The crack to leo gorceys face by cagney was improvised. He never saw it coming. Great acting. I watched this movie a hundered times and didn't realize billy halop motioned to leo to shake cagneys hand. My focus was strictly on Cagney and Gorcey. Great actors adlibbing.

Cagney gave Gorcey and elbow above the nose Gorcey and the rest of the Bowery boys caused havoc on the set And kept ad libbing I think it’s the scene in the basement after the robbed Cagney Gorcey ad libbed and Cagney gave him a forearm right above his nose Gorcey and the rest of them never ad libbed again Gorcey also hated Cagney for the rest of his life

The critics overrated some extremely popular actors of that era, you know all the names, but they underrated James Cagney because he was so appealing to a working class audience and the critics were as big a snobs then as they are now. Orson Welles set them straight. The critics worshipped Welles because he was erudite and a motion picture genius, but he went on a talkshow and called Cagney the greatest film actor he had ever seen.

I actually heard that Cagney punched Leo Gorcey in the face during production for real when Leo kept flubbing his lines! After that, it never happened again!

I read that these mugs was messing wit Bogey during the filming and got away with it, but when they tried with Cagney, especially Leo Gorcey, Cagney put him and the other dead end kids in their place.

Gorcey and the rest of the Bowery boys were terrors on the set Going after the adult actors and constantly ad libbing In one scene Gorcey ad libbed a line And Cagney hits him right above the nose Gorcey and the rest of the Bowery Boys Never ad libbed again They forgot Cagney was also from the streets of Manhattan Gorcey hated Cagney for the rest of his life. Bit he loved Bogart.
