Loved your basic thesis! And I loved the rabbit hole! Very interesting ❤

I suspect that Jane Austin was added just as a way to place the reader in the era with a familiar name. I have never read a word of her work, but your discussion of her success, or lack of it, during her lifetime is very interesting! Your discussion of women at the time reminds me of one of the books I started reading during my vacation - I was screaming during Thomas Mann's Buddenbrooks that all the German businessmen left their secret penury from their own wives - and this was so common - just incredible. I also record most of my review videos by just winging it off prepared notes and bullet points, which I suspect you did here also, but you are so much better at it - if this this is your idea of just winging it on camera, then I swear that I cannot tell the difference between this and your more scripted videos. Thank you for the interesting book review video.

I did not warm to Jane Austen's work until it was forced upon me but even then I would not join a fan club. Her novels are pinpoint portraits - specific country, specific time, specific socio-economic class and specific gender. Within that narrow bandwidth Jane is very capable and the interesting arguement is what might she have been if not confined to the English drawing room

Hi Phillip excitement for both of us the KZbin algorhythm was adding your videos to my feed so we are double subscribed. You have a beautiful brindle coated greyhound (is that the correct term?)

@@heathereads: Ah, my brindle boy greyhound. Yes, he is (one) love of my life. He's such a gentle, quiet & affectionate boy I love him to bits. I am very lucky to have found him.

@@heathereads: You did the 'Mark Your Place' tag with Meg, didn't you? I had a blast taking part in that. I think I referenced the wrong 'Heather Reads' in my video. Sorry about that, if that's what happened. It was such a fun & unexpected tag to take part in. I loved it.

@apoetreadstowrite That does happen. I have considered renaming my channel because funky names seem to help attract viewers. Don't have any ideas yet

Interesting that a historical love affair made it to a Booker longlist! 2000, different days, I suppose... 😉

LOL love affair is what William Hazlitt thought of it. Sarah Walker saw it differently. Re the Booker Longlist, I was surprised also. The book is acceptable but not prize material
