29.07.2019 - VN24 - Tractor sinks into river - brand-new rotator first time in Use

VN24 - Selm / Germany - In the morning a small mishap happened to a farmer in Selm shortly before 9:00 am. Somehow he slipped and fell into the river with his tractor while manoeuvring near the shore to the river Lippe (river in NRW). The driver was able to save himself unharmed while the Fiat tractor sank into the water. The fire fighters came with a lifeboat and laid out oil barriers to prevent environmental damage in the nature reserve. A salvage contractor arrived with a brand new special crane truck (rotator "The Biest"), which was the first time in operation in his live. This so-called rotator has considerably more possibilities than a normal towing vehicle due to its powerful and rotating crane boom. This rotators are rare in Germany. The tractor could finally be salvaged. The farmer brought it to the farm for repair.

In Berlin z.B. kostete zumindest vor einem Jahr ein Löschfahrzeug (mit Besatzung) 4,70€ pro Minute, ein Kranwagen der Feuerwehr 11,70€ pro Minute. In Bayern wurden vor zwei Jahren bei einem Unfall zwischen einem (vollbesetzten) Reisebus und einem Wohnmobil für den Einsatz von fünf Fahrzeugen und 28 Feuerwehrleuten 4.600€ von der Gemeinde aufgerufen (wobei das in dem Fall allerdings vor Gericht gekippt wurde, da die Gemeinde nicht nachweisen konnte, dass wirklich soviele Feuerwehrleute notwendig waren, die konkreten Verdienstausfälle der freiwilligen Feuerwehrleute nicht angegeben wurden, und die Feuerwehr bei dem Einsatz auch Dinge wie die Verkehrsregelung gemacht hat, die garnicht ihre Aufgabe gewesen wären, sondern eigentlich kostenfrei von der Polizei hätten gemacht werden müssen). Wer jetzt genau welche Kosten(-anteile) tragen muss ist je nach Bundesland unterschiedlich, wobei glaube ich z.B. Kosten für die Personenrettung (von Seiten der Feuerwehr; Notarzt, Rettungswagen etc. sind nochmal ein anderes Thema) überall von den Gemeinden getragen werden, während z.B. Aufwand für eine etwaige Fahrzeugbergung i.d.R. vom Unfallverursacher (bzw. dessen Versicherung) getragen werden muss.

Really cool to see the rotators are comming more and more overseas since it's rather common in the US and they've been there a while. But when you first get a rotator like this why not just go for a Scania or Volvo instead of DAF? I mean it makes sense when you first get a rescue veichle of this size and type.

I watch a lot of Ron Pratt's videos, so the... century, I think, (the big tridem) with quad-winch on the rotator with turret travel, and the beneath-chassis mounted outriggers look really good. This just looks like a normal underreach tow truck modified with a weird outrigger setup and a short stubby hiab that itself is modified with twin winches. A Rotator should look more like a proper telescopic heavy-duty boom mounted on top of a proper tow truck not... a Hiab, mounted to a proper tow truck. (vastly different handling profiles - should know, operated cranes and a hiab, the rotator should handle more like a crane than a hiab)

@@AlMcpherson79 in Europe we have very strict regulations about how cranes may be mounted and function, which limits what can be done, especially on a vehicle that strictly speaking isn't a dedicated crane. Every time you add more functionality you bump into another regulation that has to be fulfilled and things like Ron Pratt's movable boom mount is something that can't be done here, because it means the crane/boom isn't rigidly attached to the truck. I don't know about Germany, but here in Scandinavia we have some heavy duty lifting trucks that are almost entirely crane and not tow trucks, and they're far better at lifting stuff out of tricky places than a rotator tow truck ever will be with its limited lifting weight.
