I build that plane in march 2019. Some time ago i decided to change the blade because first one was worn out and refused to work. All the grooves on the blade was very shallow and unfortunately my sharpening wasn't correct.. That's why i reupload the video withs some changes. Ok, so how to make that kind of blade sharp? All you need to do is use bench grinder to make new bevel (remember about cooling) with little burr on the back. You should feel it under your fingers. Next and also the last step is stick cutting edge of the blade to some hardwoods end grain. It will remove the burr. After that the blade is ready to work. Materials: Beech wood Boxwood wood Some hardwood veneer Hide glue Boiled linseed oil Shellac orange. If you have any questions or sugestions just write a comment. Enjoy!

In 2006-7 I built a joining plain from paduke and maccasor ebony. The woods came from dunnage and a pallet respectively. I took it to a tool collectors club where there was an old British cabinet maker who accused me of using power tools in its construction. He refused to believe that an American could build such a tool entirely by hand. I use scraper chisels like you do to float the blade bedding. Excellent work. Greetings from the high plains of Texas.

Ha! I've not seen that method of removing burrs! Always something new! I get a lot of Douglas Fir here with just crazy grain, changing every cm. I need more planes now :P I have on my list to build a scraper plane, right after I finish my current project. I'll have to add the toothing plane to the list, that will definitely solve a lot of problems. Once again, Thanks kindly!

Excellent, as usual! Could it be that the blade was not working because the angle was so low (70 degrees).. most old toothing planes are above 80 and some go past 90 degrees). Also tooth size varies widely between planes, but in general blades with small teeth were intended for veneer preparation, while those with larger teeth fro figured lumber prep. The veneer toothing planes are steeper, ho the teeth will engage, the lower angle ones (still above 80 dgr) can have larger teeth. I'm interested in your take on the theory correlating tooth size and angle. All the best.. admiring your work!
@StavrosGakos Жыл бұрын
Thanks! The bed angle was copied from other plane, with new blade it works fine. I don't have more experience with different angles. Cheers
