Night leg cramps have got to be one of the most annoying ailments to have. I've heard many patient stories over the years about waking up in the middle of the night due to leg cramps. They don't just complain about the pain but more importantly, how theses interruptions affect their waking lives as well since they are unable to get the sleep they need.

I am 70 and have had leg cramps all my life, even as a child. I have had some relief from magnesium and from iodine, but never totally got rid of them, especially when eating any sugar. I have recently been taking glycine and have not had a cramp anywhere since, even when eating sweets. I have never gone over two days without a cramp, but it has been 3 weeks since I discovered glycine and no cramps.

I recently went to foot doctor, he suggested to sleep with my feet up higher than my heart to stop nighttime leg cramps and IT WORKS! So far it’s been a week & no cramps! But for a former side sleeper, it takes time to get use to sleeping in my back… still a small price to not be woken up by pain.

It's not glycerine, it's glycine. It's an amino acid and I buy the powder from amazon. It comes in a 2lb brown bag and is the Pure brand. It looks and tastes like sugar but has no calories.

Muscle cramps are really hard to figure out what causes or triggers them. Dehydration is a major factor for me. Plus I have seen a relationship to having sugary foods before bed. I usually don't have sugar/carbs but when having dinner out ending with cake and ice cream almost always triggers leg cramps that night. I take magnesium malate every morning and then will take a smaller dose of a different form of magnesium before bed if I think I might have a leg cramp. That has changed things for me. Thanks for the information.

As a teenager I sometimes would get alternating leg cramps at night. Next day in school, I would hardly be able to walk. My P-E teacher never really believed me. But those next day after effects were painful. My main method to fix my cramps was massaging and beating them out. That takes time, which is why I had so much pain the next day. My preferred method these days is stretching. Grab your toes, pull towards you and straighten your leg. You force the cramps to stop. Sometimes when my wife gets cramps at night, I hardly wake up, just grab her foot and straighten her leg. Takes seconds, and I’m back to sleep.

Update. (You can read my original post below.) Neither pickle juice nor apple cider vinegar had an affect -- other than messing up my digestive system. Maybe vinegar helps people whose cramps have a different origin. My cramps happen at night. They're less likely to happen on days when I exercise. Stretching before bed helps. I suspect it has something to do with nerve impingement in my lower back. Here's what I wrote previously: Pickle juice! From what I've read, it's the vinegar in the pickle juice that makes it work. Why vinegar? The acetic acid in the vinegar has an immediate affect on the part of the brain that causes cramps -- cramps being neurological in origin. So I'm keeping a bottle of apple cider vinegar next to my bed. I'll post an update next time I get a cramp.

Yes pickle juice definitely works for leg cramps. Also Tonic water with quinine in it works great I by the six packs of Canada dry tonic water and keep one on night stand if I worked hard that day. But I recently was working. I'm in construction so I'm outside in the sun sweating a lot and going up and down ladders all day. My legs get a big workout. So I noticed on the way home my hands stated cramping to the point I had to pull over. I couldn't steer the truck. So I got out and stretched enough to get home safely. I researched and I've tried them all. So this one day when I was cramping in my arms and hands, I grabbed some apple cider vinegar drinks I recently purchased. It was cold out of fridge . Well I guzzled half of it and within minutes I felt great again and had no cramps that night. So I'm starting to drink that each day now .. 🙏🙏

Pickle juice works great for me. I use Bob's Pickle Potion # 9, myself. The trick with pickle juice is not to sip it; gulp it down as quickly as you can. It takes a few times to get used to it but eventually, you get the hang of it. I also keep a folding walker by my bed at night. When I start to cramp, I get up quickly, place my weight on my other leg, while supporting myself on the walker. I gently start swinging my cramped leg slowly for a minute or so and the cramp begins to release.

Good call. I don’t know why all the experts don’t know this... When one or both legs lock up at night and you're in that horrible excruciating panic, seconds count. Hobbling to the frig to retrieve the yellow mustard bottle may not be your best option, especially if you're on another floor. Keep the mustard bottle on or in your nightstand. Immediate, direct administration of mustard into your mouth via a squeeze bottle with a flip lid is your best bet. In your haste, don't bite the lid off in the dark; you might choke on it. With this procedure, you don't have to fool with utensils. Store the bottle upside down with the lid secured. When right side up, some liquid separates to the top and you have to squeeze past that. Pain relief is dose-dependent, but a mustard slam is self-limiting because you can feel the pain draining away. Wash down a big dose with water, as recommended by Fred N.here, (if you reach the dry-gag limit). Sounds counter-intuitive, but mustard does not have to be refrigerated. See ref. below. French's mustard has a recommended shelf life from manufacture of 18 months in plastic, 24 months glass. Not medical advice, here; just home-spun relief from old-time experience. Good luck. www.purewow.com/food/does-mustard-need-to-be-refrigerated#:~:text=According%20to%20French's%2C%20%E2%80%9CThe%20product,your%20mustard%20at%20room%20temperature.

