which the priest does not and will not do, and the second possibility is horrifying as the priest relishes cagneys true suffering. each way is a "bad" ending (not in terms of quality)
@essessessesq
@essessessesq 2 жыл бұрын
@@robotbobby7354 Cagney always said he would NEVER play a criminal who was glorified as a hero. He said that his Catholic morality would not let him act in a film where the bad guys WON. He said he would not give a bad lesson to young people. That probably explains why the character here ends as being shown to be a COWARD who was not tough. Cagney ends the character as not being a hero to those poor kids. The character either faked it for the kids, or he actually was NOT so tough. Either way, Cagney had his way, and the violent criminal character was NOT a hero

If you ever get in a argument with no way out ,just kick the other guys shin bone with edge of your shoe, and either ( while he is stunned ) hit him in the face ,or run. Last guy I did it to years ago had to go for medical treatment, because unlucky for him I was wearing heavy duty Biker Boots.lol

Jay Lawrence plays a POW in Billy Wilder's Stalag 17. He entertains the other prisoners with an uncanny Cagney impersonation. Particularly impressive ,in that, he does not resort to the lame "you dirty rat" cliche that most comics do.

Funny you should mention that, I loved doing that. But one day it resulted in a broken collar bone. My bad, shouldn't have been playing with kids twice my size and twice as mean.

Today a coach would never get away with that kind of hard physical contact with kids. It is considered abuse in the 21 century. Yes other than that, I love the rest of the flim!
