This is one of the main reasons I LOVE the pico. Their method of recording over a long time base and being able to zoom in afterwards is much better than snapons backward thinking. No need to judge what time base is best before taking a capture.

Love it. When i am doing this i like to throw in a 3rd channel on the start signal. Then i know exact time from crank to ignition event and see the amplitude from the ckp at that point. A note on this test is that this problem is more inherent with vrs sensors. If the ckp is a hall sensor i go straight to fuel pressure for bleed back. Great video as usual

From the 'ridiculously low' 0.1 V p-p to 2 V p-p from the crank sensor was a great diagnosis... I had a similar experience with an infra-red sensor on a 5.1 sound system amplifier where the remote control would not work; the remote control was transmitting, but the sensor (with a 12 Volt DC reverse bias) was also a 'ridiculously low' 0.1 V p-p. Could not find a replacement, but aware that it was an infra-red receiver, used one from a 'trashed' video, giving a 5V p-p on the (cathode ray) oscilloscope... Fixed...

Not sure why you hate that much the European cars and Europe as all, but saying on some videos "Russian Repair" And still good job, pleasure watching you. Not anyone can afford bmw after all. Most people that give bad grades for cars, drive second hand cars all their lives! I have model e46 new from the very beginning, never ever happened to it except for mass airflow sensor, one oxigen sensor and some trifles on the running gear. This is awesome brand! Thank you.

I believe the delta is time not voltage. You should have mentioned that you already checked for fuel pressure, long crank is most of the time low fuel pressure and the whole time I was wondering why your jumping on a crank sensor then I seen the FP gauge nice video

@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 9 жыл бұрын
+JOHN HUFNAGEL See @2:00 we had a CKP code stored, so that was my first direction. Didn't need to check for fuel pressure...they rigged that gauge up before I got there. No easy schrader valve either, so that would be a last-resort test in terms of speed. Thanks for the comments, John!

Is there any other source for the information that you normally get with the snap on Vantage, verus or any other snap on tools that are/have an oscilloscope? The information I'm referring to is where they state which pin to backprobe, show a sample waveform, etc. 6:38 is an example in your video.

motoYam82 I had an E36 325i and I learned a ton on that car. It would tell you which headlight, taillight or blinker light was out and it also showed faults for the trunk wiring on the OBC. I had to spliced most of the wires back together in the trunk loom where they flex from opening and closing the lid. Then there was other run of the mill stuff with vanos seals, cooling system etc.. The E46 I have now is an improvement on the E36, but there is more plastic. And I also had a bad crank sensor on the E36 and a bad coil on the E46 so far, but nothing major.

Hi Ivan, my Passat CC 2012 is having an issue of crank, no start sometimes, when it is able to start up, it comes out intermittent error lights and warnings, sent to my local VW workshop, it diagnosed that car has no communication with the instrument cluster and that has to be changed out. They quote me a whopping 5 grand for that job. Was wondering if I am able to find the cluster myself and get someone else to program it? A concern is that none of my local workshops know how to program that. Any advice you can give me please?

Do you work in the parking lot due to insurance reasons? Basically not being allowed in the shop cause your not a employee? Been curious for a while. I am a 15yr veteran master tech in the import world. Want to say the I have actually learned a couple of methods that are easier than how I was doing it and I do appreciate the videos. Had my not tech friend watch it and he mentioned that he would like to see you explain your measurements in a little more detail. That way I dont get 10 phone calls every time we watches a videos...lol keep up the great work. You are in the 1% Like me that just love diagnosing

You know, for about $2 they could add four analog sampling ports from 64 inputs, brought out to 4 scope channels. For another $3, they could add a scope built into the media display. How cool would that be? Even better, they could have the engine computer monitor those channels and at least partially narrow the probem down to a few invalid looking signals. Why doesn't every car have this already?

This is true what why would a manufacturer care about making it easy for a DIYer to fix their car. Some old Cadilacs had a way of button pressing on the HVAC panel that allowed you to get codes, data, and even bi-directional control. It was only for a few years then management probably thought it was more bother than it's worth having end users being able to try to diagnose their own car and cut the dealer out.

Seems the VERUS is the more versatile reader, that works on more vehicles and has deeper depth of readings and information. Why bother with the LAUNCH system?
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 7 жыл бұрын
The Verus is a more well-rounded tool, since it has a scope and info database built in. The Launch generally has more coverage of specific OEM functions, especially on newer and Euro vehicles. There is no perfect scanner.

motoYam82 They did make "X5M" models, but starting with the next generation E70 body. These E53s were limited to 4.6is and 4.8is as the sporty variants, with more issues than you could shake a stick at, beginning with failure prone air suspensions and ending god knows where! This one is obviously an imposter.

hi im gonna say something please dont take it the wrong way i like how your doing work on these machines but i see this everyday and every tech does this mistake you just did theres absolutly nothing wrong withe the crank sensor a sensor goes bad if the diode it broken or overheated it works or it doesent you have a gunk problem an engin flush will fix this problem and other problems it starts dificult in the morning cause the gunk has solidified in the morning and as it heats up it flows on unblockes the sulface area of the sensor as it cools down it builds up and solidifies the gunk in front of the sensor you dig you understand

Maybe its not right dont you think, everywhere a system more complex becomes more problems gonna come out, the europeans use lets say a 4 liter naturally aspirated engine (ferrari 458 italia) and produce 605 hp, in the united stater you have to use a 7 liter engine to obtain that power, because you dont tend to use such a complexed systems, maybe this is the reason you call'em garbage 😀😀

No, its because it is actually garbage. I can build a better looking harness than that. Come on BMW, at least use different color wires so when one of these "amazing" systems fail they will be easier to diagnose. Can't be "the ultimate driving machine" if you cant even get it out of the parking lot. Also it takes us 7 liters to get that kind of horse power but with 5x the torque ;)
