I will be doing something similar next month. It is better to rent a suv or will a small car do?. What app do you use for navigation? Do you prebook your accommodation or as you go? Thanks!
@notlostadventures20 күн бұрын
We rented a 4 door Toyota sedan. It was a little underpowered on the hills, but overall was fine. We didn't feel like we needed an SUV. We used Google maps for navigation and can only think of a couple of times when we are out of cell range. Otherwise Google maps worked well. We tended to book our accommodation a day or two in advance and in early December that seemed ok. The only places we did not book in advance where at Pha Hi and Ban Rak Thai because it just seemed really hard to book online. We just showed up and found a place to stay. Hope you have a great trip. Northern Thailand is so beautiful. Happy to answer any other questions.

Lovely video. How much did the long tail cost to Koh Kradan?
@notlostadventuresАй бұрын
Thanks for watching. I don't remember the exact cost for the long tail to Koh Kradan, but I don't remember it being very expensive. We booked a private all day trip through Boonchu Tour and Transfer, which is one of the travel agents on the island just on the main street. They were really helpful. We also booked our speedboat tickets to Koh Lipe through them.

Thank you for the great video series! We plan to do the second half of you trip on January. We want to be a bit flexible with the timings but we are worried if we should book our accommodation in advance. From your experience, should we be able to just visit a town and find some hotel on the same day or we should try to prebook everything just to be safe?
@notlostadventures2 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for watching. The road trip was from December 5 -20 (high season) and we also wanted to be somewhat flexible and so only booked our accomodations about 1-2 days in advance. We didn't have any problems with booking places (mostly used Agoda) except we found that on the weekends things were a little more booked up. We had a hard time booking online for the village of Pha Hee and so just showed and found something pretty easily. Happy to answer other questions. Have a great trip, you will love northern Thailand.

I just got back from Thailand and toured this area, largely because of your videos. I took the overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, then started driving to Chiang Dao and onwards. I downloaded and used your maps to navigate and did the northern section from Mae Salong to the Golden Triangle. Then I went to Chiang Rai and then into Lao and did the slow boat. I had a reservation at the Ama Mae Salong, however about a week before I left, I got an email from them telling me that they had to cancel me because they were doing electrical work or something. Instead, I located the Wang Put Tan Tea Plantation which was not that far from Mae Salong. Let me tell you, it was excellent!! It was a little hard to find by car, but I convinced Google Maps to cooperate and I found it. It was gorgeous!! I think the place is mainly a restaurant, but they also have 7 or 8 cabins on the side of one the hills and the views were spectacular. So, for the (inexpensive) price of a room, you actually get your own cabin, complete with a deck overlooking the view. I think I booked them through Agora. If you are ever back in the area, you should check it out. Even if you just stop by for a pot of tea or a meal. And thanks for your videos and maps. You made my vacation!!

I am going to Northern Thailand in July. I am using all your videos to figure out where to go. I notice a lot of people drop the S in Laos. Is that the correct pronunciation? Lao?
@notlostadventures7 ай бұрын
I am so glad you found the videos helpful. The lovely thing about travelling in July will be how green rice fields will be. I hope you have a great trip. In my videos I pronounced Laos with both the S and then dropped the S and I am still unclear which is correct. 🙄

@notlostadventures8 ай бұрын
Statistically, Thailand has a high rate of traffic fatilities, so it is less safe than other places. Mountain roads in the north are often quite narrow and twisty, people often pass dangerously. We were surprised at how well paved most of the roads were, and the traffic outside of major areas was quite light. I wouldn't hesitate to drive again. The only big animals we saw were some elephants in the river beside the road. They were not wild, but part of a sanctuary.
