Thank for posting this excellent introduction to paper marbling. It is nice to have a cheaper alternative to see how it works before we start to spend more money on the professional supplies. The torch trick for clearing bubbles was a real gem.....thanks

I didn`t use the Alum, if you want to do a piece that you want to keep or sell you first prepare your paper with Alum. You can put it on with a sponge, or a bottle with a mister. You do have to wait until the paper is dry and iron it flat to use it. too many bubbles in the paper can cause the air to get caught under the paper when you put it on the surface. The spreading is different because every paint has a different density, pigments are bonded together with a bonding agent and different colors need more or less bonding, different colors have more or less pigment particles. You can do a test run before you make the definite piece and remember that the more paint is in the tray the less the paints spread.

Hello again, Something else I discovered, the prepared paper with the alum needs to be used within a certain amount of time before the alum is no longer effective from what I was told from the company I ordered the paper from. The sheets are approx. 12x14 and were 25 cents per sheet. Thank you for telling me to iron them before I use them, that was not included in the instructions from the book I ordered.

Just an FYI: *Carrageenan* and *Alum* can both be bought, in bulk, very cheaply on eBay... that it's not packaged and sold for paper marbling specifically doesn't matter. They both have hundreds of uses and there's no difference in *carrageenan* used in food (it's a thing) or for molds or for art (or the *alum* used in wool dyeing or crystal growing or here). It goes without an obligatory reminder to try and find a reputable seller of course...

Thanks for sharing this. I have a couple of questions- you said you don't have paper prepared, what does that mean? Do you paint the alum on the paper? My second question is some colours seem to spread more than others even in second or third layer, does that depend on how thin the paint is, or the quality / density of the colour?

Annemarie, so it is ok to mix brands with the paper marbling technique but not with the acrylic pour? I finally amassed all of my supplies (not cheap) but if I hadn't watched your video I wouldn't have realized that I forgot the ox gall. You're a wonderful teacher, very easy to understand and saved me from wasting expensive supplies. Thank you

Even if it looks dirty it still works but before you do a next one you clean the surface with scrap paper. All art forms need time and experimenting...all brands of paint behave differently. ♥♥♥ Thank you and thank you for watching♥♥♥

depends on how big your tray is...couple of table spoons is what I used. I prepare it with warm water that speeds it up but you have to let it cool down before starting to marble. If its too thick you can Always add cold water to get the thickness you need.

hEY, hI i DID EVERYTHING AS YOU SAID in the instructions with the ox gall n the paints and the alum for the paper but unfortunately nothing happen. The acrylic paintings didnt spread out as they should have done , neither the paper I took did get the image from what i did in the tray. I am kind of dissapointed where did I get wrong. Maybe you can precise how much exactly ox gall drops you put inside in the paintings....Or maybe for the carragenan how much tablespoons in 2 litres, cause I did as you have said. Maybe the paper was wrong, what kind of paper is good ? :) I will need to go to classes for ebru, but still it is maybe that i did smth wrong with the proportions I guess I don't know... :(:(:(
@annemarieridderhof
@annemarieridderhof 6 жыл бұрын
you don`t just throw it together and expect to get it right...it`s not that easy. you make the thick water first...put some in a glass and mix your paint untill it floats...you need to add and experiment. you water hardness is 100% different than mine...start with distilled water. ♥♥♥ Thank ♥ You ♥♥♥ ♥Thank you for watching ♥

Hi, Loes! You can also marble on cotton and cotton blends... just use somewhat diluted silkscreen inks and heat set afterwards**. Silk is great for scarves but there is the limitation of the size of the tray [(scarves are generally long and narrow so the tray would have to be, too if you wanted a seamless print) and I think that you would have to use alum]. I did some marbling on t-shirts and they were excellent - I inserted a square of plastic the size that I wanted the printed area to be and gathered the rest of the fabric at the back into a rubber band. That made sort of a handle to hang onto to dip the shirt so the ink only touched the front area defined by the plastic square (hope that makes sense). Marbling is awesome and only limited by your imagination: if you can get it to stand still long enough you can marble it! (LOL! - looks sideways at the cat...) **Silkscreen ink is expensive... I suggest you only invest in one jar and play around with it 'til you nail the technique and then when you are happy go ahead and start accumulating other colours.

Ox gall is gall, usually obtained from cows, that is mixed with alcohol and used as the wetting agent in paper marbling, engraving, lithography, and watercolor painting. It is a greenish-brown liquid mixture containing cholesterol, lecithin, taurocholic acid, and glycocholic acid.

Hi, Diane! I saw on another video the use of something called "Photoflow" in place of ox gall. (Less painful for the ox, too!) The gall affects the spread of the paint and it is not required.
