In this scene, Rocky Sullivan steps in as referee when Father Jerry can't handle the kids. Movie: Angels with Dirty faces (1938) Great scene. Awesome movie, one of my favourite. -The clip belongs to WB.

OR was Cagney NOT the tough-guy he pretended to be, and his behavior was genuine? we have no way to know.

@@essessessesq the first possibility is moot because cagney led to material improvements in the poor kids' lives, which the priest does not and will not do, and the second possibility is horrifying as the priest relishes cagneys true suffering. each way is a "bad" ending (not in terms of quality)

@@robotbobby7354 Cagney always said he would NEVER play a criminal who was glorified as a hero. He said that his Catholic morality would not let him act in a film where the bad guys WON. He said he would not give a bad lesson to young people. That probably explains why the character here ends as being shown to be a COWARD who was not tough. Cagney ends the character as not being a hero to those poor kids. The character either faked it for the kids, or he actually was NOT so tough.
