So many people are asking what paint was used, despite the fact that she said it is "ink" at the start. Water based or oil based can be used. Also for those asking, she mentioned that the surfactant is Kodak Photo-Flo, of which you need approx 1% mixed into your water. (instructions are on the bottle.

Voyageur i think any container would just fine. I used a plastic food container that’s large enough to put A5 sized paper inside. I may have to buy a bigger container for A4 though

According to her website, the kodak-flo does not go to water bath but it is mixed with the inks themselves instead ; 3 drops of kodak-flo is mixed with 2 tsp of ink - the bath/vat is pure water; also she mixed 1 tbl of water with 1 drop of dish soap

we used to do this in my japanese school during calligraphy class. when we were done our work, we’d take the water that we use to clean our brushes and fool around with the ink, and then rip a bit of the newspaper we used to protect our desks from ink spills, and apply it just like in the video!

Elfshot Dunless we just did it for fun in class with small pieces of newspaper, we never really did any full pieces. but it’s really fun to see what kind of patterns that the water can make. my mom is actually a visual artist and she used some of hers to cover boxes, make book covers, cards, and lots of other things!

Hi. May I offer a suggestion for your meditation? I , too had the same problem with a mind that will not keep still. A few years ago, however, I learned a different approach. That is to simply 'observe'. (Actually, in a similar way to how this tutor describes watching the ink) . By this, I mean that if your mind is busy, then simply observe the busy-ness and comment to your self about how busy your mind is. (I am now watching the thoughts coming and going and new thoughts or feelings emerging...") I believe this works (For me anyhow) because at the core of the process is acceptance: An acceptance of what 'is' right now.; of what I am in this moment. An increased awareness without judgement. Sure, my mind is not quiet, and maybe I can only do this focusing for a couple of minutes before I get carried away into my thoughts again, but I do find it brings the deepest sense of peace than I have felt using other methods. I also guess its because I am no longer "lost " in my thinking; I am no longer subject to the wanderings of my active mind; I am simply and gently observing my thinking which, in a way, is giving my 'self' an alternative place to 'be': As a caring witness rather than immersed and washed away in the thoughts of an uncontrollable mind :) Hope that helps Good luck iain

I was so tickled when you brought up the cat whiskers! I find whiskers from my cats ALL THE TIME! lol I have a whole collection of them, I keep with my brushes. I have even given them out to other painter friends who don't have cats. They are great for manipulating paint and inks. The artist's mind... always cracks me up when some random thing I do/collect, is also something another artist does too. ;) Thanks for sharing

In Turkey, we call this art *Ebru* art. It is also used as a name for girls and my name is Ebru, so i'm really happy about it. We make beautiful backgrounds and flowers with it. Ebru also means 'dark clouds or rainy clouds'. I recommend to look at videos of it, because it is beautiful and satisfying to watch. 😊

Since suminagashi is just inks floating on water, adding a surfactant will lower the surface tension of the water to allow the inks to spread farther and stay for longer on the surface of the water. I add surfactant to the ink one drop at a time, testing as I go on the water, to get the amount of ink flow that I want. You may need to continually add surfactant to your ink one drop at a time as you go as it gets used up in the marbling process. @@mtpeacock Dish soap is indeed a surfactant, and I use it with water and a brush to create negative space. It is not the best to use with inks, though. For ink surfactant, I prefer Kodak Photo-Flo. Hope that helps!

In my 26 years , always owning a cat, I've found 1 cat whisker (was poking me on my bed sheet). Either I don't see them and they get hoovered up or they are shed outside. I find shed claw cases every couple months though.

I have had 2 to 3 cats through out my life and I only found 2 whiskers maybe they do get vacumed up .I do find the cat nails that have shed all the time.

Well since cats do not seem to shed whiskers, I mean personally I have never found any from my cats through the years, but there is abundant nail shedding...just use the nails. Or you could always paint the cats nails.

@@carpo719 well.. do your cats go outside? maybe you've vacuumed or swept and never noticed them? cats loose whiskers. its normal, nothing different to how you shed hair or eyelashes. but of course,. you might worry if all your hair or eyelashes were falling out. i've owned two cats, i noticed whiskers on the floor a few times but she was an indoor/outdoor cat. my current one, i've never noticed, but again she is a indoor/outdoor as well and i've only had her for 2 years compared to 14 with the other.

For those considering using cat whiskers please do not pluck them from your cat! They use their whiskers to sense things around them and can become frightened or disoriented when they are plucked or cut.
