The 4th pin was a problem for me too... Overset it 3 out of 4 times. Then, like yours, the first pin was really high. Once I became familiar with the lock, I found that once pin 4 was above the shear line I could rake the rest of the pins with my hook. The subtleties of lock picking are extreme!

I think most folks that try the 140 for the first time end up scratching their heads. I know I sure did. Mine ended up being a lot like yours except I have 2 almost zero lift pins, I picked pin one, then went high on number two and boom, open. It’s simple but at the same time the results seem inconsistent, so it’s a challenge in its own right. My 140 sits on my work bench to remind me not to underestimate things.

Hi , I'm a newbie that's for sure. I don't even have a proper pick I have been using a wiper steel as my tensioner and my pick. I obviously finally picked it using the tension feel and audible method but my locks highest point is pin 4 and was very hard to set, but as soon as that pin was set I found that you can keeping tension on shake close to one ear you will hear a very distinct sliding,rattling noise.

Patience is the key. No pun intended. And a good ear and good response through your pick. Remember keep tension on and give it a shake. Try it , it works.

I found the predecessor to the 140 locked to my Father's towing chain a couple of weeks ago. I might be mistaken but I believe the 40mm brass Magnum from about two decades ago was in essence the same as the modern Model 140. II cleaned it up athesectically and gifted it to him as a practice lock. Well I consider myself an intermediate picker and I've had hell trying to pick it myself. I really set him up for failure. I just put him some Graphite lube inside the keyway and finally I was able to pick it. Good luck to Dad and Cheers from across the pond from the big Bam

I just got my Sparrow Tuxedo, been practicing on my Master Lock 140. I’ve noticed it’s easier to pick if you use a SPP with light tension but I’m more of a noob than you. Opened it 3-4 times out of 20. I also noticed alot of lockpickers tend to pick from rear to front. I choose front to rear so I can see the pins. I’ve learned alot from youtube videos.

You ought to check out the bitting in my M-140....it looks like a sawtooth wave on an oscilloscope! Pin one is a 7, two is a four, three is a seven but four is a four, too! So the very back pin has to go WAY up there and the one just after it is much lower...so it is necessary to have a pick with a wicked hook on the end.....

You mentioned giving an explanation of why the top of the keyway didn't work for you, but bottom did work. If you gave the explanation, it was so subtle I missed it. This one question has me baffled on this lock. Like you I spent a lot of time working on it, only to switch things up (primarily moving from the top to the bottom of the keyway for tension) and now it opens in seconds. I have no idea why the tension placement is important on this lock

I like using a half diamond to spp these 140s. I got a question tho, how would you all go about to remove the core without a lathe or mill. Steady hacksaw action maybe? I wanna see these pins and use them on another tiny core
@LockNoob6 жыл бұрын
If you can locate where all the brass pugs are that hold the pin stacks and core retaining pin in, you can drill them out with care and tip out the pins. You will likely destroy the springs though :-)

I'm not laughing; I still haven't been able to open mine with SPP (Only fluked it once with a snake rake, but once only! Fluke!)
@oriongaby5 жыл бұрын
The only reliable way I've found to open mine is with light tension (only to the point of binding), picking front to back (it seems the 4th pin is the normal pin so it's very easy to get once you sorted out the security pins), and not pushing too much into the false sets (I'm not sure if its because I have an old lock but mine tends to stick in the false sets making it almost impossible to pick the rest of the pins without resetting another pin by accident)
@mattmartell1623 Жыл бұрын
Got one of these as a first pick after my cheap pick set came in. I was so excited, I picked a lock that had a low to mid security rating but also looked like it would serve me well in the house. Other than the fact that one key doesn't work, this is haaaaaard to pick. I picked it 5 times just going at it randomly the first time i sat down with it, but since then I haven't been able to pick it at all seriously or randomly.
@rgmtb3 жыл бұрын
I'm working on this same lock and having a bugger of a time. Question, so without the key, how would you figure out how to pick the lock? You mentioned how after looking at the key you learned a lot about how to pick the lock. Just trying to understand how this all works 👍
@davidmcalevey64653 жыл бұрын
First of all start with counting the pis by sliding your pick in lifting each pin and then slide in to the next to the next to the next. So on and so forth. Then find the best most relaxed position for you, and do the same maneuver with tension on bottom of keyway , start at the top again this time lifting each pin one at a time. The binding pin will be easy to find. Write it down if you can't remember. Then what I do , knowing that pin 4 is my first pin. Release tension and listen you will audibly hear a click. Then start again, working from your first pin. Keep light tension on and be very light with your setting of the pins. Each time you fing the binding pin write down what number it is. Remember as far as tension goes you shouldn't ever need to force it , however I have found I have had to use significant pressure with my pick to get the initial pins locked. Hope this helps
@davidmcalevey64653 жыл бұрын
Yes , it does feel gritty and also, you have to keep changing pressure on the tension between pins.

