Nice job showing a manifold repair. I’m a Toyota certified expert mechanic, and I’ve never seen a head gasket go bad on the 4.7. They are one of the best engines that Toyota made in my opinion. It sounds like they might not of had the correct antifreeze in there. It also should be changed every 100k, or with the timing belt job. One time I saw the manifold being welded on the truck to fix the same problem. I also put on some aftermarket shorty headers before. They usually need a slight modification to get the exhaust to bolt on. Nice job

I just searched is there anyway to patch the manifold for a GEN one Toyota Sequoia, and your video came up. Your content was exactly perfect for my situation! I hope yours is still truckin’ ride along brother! I paid $3800 for mine and it was garage super clean interior and rides like it’s brand new! I’m dealing with the idler pulley, which may have caused my throttle body to spew some coolant. I figured I’d take care of all the issues at once. I heard the ball joints go bad so I’m gonna go ahead and replace those they don’t seem to be an issue. Thanks again!

Toyota does seem to make solid products Had a 98 Corolla Kept it in the road for 17 years, 300K miles, head to replace the front CV axles six times and the starter twice. Absolutely no problems otherwise until the transmission blew and we just decided to upgrade to a larger vehicle. The one major problem Toyota had imo it's the door handles are just crap. I've not owned one vehicle without at least one that want broken already My last one, 92 Camry had for broken inside and three outside Wife's 04 Camry had as a broken interior handle But opening the door don't count, keeping it in the road is where they earn they're reputation with me and that they do quite well. Just bought an 01 Sequoia and it has the exhaust leak also. It has some cosmetic issues but this seems to be the only mechanical issue this far. Guy gave me the exhaust manifold, I just need it put on because I am not a car guy. I really wonder if the high temp jb weld would hold long enough for me to save up the money to get it done???

Great idea to get machine shop to fix. I found Dorman manifolds 674684(left) and 674683 (right) on rockauto.com for $133 each. My mechanic says he can't buy them that cheap and Dorman reengineers them so they don't fail again. Dealer wants $1100 to replace one. One guy I asked says 7hrs per side. Another says 5. Labor rate at dealer is $134. My guy is $99 at 5 hrs.

I had run into an exhaust leak on one of these engines, but as I recall it had the cast iron manifold. Not sure what year it was. The leak turned out to be poor machining on the flange area where it fits to the exhaust port. It was an obvious factory defect.
@bigc68868 жыл бұрын
I have a 2000 Tundra I have the same symptoms coming from my exhaust manifold on the passenger side. But my tick does not go away after warming up, could that be because the exhaust may have larger cracks/holes in the manifold? I'm hoping it is not a valve issue.
@BrigT2628 жыл бұрын
cordon, you could pull off the valve cover and run the engine to identify it it's coming from the valve train. but I bet it is the ex manifold leaking. put some effort into it. you'll figure it out.
@bigc68868 жыл бұрын
Will do thanks.
@BrigT2628 жыл бұрын
Yes that does sound like a valve train issue. I'd suggest pouring a qut of ATF in your oil and run that for 500 miles and then change your oil. I've done that several times over the yrs and it works!

Do you have a video of how it sounds like?
@bigtater298 жыл бұрын
mamery jazz. it's doable but you have to hit it from about every angle. from underneath from above and through the fender well. my buddy just did his on his 2000 Tundra. but he replaced the manifolds with some aftermarket headers. as opposed to fixing his old manifolds which he actually gave me or buying new ones. The new headers were less than half the price of new yota manifolds. he said they were damn tight to get in. better sound and performance too.
@mameryjazz8 жыл бұрын
BIGTATER thanks for replying. I got busy and took the car to a muffler shop to get a confirmation. They were in the hurry to replace both manifolds gaskets since no cracks were found in the manifold. Charged me $225 just to find out that the noise remains. I am so annoyed by it that I already put it on Craigslist for $6k. Mine has 140k miles. Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

We have a 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser with a 2uz-fe that just tuned 250k last weekend. it's had a leak for quite some time. This video was quite helpful. However i'm a bit paranoid that if I try to take it apart an exhaust stud will brake. So i'm going to hang off till I can't stand it.
@05370596 жыл бұрын
Don’t worry!!! I was the same way with my 2000 landcruiser. Just spray these studs and nuts with PB blaster for a few days and let it sit before you do the manifolds. If the nuts get stuck with rust it simply unthreads the studs out of the head. I think I used 12 new studs and all new nuts when I fixed my cracked manifold with headers :). Cheers!

Sounds like you had a bad water pump and lost enough coolant to the point where the motor overheated and blew the head gasket. New denso radiator is about 150$$. I would recommend getting one and doing the water pump and timing belt on your replacement motor.

Thanks for posting this video. I have a leak in my 2005 Sequoia; however, it never goes away. Took it to a muffler shop; they think it is the manifold. I love do-it-yourself tasks but have to admit that this one is intimidating me because i can not think of a way to remove the complete exhaust. My question is: did you remove the manifold from under the vehicle or do you access its bolts from the top of the engine. Thanks in advance for assisting me so I know if it is doable for me or not.
@BrigT2628 жыл бұрын
mamery jazz mostly the bolts are accessible from the bottom and through the inner fender. It might help to remove the wheel to have better access.

+Brig T Thanks Brig T. I had both manifold removed but i was unfortunate because we found no leak in my case. Replaced the gaskets just to find out that the noise is still there. Have no idea and gave up fixing it. I can only think about the throttle body plate although it may sound unlikely
