I recently read a book on the B52 and they pointed out that, during much of the cold war, the US had a number of nuclear armed aircraft in flight at all times within a few moments striking distance of Soviet targets. I suspect a similar operational scenario was in place for the SSBN fleet (far less detectable). Although the portrayed scenario was possible, I consider it's success to the enemies advantage, to have been far less likely than indicated.

How it gets reported and responded to: PAVE PAWS detect the ICBMs and record confidence. Radars and sensors must not be malfunctioning and show signatures consistent with ICBMs. If it’s consistent, confidence is considered “high”. They will always ask for if it is an exercise. But it is never considered an exercise, even if it is an actual exercise. PAVE PAWS report to NORAD. NORAD relays the confidence and confirms the results and relays it to the National Command Authority (President, VP, Joint Chiefs of Staff, etc). NCA gives info to DHS start coordinating emergency and evacuation procedures among the civilian populous, meanwhile, NCA gives SAC and Major Commands the orders. SAC/Command structures order scrambling of fighter aircraft, immediate response from B-52 bombers, nuclear submarines and ICBM stations. The Wings and such down the chain launch the nuclear triad and execute.

@@johncresswell-plant2913honestly speaking, once you hear it in the media for a possible incoming attack, and they have checked this, you may have only 5-10 minutes to take shelter. That’s why governments and even in the British nuke-drama, Threads, tell you it’s better to stay at home.

Please, post 41 for freedom, post Trident 1/C4 operational induction, post operational availabilitly of Ohio boomers. Am guessing but its a educated guess there was at 95% confidence there was at least 7 to 9 boomers on hard patrol, maybe more in 1984 at any one time then. With most maybe 60% or more of said boomers on hard patrol tooled up with Trident 1 & all the rest tooled up with Posideon. That at least 1200 to 1700 nukes of which 60% had 50% CEP that could take out ICBM silos harden to 1,800 pounds per square inch or alternative be city killers in a counter value role. So a disarming first counter value strike could potenially take out all US ICBMs & B52/B1/B1B strategic bombers. However this is very unlikely, the US could playuse them or lose them. Even if the worse that could happen, actually did happen. More than 5 or 6 USN Boomers on hard patrol could give near all Ruskies sun tans they rather not have. Capiche Y'All, you can't be easily killed or tracked boomers on hard patrol covered by your SSNs & surface combantants mean a actual real disarming counter force first strike is impossible. Yo, you frakkers have deep secured nuclear superiority then in 1984 & still have it today even if the Ruskies could have 70 to 80% more nuclear warheads/weapons then you Yanks in 7 or 6 years from now. Because of your Boomers & SSN & surface combantants control of the blue waters. It highly resistant toa disarming first counter force strike. However the Russian have enough or much more than enough that will surive a first US counter force strike, not as deep a strategic nuclear capacity & capability as the Yanks but much more than enough to tie the Yanks to MAD. Over the next 7 or 8 years the Russian will narrow the gap btw extant US capabilities now over time for at least the next 7 or 8 years. 😊

This short 1979 movie was actually made by the Rand corporation in partner with the DOD because they were trying to get congress to approve funding for the MX Missile eventually it was built as the Peacekeeper. It had more of an effect in 1983 when it was used in the TV movie "The Day After" Ronald Reagan saw the movie he called the Soviet Leader and started talks to lower the amounts of nuclear weapons.