Thank you for your enthusiastic video and trying to help we sufferers of nocturnal cramps. I first saw this 2 weeks ago and took on board your recommendations. However, I'm not doing too well...in that time I've had cramp in one or both legs at the same time or in my feet too most nights. I haven't got an exercise bike but as have bilateral hip replacements (1 cemented, 1 not) I find bike riding can cause groin cramp. I'm at an absolute loss what to do next as have tried and do it every day, the stretches, eat certain foods stay off others, drink apple cider vinegar in my water and drink 12 ozs of that throughout the day as well as drink plenty of other water. I only have 1 cup of tea a day and occasionally a coffee a few times a week. I even bought that expensive Caleb Treaze ACV with ginger and garlic to no avail.. Heck that stuff is hard to take neat too, getting the top off the bottle when you're in excruciating pain is no mean feat! I have moved every 15 minutes as recommended by many...I drink tonic water before bed...I have a product with 14 essential oils in it that I put on before bed and during cramps...I tried 1 bar of soap...painkillers before bed, plus a banana, listening to sound frequencies and healing meditations and hypnosis on here (those really do help btw) but nothing really stops them or eases the severity. I'm seeing my GP in 4 days time...if this is due to my herniated discs and stenosis as well as scoliosis, is surgery my only answer? I am at my wits end as this is impacting my quality of life so much now. Driving, walking, standing to cook or emptying the dishwasher etc all aggravate it and my legs and feet are threatening to cramp constantly. Sorry to be a moaning Minnie but anything else you could suggest perhaps please? My GP isn't a functional doctor so I am not holding out much hope for a great outcome but he may be able to add some leverage to the waiting game for my neurosurgeon appointment. I'm not a suitable candidate for amitryptalline either due to having an auto immune condition which would be aggravated by it. I'm not an advocate for medications, would much rather find a natural method to heal. 🤞🙏 Maybe 3 bars of soap is next...😁

@@WillChil466 ~ be sure to rinse your mouth and teeth very well after drinking the apple cider vinegar as it can be very harmful to your irreplaceable tooth enamel. You may try molasses to cut the astringency of the apple cider vinegar for drinking.

what worked for me was just diluting rice vinegar… half teaspoon or less of rice vinegar for 300ml to 350ml of Luke warm water 1 hour before bedtime… do not drink cold water especially before bedtime… and it works for me…. no more leg cramps at night, muscle twitching, and I get a better sleep… but the key to it for me was to not take any carbs… eat healthy foods in the daytime to prepare for nighttime and i went back to around 30 minutes of walk and stretching legs, thigh, arms, and hips in the morning right after i wake up, afternoon, and at night 30 minutes after lunch and dinner… it’s all about preparation for a good night sleep without leg cramps and muscle twitching all over my body… I’m going to try also Apple cider vinegar with the same diluted ratio… just so I can alternate between the rice vinegar… and will try other more vinegars just so I can get it anywhere especially away from home or travelling…

I'm 65 and started to have cramps in both of the feet during sleep a year ago. I related it to stress and light sleep. When I started to take medications that helped me sleep the problem disappeared.

Apple cider vinegar works. It’s the vinegar that triggers your nerves to stop the spasm. Your gut does not process what is ingested that fast. The process is neurological. Something in the brain is triggered by the vinegar to stop the reaction. That’s why pickle juice, mustard, cider vinegar etc works.

I started with horrendous hamstring cramping about 7 months ago and so far nothing has stopped them. They all began a few months after I began donating plasma so the initial thought was electrolyte deficiency and dehydration but increasing both hasn't helped. I stretch every day and I walk to/from work (12km) every day so it is not due to lack of motion. The only thing that brings relief is to use my TENS machine but it's not possible to sleep this way so I have to wait until it ends and this has caused a definitive reduction in the quality of my sleep. I've always been a side sleeper as laying on my back hurts my lumbar area quite a lot. TBH I have just gotten to the point where I've accepted that I'm never going to have a good night's sleep again and I'll spend the rest of my life living in pain.

Wow.. Really wow.. How I sleep really is really important.. How I sit.. But fortunately I don't spend very. Much Time on my but!! It's great to know that I am doing something right. I stretch all day.. I'm a builder!!! This guy is pure common sense... I don't know about the pillow... Move the legs around when you sleep.. And go around without footwear whenever possible..bedroom to sidewalk if there is no sand or even better.. Grass..make a sandbox... Keep moving!!! He is great.

The solution for me was tonic water----it has a little quinine in it, enough to help with the night leg cramps but not enough to cause medical problems. I drink at least one glass (8 oz) per day, usually a bit more. Since quinine reduces the production of blood platelets, I make sure to get enough vitamin C and dark green leafy veggies to boost platelet production.