This lock drove me nuts. I finally got it open tipping the first two but wasn't able to duplicate it again. I'm going to try again now.
@SwervingLemon Жыл бұрын
My 140 has three zero cuts and a three. It's my favorite lock to hand to people who think they can pick locks because the zero cuts are two spools and a regular pin you can't set if the spools get set first, and that will unset when you set the spools. I've only ever been able to open it with two picks simultaneously. Also, does your have springs that feel like they came from a lorry? The tension on pin 1 is super light. The other three are horrible!

@StarAI 2015 I'm a novice picker as well. Up to this point I've been able to pick my AR-15 trigger lock, the factory Glock lock that comes with gen 4s, some random combination MasterLock with a key backup, a few SentrySafes, my first alert safe, my electronic combo gun safe with a tubular lock..basically everything I've come across (that I either own myself or have been given permission to pick, mind ;)) except the locks used on the deadbolts in my parent's house...turned out by chance they got a really nasty lock that took even Bosnian Bill about 15 minutes to pick so I don't feel too bad. This MasterLock 140D I picked up in a haul of locks to practice on is really giving me a hard time. I probably have about 3 hours combined attempt time into it and haven't gotten it once. Tell me, friend, are you tensioning from the top? With the tools I have on hand currently I can't get a good tension from the top and have been tensioning from the bottom and wonder if that is perhaps my issue...I've come across locks that simply do not pick if you tension from the wrong pole - i.e., one of my safes. Really hard from bottom. Tension from top? Popped in >10 seconds. Any other tricks or quirks of the lock you noticed?
@FRA_StarAl20153 жыл бұрын
@@angry_zergling well first of all after a day or two after my comment i managed to find a pattern and open it in a matter of seconds every time. So, first of all i tensioned it on the bottom, it was pretty easy to get the tension right, just not too hard but not too light. Now for the pins i noticed that there was one pin (in my case the third pin from the front) that needed a lot more pressure than the others. Once i got that one up i pushed up the second one and then went for the fourth one. The first pin didnt need to be pushed up. After just playing around with the lock i learned exactly how much pressure every pin needed, especially the third one which was the "key" hehe to opening the lock fast. Also i noticed my self doing one particular thing every time i went for the fourth pin. I noticed that sometimes i let go a tiny bit of tension with the tension wrench as i tried to access it and push it up. Its pretty easy in the end you just have to play around with it and learn how the lock works. Because i noticed that this lock is kinda klicky and unsmooth so you have to find ways to surpass the things that makes it hard to open. One example for that is when i played around with the tension on the tension wrench when i tried to access the fourth pin, i had to do that because the lock and pin mechanisms were so unsmooth. When i wanted to access the fourth pin i shook the picking tool a bit aswell, making it easier to get in there. So just find the one pin that is the hardest to push up and go from there. Ps. I picked the lock so many times i think it broke because i suddenly wasn't able to open it anymore:)
@angry_zergling3 жыл бұрын
@@FRA_StarAl2015 Thank you for your detailed reply! Yeah, I, too, have noticed there is one pin that is backed up by a super spring. Spindle-pins and false sets, yeah - they'll throw me but eventually I'll figure it out. This super-spring was sort of weird as I was wondering if it was some zero-lift trick-pin where if you even consider touching it with your pick it'll lock up your...well, lock. It's like 5x stronger than any other spring within the lock and I was wondering what the trick was. Good to know someone has picked it with tension from the bottom, though - relatively cheap (>$50 for a set) of picks+tension wrenches (at least the ones I've seen) do not ever include anything thin enough/tough enough/narrow enough to interface topside with a lock with an eye toward tolerance and/or effective warding. Gonna have to find the right material to dremel me out a set...but for the time being it's really good to know it's possible to tension from the bottom and pick. I'll give 'er another go! =)

This is kind of an old video now, but I have a 140 with a very high-to-set Pin 1, which needs to be set first by pushing it ALLLL the way up, then - avoiding Pin 2 completely (or it would spring Pin 1 & you'd have to release tension to re-set), and lightly set pin 3, then pin 4 & she comes open. Edit: I do need to use light tension (top of keyhole is best for me), or else pin 3 appears to be a spool pin & false sets & need to restart.

