World War Two

Күн бұрын

The Invasion and subsequent Battle of Norway has only just begun when the British decide to pull back. Poor planning and misfortune after misfortune harms the British campaign, which becomes very apparent this week while the fighting continues. Almost everywhere, except for in the far north, the Allied troops pull back under heavy German pressure.

To be fair. I can't imagine allied command was that concerned about norway regardless. They were selling iron to the enemy and denying them access to their waters. I mean that makes perfect sense as a nation that wants to be neutral but I can see why britain and france weren't massively willing to come to the aid of the norwegian people. In the allies eyes they made a deal with the devil and should not have been surprised that it went badly. The question is if britain got there first would they have welcomed the german troops and actively joined the war? who knows?

Also, as the war progresses, will we be getting episodes dedicated to individual personnel, and not just the typical World and Military leaders and Generals but decorated airmen and ground-pounders like Audie Murphy, Lt. Col. Robert Cole, Werner Molders, Adolf Galland, Douglas Bader, Hans-Ulrich Rudel, Erich Hartmann, John Basilone to name a few? Perhaps even special episodes talking about specialized groups like Fallschirmjäger/Paratroopers, the U-boot service where 3/4 of those who served never returned, or even the formation of Night Fighter squadrons? It's pretty cool to think about how quickly technology advanced between world war 1 and world war 2, and how drastically it changed the tactics required for successful operations. For example like near the beginning of your video mentioning that the Germans had overwhelming aerial superiority which gave a huge advantage in their favor against the allied forces in Norway. Which brings me to my question, in your studies have you found that the officers on either side had a tough time adapting to the new styles of warfare with these rapid advancements, much like the struggles seen in world war 1? Oh and as always, another excellent video! I always enjoy watching this series :)

The Tsar Of Salt To be fair, all of the ships were planned even before the war, but even that was in the late 30s which was when naval aviation first became a serious threat to surface units, so.... The United States had enough money so could afford to waste tens of billions of dollars on battleships and still build more carriers than everyone else combined, and the Axis powers stopped building them partway through the war and cancelled the later ones they had planned. Still doesn’t make the ones they actually built good ideas, though.

The Tsar Of Salt Had the ships been planned a few years earlier (when naval aviation wasn’t yet that capable), they wouldn’t have been obsolete, but as it happened these ships had the displeasure of being planned or laid down just as they were becoming obsolete, resulting in them being outright obsolete by the time they were launched. (It takes years to build a battleship) But all the navies of the world grew out of a “big gun” tradition, so in the worst example of institutional inertia in military history, they each spent billions of dollars building weapons systems they no longer had a need for.

Here's a possible question for a future Out of the Foxholes episode: Would it technically be possible for an ordinary German soldier to fight no-one but Poles between 1939-1945? We have The Invasion of Poland, then Narvik in Norway, the partially recreated Polish Army in 1940 France, the Poles in Tobruk with the Aussies, Czechs and Kiwis, the poles in Italy, Poles in 1944 France, and of course the Polish Army in the East. It just sounds like a cool possible happenstance. Loving the work by the way, keep it up.
@kaczynskis5721
@kaczynskis5721 5 жыл бұрын
Well, it was quite possible for an ordinary German soldier to BE a Pole. First of all, even before 1939 there was a significant Polish minority in Germany, mainly in Silesia and Pomerania. They were not popular under the Third Reich but their males were liable to be called up into the German armed forces. Then a large chunk of Poland was annexed to Germany - Poles living there often claimed to be ethnic Germans for various reasons - ethnic Germans were entitled to better rations and were not deported to make room for Germans as was the case with those who insisted on their Polish ethnicity. This second category was also conscripted into the German armed forces. 'Microcosm' by Norman Davies and Roger Moorhouse mentions some of these Poles in the German armed forces. A German corporal from the Rhineland named Schwalge was put in charge of some of them during basic training and enjoyed ridiculing their accents and bad German. Unexpectedly, Schwalge was sent to the front with them. He tried to change his tune but the Poles did not forget. At the first clash with the Red Army in Hungary they took the opportunity to shoot Schwalge dead.
