As we swiss think (and the Germans clearly too, I guess it's a european thing) : I'ts better to have Equipement and not need it, than need it and not have it. Here in my Region there's quite a important Railtunnel going under the Alps, where there's million's of CHF worth of specialized Fire and Rescueequipement with all the local Fireunits trained on them, which likely never will be used... But IF something's going to happen it's a matter of Minutes to get it ready and going into Action... There's tons of such Equipement like in this Video around in Storage. For Years and Years it will only be taken out regularely for Training, Maintenance and Functionchecks, but if needed it's in perfect working Order and Personnel knows to use it blindly...

I suppose the train engineer sent a picture of the situation to headquarters and they decided to send this equipment. The train is only slightly off the tracks and it’s not leaning at an angle. If the situation was more complicated, then they would send a crane. I reckon this sort of small derailment happens in switching yards.

Amazing efficiency and fantastic piece of equipment. Seemed to be dealt with quite quickly. I wonder how much longer it would have taken Rail Track to sort that out, by the time they sort out the H&S paperwork, agreed working permits and conditions with the union then got there to cancel the recovery due to bad weather. Meanwhile the line stays closed for 3 days.

at 14:54... Between the two wheels, what are those little blocks? they look like they could come down and touch the rail like some sort of brake, is that what it is?
@user-marco-S5 жыл бұрын
These blocks are emergency brakes. If you pull the emergency brake in the train (or the train safety system goes into action), they lower on the tracks and use magnetism to make the train stop fast. In a Dutch train video ( /watch?v=Oh-3x2zu2yw ) you see them going up around 0:20 after the train did make an emergency stop.
@brettmaul28915 жыл бұрын
@@user-marco-S I was wondering what they were!!! I looked it up and dug deeper. what I found was Eddy currents. Fascinating, your answer really sparked my inquisitiveness. So Marco, could some of these trains also use the magnets in a non-emergency fashion for regular braking? How powerful are they compared to full-out dynamic wheel braking?
@user-marco-S5 жыл бұрын
@@brettmaul2891 as far i know, the system can only used for the emergency brake. I only know why trains have it and i don't have details. Not all the trains (here) have that system and are using a different system (i don't know what type system).

@@user-marco-S Thanks MArco - Still learning about the Desiros and the european rail network. I appreciate your knowledge - When I started railfanning I focused mainly on the western EMD and GE deisels, and drive truck. So the Hydraulic transmission desiro really sparks my interest! Makes sense. I actually think that if that is a Desiro 642, (Please don't quote me on this) it will not have dynamic brakes because of the hydrodynamic transmission... Which has a built in hydraulic fluid retarder (Brake) but would be far too slow to engage and stop the loco by itself in an emergency (Of course I am sure it has trainline air brakes as well).
