Very informative! Leg cramps run in my family. My podiatrist recommended 800 mg magnesium daily which worked very well. When my cardiologist told me to stop taking it I halved the dosage to 400 mg daily the halved it again to 400 mg every other day. The cramps began to return. When I informed my cardiologist of this he relented and told me that I could resume the supplement. I now use 400 mg per day and have been free from night time leg cramps ever since.

She has some bad info. If you get a cramp while laying down in the bed you have no time to fool around while horizontal and the cramp is intensifying. You have to get out of the bed immediately, no matter how much it hurts and stand on the leg and then walk on it. If the cramp is severe and pain persists, a hot shower is helpful. I learned this from prolonged experience with statin meds, which I no longer take. Much better to control cholesterol by diet than by meds.

Dr. Andrea Furlan - I'm a neuro-muscular therapist with about 30 years in the practice. Interesting observation i have made over these many years that i was taught by a Japanese doctor: Cramps (esp nocturnal) almost always happen on the right foot/leg first. Why? It is presumed that like gout, which tends to affect the right great toe "first" and most often, our waste is compartmentalized in the human body in specific ways and kept at a storage point furthest away from the heart. The dying process demonstrates how waste accumulates as edema builds; first in the Right leg, then the left leg, then the right arm, then the left arm and then.... death. During the day waste in the legs is diluted with the help of gravity and the interstitial fluids we have stored there. At night when we lay down, the natural process of leveling sends the extra fluids out of the legs and up towards central cavity but the waste in those fluids stays behind and thus becomes more concentrated...... leading to the cramps. REM sleep is also a culprit as some dreams involve fight or flight and the hormones associated with those activities. Not much hard science here, just years of observation.

Being an avid SCUBA Diver, calf muscle cramps are quite common. According to the literature, cause is from dehydration, the cure grab your swim fins and pull back, stretching the calf muscle. This has served me well, similar to your wall stretch. Dehydration is caused by the dry air we breathe underwater, funny though your surrounded by water and suffer dehydration. Drink plenty of fluids before diving, usually with a salt pill added. Now that I’m in my mid 60’s I get the worst left calf muscle cramps imaginable due to a spinal cord injury. After multiple doctors visits, I can not find any relief, it usually last 1-2 minutes almost weekly. Hopefully more research will help the 30-40% of older people this effects. Thank you for your videos, I share them with my GP trying new ways to find relief from my lower back injury’s after three surgeries.
@carolmason9386 Жыл бұрын
I agree with your findings. I just added a post saying the same thing. For every muscle that cramps, there is an opposite muscle you can use to pull yourself out of the cramp. I am not saying in every case it's dehydration, however, in ours, it is. Stay hydrated!! 😁

@DrAndreaFurlan3 жыл бұрын

@whatwouldhousedo51363 жыл бұрын
I have two comments. First is that stretching is not really the most effective way to stop cramps- the most effective thing is to activate the opposing muscle (the antagonist). It works because (with a few limited exceptions eg. standing from a seated position) you cannot contract both the flexors and extensors at the same time- your brain automatically relaxes the muscle opposite to the one being contracted. So for a calf (gastrocnemius) cramp, you want to actively pull your foot upwards towards your knee, contracting the extensors in the anterior (front) compartment of your leg. This will inhibit the calf from contracting. Then you can stretch it to relax the spasming fibers. -The second thing is to add to the stretching technique shown in the video. We have three muscles in our calf complex, however the one we are concerned with is gastrocnemius, the most superficial one that is commonly thought of as our "calf". It actually has two heads- a lateral (outside), and a medial (inside) head. Look at any image of it and you will see it very clearly. While the stretch demonstrated is OK, it is more effective to isolate and stretch each head individually- you can do this by rotating your body at the hips while stretching, or swinging your opposite leg in front of your body to the inside and outside.

I get cramps often, l successfully treat them with a cold pack. I use a blue gel pack which stays cool even at room temperature and keep it under the sole ,works great for me

I have suffered from nocturnal leg cramps for over 30 years. The worse are in the inner thighs which are excruciating and difficult to remedy. Any advice for these horrible thigh cramps?

I have these awful leg cramps practically every time about around 5am-7am and beyond! I wonder that if the muscles constantly twitch in different areas of my calves is it muscle spasms or RLS? Basically just Charley horses which sounds nasty! But your video is very informative, and I really appreciate your wonderful presentation, and thank you very much! I will be try those stretches as I know I should.
