Blizzard conditions impacted the state of Iowa on Thursday morning. Visibility was near zero at times and multiple vehicles got stuck in the snow. Video package includes stranded motorists and blowing snow reducing visibility across southeast Iowa.

@@kimschubert61 Yes!! To the Bulk Mail Center in Dubuque, IA. I had to back a 53' semi trailer up in an alley dock while dodging IA travelers while backing across US 20, during a snowstorm. The mail has to go no matter what the weather is Kim. You as a mail carrier in IA, probably did most of your deliveries from a Jeep that was provided for you. Image the days of the Pony Express. Now those were Postal Workers. Glad to see you made it to retirement with out getting ran over.

I'm from Milwaukee, WI. The shits over here. Now all we got is the wind blowing the 2.5 inches that fell earlier all over the fucking place & because the Polar Vortex is setting in, the temperature is dropping down below zero. Don't even think about using salt for the ice, it will not work until everything thaws out in about a week or so. Throw another log on the fire get you a brew, kick back & enjoy.

@P J You could see bare road most of the time, or just a few inches. All you need to do is drive slow, keep windows clear, and keep space. (morons tailgaiting cause most winter accidents, it's not going that's too hard, it's stopping!) Going up hill esp. in deeper snow is another story, but it's pretty flat in Iowa and their snowfalls aren't even what we get on east coast. I had to detour during our recent 28" snow and had to drive up hill up a country road that wasn't recently plowed, maybe 8-10" on the road. I only got stuck because I forgot to turn off my traction control lol. Turned it off, backed up, resumed my travel without difficulty.....on worn all season tires with no chains or studs lol. (I don't worry about snow tires and chains in Pennsylvania because I know we aren't the Sierra, Rockies, or even the colder places in New England, if I were there I'd have snow tires....we have a few days a year with snow covered roads and it's been so mild the last few years I forgot about the stupid traction control which always defaults to on)

People have been trialing the Tesla FSD beta in these conditions, and it works better than people do, as it can see more. It doesn’t need lane lines. Still being improved. (This is the new FSD, not the current auto assist) Maybe Tesla will need to offer the option of undercar sonar which penetrates the snow to find the road?

I am from Hibbing, Minnesota, and never understood why in the world in the middle of a huge blizzard (unless it was an emergency) people went out on those roads to get to the mall, to friends and so on, knowing they had a 60% chance of getting stuck in a ditch in the middle of nowhere, 6 years ago I packed up and moved to Florida to never return, now days I'm happy I only see snow on KZbin, TV and Christmas cards, that's it!

Just speaking as someone who lives in iowa and just went through this... work doesn't stop for bad weather. I work in a factory, didn't get off till 6 hours after it started and was expected back at 6 am the next day. Lots of these truckers have deadlines to keep factories running, and factories only care about your safety when you're clocked in. I know it seems insane seeing all these people out in this, but life doesn't stop moving because of bad weather.

Appreciate your position though. A rock and a hard place. The fact that your 'factory' is willing to have you die for their widgets kinda' says something though, doesn't it? As I said, truckers face that decision out there frequently. There were many times I went 'the next day', passing dead 18-wheelers by the roadside in Wisconsin, Nebraska, Wyoming, Texas, etc - the ones who just went with 'the company line' - because they weren't fortunate enough to be trained by a seasoned semi-trucker like I was. Again, sorry you have to be placed in that position ... where you are literally terrified of making it in to work, or back home again. What a fine bunch these 'American' companies are!

A lot of folks get sent home when the weather gets bad. It started as a light rain and then changed fast when the wind kicked in. All you can do is go slower and pray that everyone gets home. It did not last very long but that wind is always a killer here. It's so open that it has nothing to slow it down. So glad its over and everyone is okay.

If you don't have to go to work or pick up the kids, stay home. Drive slow, clear ALL the car windows, keep blanket, flashlight, food, water, extra socks, rope warning triangles, shovel in car- preferably back seat so easy to reach. Make sure to keep snow from clogging your exhaust pipe!!! Put your emergency flashers on, wipe snow off your headlights, brake lights!!!!! Tie rope to steering wheel in car and yourself if you have to leave your car ( whiteout conditions and you'll end up a frozen statue). Stay safe!! STAY ALERT and STAY ALIVE;)

Modern vehicles are really great thing is the semi trucks they don't have a Johnny bar anymore where you can take them hit that a little bit and take him straighten out from getting into a jackknife or whatever which a lot of them did on 88 and they did on 61 and they did on many other roads and I guess i-82 I got passed by a cab over today but the thing is the cabover at least they had a Johnny bar at least and the new cars they're getting shorter and shorter wheel bases and they're deadly as hell
