I've lost count of how many times I've watched this video, the techniques shown here are too valuable and I mean all of them, thanks Crafsman :D👍

At this point you should give a course or write a book. You're a fountain of knowledge when it comes to toy making. I hope you do!

This really makes me want to do this for kitbashing custom figs for mini gaming. How cool would it be to make an army of chibi Necrons!?!?

You could also slip cast dental stone. Also about a decade ago there was a ring opening PET plastic you could cast as a liquid and then catalyze with heat. But they shut down. It would probably be more friendly than plastisol.

Embed fabric in the silicone to keep it from tearing especially where it joins the pan

Hey Daniel! That can actually work - thanks. You can also use a wire mesh (careful to manage the pointy ends) in cases where you really need a larger cavity to stay in an open position, without a super thick mold.

This is cool and all, but 3d modelling + 3d printing makes all of this obsolete.

Hey there! The closest thing I can think of is this one person I saw 3D print a sofubi mold to be used in plastisol, but the molds only hold up to *one use*. And as far as "printing sofubi", the 3D print resins are getting closer in feel, getting tough enough to flex, but are not tried and true like vinyl/PVC. We still don't know how long UV-cure resins will hold up, will they keep paint without sweating during shipping, what kind of off-gassing happens, will the material get brittle, etc. I will grant that 3D modelling, yes, has basically replaced traditional hand sculpting. But the main point of this is pulling true soft vinyl from cheap molds, repeatedly. :) Thanks for watching!

@@TheCrafsMan I'll take practical effects over CG in a movie any day, and I'll always appreciate handmade more than machined toys. This stuff will never be obsolete, even if we could print sofubi. :)

AMAZING!! Finally, someone that shows us how to solve a major problem!! I've asked so many Creators where they got their paint masks and I get the same answer and that is "oh, they were expensive to get made" but, they never, ever say who made the masks. Sometimes I would not get an answer. Thank you Crafsman!!😁

PLASTISOL "CASTING" STEPS AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: - (OPTIONAL) VACUUM DEGASS PLASTISOL - (NOT AS IDEAL AS PULLING WHILE IN THE MOLD, BUT AN ALTERNATIVE FOR THOSE WITH SMALL CHAMBERS). - POUR PLASTISOL IN MOLD. - (OPTIONAL) PLACE PLASTISOL-FILLED MOLD INTO VACUUM CHAMBER AND DEGASS (I PULL FOR 5 MINUTES). - PLACE PLASTISOL-FILLED MOLD INTO OIL/HEAT. I USE 375 DEGREES OR 190 CELSIUS. - (IMPORTANT) THIS PART MAY TAKE 30 ~SECONDS~ TO A MATTER OF MINUTES, DEPENDING* ON HOW THICK A PART YOU WANT. - REMOVE THE MOLD FROM THE VAT AND DRAIN EXCESS PLASTISOL INTO A CATCH CONTAINER, FOR REUSE. - PLACE MOLD WITH NOW-HOLLOW PLASTSOL PART BACK INTO OIL/HEAT. - (IMPORTANT) THIS PART MAY TAKE A FEW ~MINUTES~ OR MORE - AGAIN, DEPENDING*. - REMOVE THE MOLD FROM HEAT AND DIP IN WATER (OR SPRAY INSIDE OF MOLD WITH AIR) TO COOL. - PULL THE CURED (BUT STILL SOFT WHEN WARM) PLASTISOL PARTS FROM MOLD. - (OPTIONAL) CUT FLASH AND EXCESS PLASTIC WHILE WARM. - CLEAN PARTS FREE OF ANY OIL OR RESIDUE. * NOTE: Plastisol cooks/cures differently based on these factors: Plastisol type, mold size, and heat.

Crafsman vids are always the right vibe. I didn't really have that much interest in sofubi toys so I may not have checked out some of the latest vids, but the production is always the best and you can't help but become interested. I felt that elation when the arm popped into the socket 🚀

Have you ever tried electroplating? HEN3DRIK, another creator, has lots of videos on the subject. Could you use similar techniques to get that shiny metal gloss? I wonder how it compares to your high gloss vinyl spray paint.
