So in case you're wondering, this is Karl Bohm performing Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, and it's a particularly difficult part right at the end of the first movement. The audience has just listened to around 13 minutes of thunderous orchestral music, and now there's nothing but a slight hint of strings in the background. The horns are supposed to come in and play three notes: C#, then B and A right after, then the string section will do the same, but the horn player splits the C# and plays I believe E and C# together. Splitting a note is kind of like your voice cracking. It's a slip up that happens if you don't put enough air or too much air to get the specific sound. It's just that this happened to occur at a really poor time because there were basically no other instruments playing when the horn player came in so it was super obvious to him and the rest of the orchestra and that's why he was annoyed. Bohm was one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, but he was well in his 80's by this point and definitely not performing near his peak. The old conductors were super perfectionists about their craft. Acting like this does nothing helpful and actually draws attention to the mistake when virtually everyone in the audience that isn't intimately familiar with the piece wouldn't have thought a thing of it.

Honestly that conductor clip where he shakes around confuses me. I’m sure the orchestra was used to it, but how did they all know when to come in? Also I like how you put concert hall reverb on all your movements so they sounded all the more like awkward sounds in a silent concert, haha. Also I wonder what country that goth girl is from - that clip was really interesting. Usually I hear people use the term “pianist” by putting emphasis on the “a” as in “hat” and that works for me, it’s better than the alternative. I wonder if the organ player in that clip was a younger sibling they wanted to include; at least that’s what I’d like to believe.
