the plastic needs to be angled in the opposite directions, so popping embers can't lay on the plastic

@@SurvivalSchoolHouseQUALITY clear packing tape is a huge help. When it's time to alter things or pack up, in some cases, a small plastic bottle of adhesive-release-agent is the only way to get tape off of plastic. I use clear PEVA shower-curtain. It doesnt crack in the cold and it lets in more of the radiant heat than does VisiKleen construction plastic or painter's drop cloth. I dont use the supershelter as such. I use one of 2GoSystems XL size reflective tyvek bivy. I envelope it in a couple of taped-together, heavy-duty 55 gallon drum liners. I fold over the bottom corners of both the bivy and the envelope and tape them in place. When it's cold, I pull a net hammock and a ridgeline thru the bivy (full double zippers, lots of tie off loops) and also a ridgeline thru the envelope. It's important to keep the two membranes held-apart, so as to maintain that layer of trapped air. Gotta use a light and look for pinholes, cause they really hurt your insulative value. I use both a buttpack and daypack. I empty out the packs, stuff them with debris and use them as sleeping pads, normally, up in the hammock. when it's cold, I set the hammock at 6" off of the ground (with me in it) and kick debris under the envelope, so as to stop air from flowing under me. That's worth at least 5% degrees, so dont overlook it! I'll put hot water bottles or hot rocks in the footbox of the bivy and "aim" the one way projected heat of a Siberian fire lay at the 3x4 ft oval of the PEVA, taped over the open end of the bivy. I tape the top half of it, from the inside of the bivy and then my head/weight pushes the PEVA tight against the end of the bivy and the hammock. I keep the Siberian 3 ft away, from the hammock/bivy. . With just cammies, gloves, 3 pairs of sock liners, balaclava and shemagh, unlaced boots, I can sleep ok this way at 20F, for 2-3 hours. Then I have to swap out the cold rocks for hot ones and move the logs further into the flames. i can wear this bvy and envelope as clothing and also, put dry debris between the bivy and the envelope to gain about 10F degrees of insulation. It takes a LOT of debris, tho. I'ts not portable. I have a discrete way to dry out enough debris to help me, by putting it between a pair of Amazons' full-body bugnet "suits", worn as lonjohns I also put debris between the wraps of the amazon camo nets as they wrap around my limbs, (outside of the cammies. This drying method takes all night and you can't get any sleep as you do it If it's cold enough to not worry about hostiles, you can dry out debris pretty quickly, using 4 Siberian fire lays. and some rocks. Use 2 of the siberians to heat both sides of a low "wall" of stones, from both sides. Have two more Siberians opposing each other, over a "bed' of hot stones. Put the wet debris on the stone-bed and stire the debris now and then with a bushy-ended sapling.

Any worries about sparks/embers burning holes…..or worse in the plastic?
@SonnyCrocket-p6h
@SonnyCrocket-p6h 8 ай бұрын
yes, it's much safer to use the Siberian fire lay. also, be sure to angle the plastic IN towards your floor, and roll it up with the log inside of the shelter, so there's nothing for popping embers to land upon. Heat up water or rocks and put them inside of the shelter with you. Have a little bit of air-exchange in the back side of the shelter. Mors set this up to use a parachute for the main body of the shelter, with temps being too cold for rain to be an issue. When you use plastic over everything, there's much more of an issue with condensation. than when the shelter is mostly made of parachute silk.

It burns small holes in the plastic when the wind shifts but negligible loss of heat from them. User-ci2’s… comment has good tips as well to angle the plastic which will help.

@@SurvivalSchoolHouse clear packing tape patches the holes. The Siberian, cause it projects its heat twice as far as a normal fire and because the burning ends of the los are up in the air, doesn't have much in the way of popping embers anyway. Because you' get to stay twice as far away as with a normal fire, the risk is acceptable. I use this fire lay, , but aim it towards the PEVA covered open end of my reflective tyvek bivy, with hot rocks in the foot box of the bivy., and with me up in a hammock a few inches off of the ground. I have very little risk of ember-holes.
