Thanks for putting this up. Your video helped walk me through the project. I used a loaner tool set from Advance Auto. On reinstallation of the fan unit I found that using a wood working clamp on the upper shroud compressed it allowing a bit easier access to the shaft nut. Be very careful not to crossthread the fan nut as you reinstall. I used a Dorman replacement and found the last inch of the wiring harness was exposed. I covered the bare wire insulation with electrical tape to protect it from exposure and chafe.

You made that look too easy. Thank you so much brother. Question you stated that your AC wouldn’t get cold in idle, and my heat doesn’t get hot in idle. Does that mean I need a new fan clutch? Also, only my highest speed air conditioning works. I have a new motor blower as well as resistor for context. Is that sign that I need a new fan clutch? Thanks again for your help

I have changed mine out once and it’s not hard but it’s not easy either - took me half an afternoon! After 2.5 yrs now - My truck is again getting hot 200 degrees engine temp (in 100 degree Houston weather) at idol in drive thru line at McDonald’s and ac in not even cool. I’m thinking about supporting my local mechanic to change it as I have better things to do! 😆 Great video!

Thanks for taking the time to do this. I ended up buying the fan clutch tool from Amazon (~$50.00) and an air hammer for the task. I'd rather have the tools for any future use plus it's still less expensive than paying someone to do the job. I came to your video to double-check on the direction to turn the nut and a review of the task. Mine is an 03 3500 SRW Quad and it took some time to work through the stubborn nut. Ended up using a long pry bar wedged against the belt pulley nuts to keep it from rotating and that did the trick after some start/stop attempts with the air hammer. For the fan assembly removal, I worked from underneath the truck. Before unscrewing/removing the assembly, I put a piece of cardboard between the radiator and fan to minimize any radiator fin damage. Once the fan assembly was screwed off and with some patience it was easy to snake/rotate her down and then back up with the new clutch installed. Just remember to pull out the sheet of cardboard before connecting the wire connector and installing the bottom shield. It was an easy task once the nut was broken loose .

After looking at the bottom side of the fan shroud I noticed that I have a 2 piece shroud. I’ve got the same AC issue on idle. Live in Vegas and we are peaking at 115 degrees these days. The truck will stay right around 180 on idle since the engine isn’t under load but will keep climbing as long as it’s under load. The part where I’m confused about is even at highway speeds I’ll climb sometimes even past 210 degrees. I have an oem 180 degree Cummins thermostat. I think I’ll try the fan clutch and see if that changes anything

Probably your water pump. Pulley bearing wears out, gets squeaky. If you ignore it, it'll shred your serpentine belt which can damage other components when it comes off...like fan blades or fan clutch wiring harness. I speak from experience. Try spraying the water pump pulley with water (while running) and see if squeal goes away temporarily.

I got a question you might be able to answer. On my 2008 2500 cummins, i have the same setup there, and the fan seems to move with a reasonable amount of resistance, and it moves plenty of air at idle. My issue is that sometimes the fan just seems to be locked in for the whole duration of the drive. Checking the temp gauge, and it reads just under 200 degrees. When rpm goes up, the fan is just noisy as can be, and same with idling down. Would this be an issue with the fan clutch, or would it be an issue of the ecu telling it to kick on? Mind you, i dont use the A/C.
@hogie16853 ай бұрын
Any shop with a good scanner should be able to see what the ECU is telling the fan to do. I would check that first.
