I found one at a flea market with the depth stop for $5. I was looking for information about it to decide whether or not I should sell the plane. Should have known to check your channel first! I think I’ll keep it. The plane could be useful even for adjusting machine made dados or grooves.

That is a common mind set. I, on the other hand, would have 10 tools that are great at one task then one tool that is OK at 10 tasks. but that is what makes the sport geat, so many different ways to do things. and why would you get your woodworking advice from a cheff. LOL

I personally use both. In my shop I tend to use very purpose built tools whenever possible. Outside the shop however, I alwas carry a multi-tool on my belt and I keep a bunch of multi taskers in the car. I think the multi taskers, for me at least, are best for situations where you don't necessarily know what you might need.

I just got a 79 at an estate sale & am so happy you've covered it (though I wasn't super surprised you had): it's currently my only rabbet plane, so I am thinking I might press it into service for making normal rabbets. It also occurs to me that a carefully angled fence could allow it to cut sliding dovetails: the sole is narrow enough, and has a bevel on one side, so this seems at least plausible.

It is my top 5 favorite planes in my tool box. However it is not only a one function tool. My favorite use is for making sliding dovetails! The depth stop is key to making this work for that function I cut a small selection of different slopes for my sliding dovetails and attach it to the fence with double stick tape then I end up with perfectly cut sliding dovetails it will cut both the slot and the dovetails that slides. It even cuts the tapered sliding dovetails as it has a bull nose function on the left and right . I can’t remember where I originally read about this it was on someone’s blog I read about using this for multiple functions if I remember I will add a link to give credit to to where I learned about this from by far my favorite tool to make perfect sliding dovetails by hand with. I found my link where I originally read about this added function for the “79” I’m adding the link not ass to promote Derek but to be respectful and give him credit because it was his idea and where I learned about it I’m just passing on what I learned to help others get more from there shop time and tools. www.inthewoodshop.com/ShopMadeTools/SlidingDovetailsWithTheStanley79.html

it would not be great at trimming the edge banding as nothing would stop it from cutting into the wood behind the banding when it went too far. but if you watched it this could do the job.

@WoodByWright6 жыл бұрын
LOL yup. I am one of the reasons you still can not get a good deal on spoke shave blades. you use to be able to get a bundle of them for nothing!
@ketsub3 жыл бұрын
Hi James, I just bought a second-hand one, and went to sharpen the blades, but I noticed that the guides where the blades rest are slanted to one side. In other words, although these guides are slanted downwards, so that the blades can slightly protrude the sole of the plane, the blades are not parallel to the sole of the plane, which will not produce parallel cuts. It's strange, because I sharpened it the way Paul Sellers indicated in one of his last blog posts, and when the tip of the blades slightly protrude from the sole, and I rub them on the finest diamond stone, it is perfectly noticeable that the shiny part makes a very sharp angle in relation to the opening through which the blades protrude. Is it a "defect"? Did I get a faulty planer? When observing the guides where the blades rest, it seems that this inclination was originally made when this plane was manufactered, but this way I cannot produce cuts parallel to the sole of the plane. Is this supposed to be like that? How can I overcome this "problem"? Thanks.

A couple questions. When you cut in one direction, is the other blade dragging and getting dull? In other words, is it worth getting the two separate tools rather than the combination 79? Some of Stanley's specialty planes are insanely fussy to sharpen and set up. The tongue and groove plane with the rotating flip flop fence is an example. Is the 79 or its cousins hard to sharpen and set up? Does it work well across the grain for widening a dado? Excellent video. Thanks!
@WoodByWright5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. No contrary to popular belief dragging a blade backwards does not dull an iron. Even though some big names scream it. Lol This one is extremely easy to setup. It is only as fussy as you are picky about tolerances. Yes as a very low angle it works well cross grain too. Hope that helps.

Depends what you mean by a good price. You can pick up a pair of Stanley 98/99 for about £120. They are usually missing a lot of nickel plating, might have short blades and you have to be careful that they have the depth stops. Nevertheless, much cheaper if you want a user tool. If you are after bling then the LN is the best bet.

my go to chisels are the set from Aldi (the grocery store) but they only sell them once a year for $6.99. me second cheap set is the wooden handle chisels from Harbor Freight, the handles are painful but for the price the steel is decent. and you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between the steel on those and Le Nelson chisels with out a couple years of experience. after that my next choice is the cheaper set of Narex chisels. if you treat those well they will last a lifetime.
