The people who were mad that Quasi and Esmeralda didn’t end up together completely missed the point. The “twist” of the story is that at the start, the jester calls the movie a story of “a Man and a Monster,” with the start of the movie leading you to think that Frollo is the man and Quasi is the monster, because of how he looks. But leaves hints throughout the entire story of Frollo being the monster and Quasi being the man. When Frollo lusts after Esmeralda and she clearly doesn’t want him, he gives her one choice; either love him back or burn and die, which isn’t a choice anyways because she’ll lose her life with both options she’s been given. However, when Quasi falls in love with Esmeralda but learns that she’s in love with Phoebus (sorry if I spelled that wrong) he still cares for her safety and happiness. He’s sad of course, but he doesn’t resent her for not loving him back, he respects her choice, saves her and cherishes their friendship. This is another example of what makes a man and what makes a monster.

Also people forget that Esmeralda's character subverts the Madonna-Whore complex, where Quasi saw her as the Madonna and Frollo saw her as the Whore. Quasi placed her on a pedestal and saw her as a peerless perfect angel while Frollo saw her as a lowly, seductive, snaky temptress from Hell(due to his own view of Romani women no doubt), while Phoebus merely saw her as Esmeralda. Just a normal woman. So of course she chose him. I'm also just so sick of the ugly guy gets rewarded with hot girl trope, and I know many people who agree. 🙄

the first comment kind of says what I was gonna say. I wasn't a big fan of this movie when I was little. When I first saw this I was a child and I was too young to appreciate it. As a kid I knew Q was a good guy but I couldn't get past his physical appearance bc I had never seen someone look like that and it freaked me out a bit. Not to mention the movie is incredibly dark and extremely horny 😂 (I always liked Esmerelda tho lol) But now as an adult I just rewatched this recently and I'm obsessed. It's an absolutely amazing film in every way (except the gargoyles being real and not in his head... Don't even get me started) and Q, Esmerelda, and Phoebus- they're all such good characters. I think only adults or teens can really appreatiate this movie, it's definitely not for kids. There's a whole song about Frollo being way too horny for Esmerelda and then he tries to burn her at the stake for not being with him... We gotta appretiate this movie, man, disney will NEVER be this dark and horny again 😂😭😭😭😭

Yes! And I saw a video just the other day saying most often celebs are cast in voice acting roles for the movie's publicity and that they do worse jobs than real voice actors and don't fit their roles; one of them they called out was Demi Moore in this movie, even though it was just for a second. I'm like...some are clearly not great, but SHE fit the character in both acting and natural vocal tone! Judge based on each performance, not ONLY on the fact that they're celebs!

5:17 is her *best* moment. In so many other movies to artificially squeeze extra conflict out of the situation a badly written character would turn to Quasi hurt and be all, "What's he talking about?" but Esmeralda isn't just any character. She knows there's no way in hell Frollo wouldn't be dishonest and Quasi wouldn't be loyal and his cinnamon roll self. The movie's filled to the brim with unusually complex characters, be they unbelievably likable or wicked. The only reason I can't say she's my favorite heroine is because it'll always be Belle for me, but she's the only other one that comes close.

The great thing about Esmeralda beating the shit out of the guards is that she's treating it like one of her shows. She's not taking these bozo's seriously at all. It's just a game to her and it's even more fun because she's entertaining the crowd while she's doing it. Furthermore, she's not stupid enough to get into a direct confrontation with them. She's using her speed, quick thinking and surroundings instead of trying to fight them directly because she knows she wouldn't stand a chance in a test of brute strength. When she's up against Phoebus, it's pretty clear that he doesn't want to hurt her. He's a trained soldier, so Esmeralda had no chance of beating him in a head to head fight.

ngl Hunchback of Notradam was literally one of the best Disney Movie that they have ever brought out. It handled important messages and grotesque but real themes with respect, without forcing a 'childish' 'relatable' 'trendy' filter on top of it to make it 'Mass friendly' - Disney once knew better and they have lost every single spark that they had in their renessaince. I watched it as a child and yes, the scene with Quasimodo humbled me because i had been victim to bullying and it just felt so heartbreaking to see such a nice person being treated like this, but all in all i have turned out alright and wasn't 'traumatized' like a lot of companies think, children become when they get exposed to important straight up themes like Bullying, injustment, Religion, etc. Also, Esmeralda was literally the perfect Feminist representation - no cringy forced overly strong heroine that is incredibly unrealistic with being strong and 'loveless' for her whole personality, no colored hair, no trendy language or whatsoever. She was beautiful, strong but also empathic and sometimes even scared, she was literally a perfect written character.
@mrswhatdoyoucare2947
@mrswhatdoyoucare2947 Жыл бұрын
Also Frollo was a perfect villain - he wasn't traumatized, he did not have a relatable backstory or motivation, he had no 'change of heart', he was no watered down villain, HE was literally EVIL throughout and back then, Disney did a great job in portraying this character in his whole 'glory' - he was an asshole, why? - because he is literally a evil person, that's it. Not every villain needs to have some form of Trauma that turned them evil or whatever, sometimes people are just greedy bastards and that's the sad truth.

@@annacarozza9812 I think they meant that as in Esmeralda being a Roma woman, and while she is a strong, beautiful, character who’s actually one of the rare instances of the Roma people being represented as good and not just thieves, her outfit is pretty stereotypical. (Even the original book this movie was heavily inspired of off was extremely racist towards the Roma people, so Disney making her dark-skinned instead of the pale one from the OG story was actually good on their part, but still, outfit is pretty stereotypical.) So when people try and dress like her, it just comes off as offensive to ACTUAL Roma traditional clothing. (At least that’s from what I know!)

