034 - The Scramble For Norway - WW2 - April 20 1940

The German Invasion of Norway is still very much in full swing. The German Wehrmacht is moving north from Oslo, where a Norwegian force is trying to halt them in anticipation of Allied reinforcements. The British do land in Norway, but don't necessarily rush to relief the Norwegian army. Meanwhile, Norwegian 'traitor' and 'failure' Vidkun Quisling rises to be the new leader of Norway - only to get rejected by Hitler again. Numerous powers are now trying to grab, restore or consolidate military or political power in Norway. It's a mess.

@@JK-cl3sj you don't have to worry that we will be silenced by Article 13 - it only pertains to stolen material - we have acquired the copyrights for any material we use, so we're fine, A lot of falsehoods abound about this legal framework. At the end of the day it's fairly east to dumb down to one sentence. Platforms like KZbin and Facebook can now be held liable for copyright infringements on their platforms, while until now it was only the creators who were held liable. KZbin and Facebook obviously don't like this and have agitated against it pretty heavily, spreading a lot of misconceptions in the process. Many of our colleagues have even been called in to meetings with KZbin management who have asked them to please rise up in arms against the whole thing. Creators who base their creation on stolen material are also in fact upset... but hey, they're stealing other people's creations!!! And there are without doubt many things that end up in the grey zone where it still needs to be worked out how we handle it. But all in all, it's really nothing else than saying that the bank where you have your money is also responsible for keeping it safe, and can't just say "hey your money in our bank was stolen, but that's your problem - we're just the bank".

Until recently most areas of the world were poorly mapped if mapped at all. With satellite images and more effort put into mapping, a large portion of the world is now relatively well mapped at least for civilian needs. So any general until recently would drool over the quality of the maps we have readily available for civilian use let alone military use.

There are some good stories like that in the Norwegian campaign. I have heard many of them, brave farmers. or just the local youth, taking their trusted Krag (Norwegian rifle) for a go at the invading army, driving the Germans to a holt or retreat.

I think it gets worse, the british newspapers were not already used to the "war silence" and they reported british intentions and plans publicly. They also reported false news of victories that were later used by members of the parliament as facts.

@@nicolasbertrand3932 With time they became more careful and the military also became better at managing the media. Even so, British newspapers were available in Berlin a day late for most of the war, delivered via Sweden, and Lord Haw-Haw used items in them to prepare his broadcasts.

@@vatonage1599 I saw a photo of Luxembourg's troops being reviewed, perhaps in 1939. It was a tiny force in 19th century style uniforms. SPOILER They did not seriously contest the German invasion in May 1940 and probably could not. Luxembourg was annexed to the Third Reich and thousands conscripted into the German armed forces or Order Police.

Just superficially judging by their looks they look quite the same, did Germany just use their basic designs from the previous war, or were there any major modifications added to the uniforms?

Trenches worked only two decades ago, surely well established bunkers with interconnected arcs of fire can wipe out anything that comes at them. Then they'll retreat like a broken wave. As the journalist and author Espen Eidum discovered by combing through archives, Sweden allowed Germans to move their troops and artillery with the railroad to the battles of Narvik. The Germans continued to use the Swedish railroad until about 1943. This is an important detail few make a note of when they discuss the occupation of Norway.

If im not misstaken the Germans asked to move troops through Sweden to Narvik, but it was Denied. Then the Germans asked if they could move medical personal to Narvik. Which was accepted. But the Medical personal was normal troops that has medical jackets and they "Hided" weapons.

A Swedish representative in Berlin saw the soldiers as they boarded the train and informed the Swedish government in advance. Not only did the Swedish government know, but they also vastly underplayed how extensively the railroad was used by Germans.

Spidermats As I initially stated, clear evidence of the Swedish governments knowledge about this was dug up by Eidum from old archives about 7-8 years ago. Please look it up for yourself. They were well aware of what was going on, and made a conscious decision to allow it to happen.

Hello Indy and Crew! I have a question which is related to the Second Sino-Japanese war, when the Japanese attacked China in the first days of the war did they attack Tianjin? Because with the Unequal Treaties the city was divided between the Great Powers. And if they didn't, did they attack when Japan formally declared war on the Allies? Keep up the good work.

For the Grenada invasion in 1983 - travel agencies all around Fort Bragg were cleaned out of tourist maps of the island. And the first US military maps of the Island were made from a combination of photo-reconnaissance images, encyclopedia entries and tourist maps. I remember using a military map that listed the location of every hotel and tourist attraction. As well as getting missions to drive down a road and then report back where it went. Trivia note when the alert for the invasion occurred none of us believed that it was anything other than a no-notice emergency deployment exercise - until we started getting issued live ammunition. Then there was a mad dash for the dayroom because the TV morning news was about to come on.

Indy uses a vast amount of books - he likes old fashioned paper. In general we also use academic research papers that are often only available in the university libraries, but online. At times for tricky subjects we do original source research and look at the actual historical documents (for instance; war crimes like the Katyn massacre, where there is too much disinformation to only trust secondary sources). Most of us, Indy included are academically schooled historians.

So I actually got some idea of what the map situation is like. I use the tourist maps that Arma 3 has and often use them to plan ops. It’s quite interesting though I suspect these are more detailed.