No need to be embarrassed. I just started picking and I had the same problem with my Masterlock 140 The biting is terrible. It has basically a zero lift on the 2nd pin so when I try to set pin 3-4 I overset pin 2. I bought the lock at target and I should have picked a different one with better biting bc you can see the key in the packaging. Oddly enough this lock is harder to pick than masters bigger locks like the #5. Masterlock is flawed. Update: I practiced on picking this longer and now I can easily pick it.

My 140 gave me trouble until I opened it by accident. As in I stuck in the tools, and it just opened. I looked at the key and realized the last pin was one of those deep near zero lift ones, the first was moderately deep, and second moderately shallow, and the third shallower still. Basically if you try to pick the third pin, that motion sets the first two and the lock opens. If you try to do anything else, you overset something. It's like flipping a coin that multiplies on heads and tries to lodge in your nostril on tails.

I still can't seem to consistently pick this. Starting to become frustrated with it. I'm using improvised picks (bobby pin pick, hammered allen wrench tension). I'm starting to wonder if I should put this guy aside until I can get some real picks, or if I should keep going & practicing? I'm getting an OK picture of what's going on inside the lock. There are definitely spools, I get false sets often (sometimes small, sometimes huge) - but can't seem to translate those into a pick by setting the spool (could be because of the weak/bendy bobby pin pick?). Sometimes I'll feel counter-movement, sometimes I wont. I feel like either 3 or 4 are a spool (or both)... But I'm not really qualified experience wise to make that call, or that the very-low-set pin 2 is possibly serrated... Worth the frustration? Get real picks?

I picked my 140 4 times tonight with home made picks. Still not consistent at it though

I just did it after one day of trying! With home made tools too (100% paper clip) and it's my first lock ever. What did you use as tool and how did you make them? Because I plan to try and lock pick other locks but I would like better tools as paper clip are pretty painful

I cannot pick this lock, not by single pin and not by raking!!! (BTW, who makes your pick?)

This one is a pain in the butt and it has stumped me...all the other masters were cake but this one is killing me!

You’ll get it! Keep going!

I dont know why but my Masterlock 140 has been much easier to pick than my No.3. I know No.3 is considered a bit of a joke by the lockpicking community, but that thing drives me crazy.

Thank you. I just want to make honest videos that will help other noobs rather than show off. Good luck with your picking : )

My favorite way to open the 140 is a comb pick

It's my first week picking locks and this is the easiest one I have. I felt like it has 1 spool but I thought "no way they put spools in this cheap locks" so I open it in ~15 seconds every time. It has a really deep false set and I gradually release tention and bump the last pin like 5-7 times with the pick to force it open. Usually it opens but sometimes something else falls down and I have to fix it.

Wow, you found a really old video! I almost forgot I made this one!

Ok I've made a revelation for 140. Soo easy it wants you to think it's hard I've reduced 4/20 to 95%. Lightest pressure possible hold lock to ear and feel.

Apparently a comb is as good as the key

Comb pick works too.

I have been trying this lock for so fucking long, I didn't think hard tension would work as it felt so gritty. Literally, the second I tried it, I opened it 😂

I've found the 140 so hard to pick.

I can rake this open with a bogota entry pick from serepick over and over again. As soon as I slide it in the keyway it pops open

I found this one easy to rake but I can't open a number 3 so I'm ready to accept defeat LOL

I have been watching your channel and a number of others on picking master locks. I thought the Master Lock 140 would be easier then the others I have managed to pick. I was dead wrong. Until, I figured out the binding order of 4,2,1. That doesn't mean I can hit that binding order each time LOL I would move on to the disc detainer locks I have but my cheap Chinese pick broke as soon as I put it in the lock. I will wait till a certain store has the better pick in stock.

Omg you dont understand how this video helped me, my key just looks like a V so it was so hard to pick. But like your lock mines open right up as soon as I started with the first pin.

Hard to do pin by pin! Opens in seconds with a rake, but where's the fun in that.

OMG not long a beginner but this 140 is making me feel I've chosen the wrong hobby 🙁🙁

Hahahaha I've just started and my uneducated ass bought a master Lock to start to learn cause they are easy and I searched for it's make and it's described as a bit of a nightmare to pick.

Son of a b****. I got a set of Master 141s and I've been wondering why it feels "weird" picking them. If these things have spools, its little wonder.