@anonymous viewer Thank you for saying this!!! I feel that SO many authors/writers feel that if they have two characters of the opposite gender who care about one another, they MUST eventually (if not immediately) both harbor romantic feelings for one another. And even if their dynamic is more that that of siblings and one character doesn’t return those feelings, it just means that the other person just needs to work harder until the day the target of their affection magically change their mind, right? 🙄 But that ignores so much of the complexity of humans. There are so many other kinds of relationships that exist, but for some reason, fiction writers seems to think that only romantic relationships are meaningful. So instead of developing deep and dynamic relationships like that between siblings, mentors/mentees, parents/children, etc, they often awkwardly force the two characters together. Sometimes, this can even become disturbing, especially when their previous dynamic sometimes resembled that of an older sibling/guardian/parent taking care of the younger one. It just feels that it twists how I view their previous relationship from something heartwarming to something unnaturally forced, and even potentially concerning. Plus, it reinforces the idea that people (especially girls) are obligated to return romantic feelings if they are pursued by someone else, regardless of their personal feelings. Sorry, I really had to rant about this, haha. But that’s why I find works like this so refreshing. The two lead characters never became a couple, but their deep bond and care for one another remains so clear and meaningful.

People often miss the point by being mad Quasi and Esmarelada didn’t get together. It would kinda dilute the point if she did all that for romance, that would make it seem like the power of love instead of solidarity. It would risk portraying her as predatory and Quasi has very little life experience and her considering him a boy. Her existing romance gets boiled down to getting with a handsome jock missing the star crossed lovers part and him having to make sacrifices to be with her. Also people often don’t know the public execution was successful in the book and Quasi died because he refused to leave her grave side and that’s way more traumatising

@@jessefulton8841 Honestly i think the original comment was just joking, but i got exactly what you mean. There is NO problem about a woman being "fine" and loving her own body. Esmeralda is beautiful, sensual and fine, but she has MUCH MORE than this. You don't see people saying "omg i love Esmeralda because she has a fine body", no, you see people admiring her kindness, her strength, her talents and her compassion. Being beautiful and sensual are just one of her qualities. She is not an object, she is a strong, kind woman that feels free about her own body. If you get so upset with a sensual woman despiting all of her qualities, then the problem is on YOU and not her. I never saw anyone commenting about "how much Ariel is fine and unnapropriate for children" for example, but when a woman is dark-skinned, then she can't be fine? @@justinwilliams7290 While I agree with your assessment of princesses' lives, I don't think it's practical or even correct to say all romanticizing should stop. Princesses are one of the oldest archetypes in stories. Maiden, mother, and crone, king, warrior, magician, and lover, were never intended to be realistic depictions of their respective duties. They are ideas. Princesses represent purity, kindness, and courage. It is through the personification of these ideas that we see the result of their influence on the world. The problem is people romanticizing real people, of any role. Would I ever want to be a real princess? No. But I also know that archetypal princesses and real princesses are not to be conflated. I only aspire to have the same strength of heart and mind as the archetype.

That scene where she is with Prince Charming and takes Quasi by the hand out of the shadow? That’s bullshit. If she were a real queen, she would have walked on that bloody stage with Quasi at her side, and proclaimed so- ‘I am your queen, and Quasi is my king. @@claudiamanta1943 He did not worship her? Quasimodo outright calls her an angel. And she does. Just not in the same way he thinks of her. Quasi wants so very badly to be loved, yet he only learns how to love in return when he respects her choice. Just because you make sacrifices for someone (all of which Esmerelda does for him with NO expectations), that doesn't mean they owe you their love. And though she doesn’t fit into the traditional groups of POCs, at least in the US, which includes black, brown, Hispanic and native people-in Europe I feel like she is. She is physically a person of color, probably doesn’t identify as white, and her people at treated as a minority, with all the prejudice and hate that always seems to come with it unfortunately.

@@cosmozapallo4530 that was so wrong on so many levels....also you used a slur and romani people have little to no connection with the middle east...so no she can't have "middle eastern blood". Romani people descend from Indians fyi. And lastly (even tho many of the stuff you said were wrong) she's still not white. European? Year white? Nope. She can't "identify as white" that shit doesn't exist since it's either a real classification or nothing, you can't "identify" as a race or an ethnic group if you aren't part of it. And that's it at the end of the day she is romani and not white. Ik it's hard for you Americans to wrap your heads around the way other people see ethnicities and race (your classification is bs basically)

Well no one else except Esmerelda really knew what Quasimodo's worst struggles were while facing the crowds on the street, she could tell lots of it was causes by Frollo's abuse done to him, not Quasimodo's own thinking. It's thanks to her Quasimodo was able to learn what he did at the end.

@@anthonyguarino4242 That's a great bit of writing. You can't say "bitch" in a Disney movie so most writers simply wouldn't write a character who uses that language. These writers made it clear that Esmeralda DOES use that language but she holds back whilst in a house of God. It's also implied that she doesn't necessarily believe in God but she still respects the Church.

The reason why she’s a lot more likable than modern female heroes is because she’s a genuinely nice person and she doesn’t go out of her way to *say* anything about “oOH MesTRONgeR thAn mAn” rather she uses smart tricks to let the enemy tire themselves out

A character detail that I feel is underated: she could've simply run off undetected after the smoke trick that Frollo called "witchcraft", but she stayed and let the guards know she was still there just so she could humiliate them and Frollo in front of the crowd.

Esmeralda was having the time of her life in that scene. She stuck around to entertain the crowd, humiliate Frollo, and have fun. This Esmeralda is an adult but in the original story, she was 16 and that does seem like the sort of thing a rebellious teenager would do.
