Best motor ever! 120 HP per liter is still impressive even in today's supercars! (S2000's engine was developed in the 90s)

125hp per liter in Japan. They had higher compression pistons in the JDM cars.

I remember loathing the news that the Supra would be no more and then Honda released an NA four pot that ran a sub 6 second 0-60 (really quick at that time). I just couldn't wrap my head around what Honda was able to do without a turbo.

Man, no matter how turbo-charged and torque-packed todays cars are, I still love me some 9000rpm.
@Kacpa2
@Kacpa2 8 ай бұрын
They are usually superbly lame to drive, modern turbo 4s sound awful, are characterless and you feel absolutely nothing when driving them. Its as far from true sportscar as it can be. Its was never fully about the specs but more about the sensation and we just lost all of them over last 20 year, MX-5 and GR86 are only cars left even remotely trying to do this and people preffer to mock them as its not as fast "insert a shitty 2010s+ hothatch here", plus even these are somewhat compromised, mostly due to parts sharing with more mundane cars that went through even bigger degradation as we used to have enjoyable "normal" cars back and they are completely ridden of any fun engagement. ND2 is somewhat improved, but Toyota didnt really do all that well with their car, its still sounds awful, has better torque, and mediocre clutch and inputs. Ah and they maded indicator stocks worse(bmw style non-detend shite) so its literarily MX-5 some kit cars like caterham and pretty much it. Unless you go into used and usually incredibly expensive cars like Lotus Elixe/Exige etc, maybe 911 to some extend, but again incredibly expensive and also taxed with modern idiotic NVH-removal focused design that kills the engagement bit by bit.

For all those who say that a Golf GTi is better, let me tell you why it isn't. 1.The S2000 is a convertible 2.The GTi has more power but it has a turbo 3.The S2000 has Honda reliability 4.The GTi can't go up to 9000 rpm (and I know some will reply "yes mine can!" Yeah right...) And you can always say that you have VTEC yo

***** Now THAT is ununderstandable... I mean, here in Brazil I have MANY reasons to hate Volkswagens: ours are badly made (like Gol, Voyage, Fox and so on) and the trims and equipment level are just not enough (at all) to justify the high prices. Plus, they break all the time. Now that we have the German Golf (TSi and GTi), things might me changing. But as for Hondas... Well... Why do you hate them? o.0

That is why they updated it. The later S2000s were 2.2 liter which increased the torque in lower revs. But it "only" revved to 8000 rpm This 2.0 model is much racier but requires more revs to get going.
@moustachio334

8200rpm red line. Tuneable to 8600rpm where the piston speeds are about equal to the 2.0. They make a 2.5 liter kit with a superior stroke to rod ratio and let's you safely rev to 9K. I've only seen one car with this engine and I don't know all the details. I would love to see more interest in F engines again. K-Tech made a great stroker kit that improved the strike to rod ratio over the F22. That engine was coded F215 if I remember. It had 2156cc's and a 9k rpm redline but with a wider power band over the F20. K-tech made it a square engine if memory serves me right so it had 88mm bore and stroke. Hondas approach was just a quick cheap fix for the American journalists whining about revving a small engine out,but I know Spoon helped in the development of the F22 and that's how I know 8600rpm has similar piston speed as the the F20 at 8800rpm.

For those of you that want a wider powerband without the parasitic drag of variable valve timing, you can find the Toda cams that have 250 degree duration PRE vtec and about 11mm of lift vs the stock 225 degrees and 8mm PRE vtec lift. Expect massive horsepower gains above 4K rpm without losing the stock drivability. I know of fools that went out and bought Todas base cam upgrade which is a lighter and stronger cam but almost with identical specs. The step above those are vastly superior.

Razeiken it lacks the torque to really get it off the line and it is 2wd, remember its a peak engine.. peak torque comes in at 7500 revs and peak power is at 8300 rpm the whole reason it gets 6 seconds ish is because of the launch, don't worry about 0 - 60 so much anyway it only tells you how much traction it gets off the mark... and the only way to keep the revs high is make the wheels spin. it is legit fast though especially when rolling fun too great in turns... engine mounted behind the front axle, rwd, 50:50 weight distribution which is perfect, low and great sports suspension
