This movie depicts how cruel humanity can be. In other movies, people are either given a justified reason or are portrayed as being absolutely insane. This movie took normal, everyday people and showed how cruel they can be. Such a beautiful and tragic piece of art that they have made here.

+Francisca Rodrigues for me, it hit home in a far more personal way. At the time the movie premiered, I was being bullied at school and it was pretty vicious. You hear the message all the time; you're not the first person who has been bullied but the truth is that you do feel isolated. All the sudden, this movie came out and I was thinking "Finally, somebody gets it" and I also loved the hopeful message; that while the world can be a dark and scary place but it's full of good people and it gave me hope that I would one day escape. And I have. You're right, I think kids should see this movie.

Like you, janeyrevanescence 12, this scene also hit home in a far more personal way. I also got bullied as a kid when this movie was first premiered and felt very similarly. I didn't buy the movie once it came out on VHS at the time because I was going through some traumatic situations at the time and didn't want to be reminded of them. However, I always loved the hopeful message of there being good people in this dark and scary world we live in and helped to assure me that I too would escape. I'm studying to be a teacher as well as looking forward to becoming a mother one day in the future and will definitely show this to my kids.

It's sad how Esmeralda (to me) has the purest heart out of all the Disney females yet she isn't even acknowledged as a princess or hero. I can understand what Alan Menken meant when he said that Hunchback of Notre Dame was one of his most serious works of the Music, but he did a damn good job on this Movie as with many others. I remember when i was Little & everytime this scene came up, it frightened me baddly, now that i'm 22, it just makes me mad & upset. It also makes me wish Disney could make scenes like this, without sugarcoating it. I also wish they could make more characters like Esmeralda, she may not be of Royal blood but she has heart, attitude & sense of justice for every outsider like Quasimodo.

I teach kids aged 9-11years and they are more aware of injustices in the world than I did at their age. What I like particularly about this scene was how powerful a moment of kindness can be to a victim of cruelty. There are many scenes in this movie that are 'upsetting' but think what it would mean to someone who had been bullied themselves and can take some comfort.

kellywongwst I was 11 when I saw this in theaters for the first time, and I can easily see why that scene would be disturbing to a 6 year old. But this movie still has a G-rating officially. Some say it should be PG. I don't think it should be PG-13 though, but everyone has their own views on the subject. On another note, in theaters, I remember that when Esmeralda approached a degraded Quasimodo, I heard heart beats, most likely his. They began to quicken, but not out of first attraction. I think they were heart beats of fear and wariness, given what he'd just been through.

+Ash the CEO Both of you have a point. For me the problem is not that things like The Boxtrolls or The Dark Crystal exist, but the fact that parents need to know their children very well in order to know if they can take that much, or what exactly can they take and what not. For example, some kids grow up with Robocop, and me, at my 20s was terryfied by some moments of it, and i saw movies like Cannibal Holocaus, Irreversible and A Serbian Film before it, so in theory, the same kids could grow up with those movies as well, and we know that's not true.

+kellywongwst as I mentioned earlier, I first saw this movie when I was about eight, at a time when I was being very badly bullied at school. Unlike you, I couldn't turn off the television or look away. I had to go through it with nobody helping me. And the worst part about it was that I felt that I was totally alone. You hear the message all the time; you're not the first person who has been bullied. The truth though is that you do feel alone. All the sudden, this movie came out and I was relieved. Here was a film saying "Yes, the world is full of cruel people, but it's also full of good people and that someday things will be better." That's what kept me going and I have escaped. I'm working at my dream company and I'm free now. That's why I think we should show this movie to children and talk with them about not only why it's wrong to bully others but why we should stand up for people being hurt.

DAMN I saw this movie in theaters over twenty years ago as a little boy and never really saw it a again. Now I just saw this scene as a grown man a few minutes ago and just stopped crying. This is by far the most tear jerking scene I can remember for a Disney film or film in general. The sad thing about this is how real this scene is and how people react when one person is singled out for the target of mass cruelty.

At the Festival of Fools, Quasimodo is celebrated for his awkward appearance, but is humiliated by the crowd after Anastasia and Drizella start a riot. Lady Tremaine refuses to help Quasimodo, until a kindhearted gypsy named Esmeralda decides to set things right and comes to Quasimodo’s rescue. Lady Tremaine orders her execution, but Esmeralda escapes by using a magic trick to evade arrest. Lady Tremaine gives Quasimodo a stern glance and sends him back to the bell tower.

(She sticks out her tongue with a child's sock on the end and throws the sock right on a CDA agent.) CDA Agents: 2319! We have a toxic projectile! Frollo: (in the Queen of Hearts' voice) OFF WITH HER HEAD!!!
