As a seafarer, I believe water access to the property will be key even if it is only at high tide. In fact your lives will hinge around the tides, which I assume are twice a day. From the few images you have shown us, there appears to be a rock causeway extending out from the shore in front of the house to the right side of the small island. When you look towards the mainland, to the right of this stone causeway there appears to be more water extending towards the house for a shallow draft boat to come much closer. This will be the only viable way to get bulky building materials on the site. So mapping the bay of it's water depths at low and high tide is a primary job.

I love that you are restoring the cottage sympathetically in keeping with its origins. I love the fire inset you put in the bedroom. My late husband and I lived in an old cottage in rural Ireland for some years. I look back on that time as idyllic. We loved walking along the foreshore looking at the cormorants and oyster catchers. Good Luck! 💚💙💜

Better get chopping a mountain of wood before winter, you'll be surprised how much you get through and definitely not a job you'll want to tackle during the colder months. I used to have a pet ram that was our lawnmower and guard sheep rolled into one, any unwanted visitors that came in our front gate (we lived near a rugby stadium) soon regretted their poor decision, he loved coming into the kitchen every morning for a slice of toast before we headed off to work.

just stumbled upon your channel and was enchanted by the landscape, the pace with which you present the material, the narration, and of course, the beautiful and very effective use of music. thankfully, there were three other episodes that i could watch to become fully engaged in your project and of course, wish you both all the success on this quite daunting project that you have taken on. like a number of other viewers, i find myself wanting to ask a few questions mostly about the logistics that you currently face. in no particular order, where is the source of the water that you have access to come from? is there electricity at the cottage and if so, is it from an underwater cable from the mainland? speaking of the mainland, i assume there is a ferry that you take across but does it allow you to take your car and if so, do you just leave it at the dock on your island and walk or take the quads the rest of the way. a boat of your own at high tide would definitely come in handy to haul things across the water directly to your cottage to avoid the trek from the dock. do you have another "home" that you can go back to or do you plan to stay on the island full-time while doing the renovations, especially come wintertime. i am sure that most of these questions will be addressed in subsequent episodes but i just thought that i would ask while they were on my mind. again, my congratulations and best of luck to the both of you (plus the sheep and cats, of course). p.s. the clamps that you found are swiss made aluminum clamps: (i.ebayimg.com/images/g/aVYAAOSwDA5kliLv/s-l1600.jpg )

Just a thought: if you aren't going to use that dried wood debris for firewood, (16:20 mark) why not build a few "bio-dens"? (structured slash piles.) The island bird life and small critters will investigate immediately and perhaps move into the new digs. I build them every time I thin a stand of trees, using the slash, ("brash" I believe in your slang) to build up a loosely structured "Critter-condo." You'll be pleasantly surprised at the diversity of both flora and fauna attracted to it. Cheers from the Willamette Valley, Oregon

Have I stumbled upon the beginning of a very nice new vlog series? In any case, what I've seen so far is promising. Two tips: - Make it more personal, tell us who you are and how you experience it. - I'm looking at it from the Netherlands, my English is okay, a Scottish accent is no problem either. But if there are also loud driving noises or background music that is too loud, it becomes difficult to follow. Pay attention to that and consider investing in some good microphones with wind shields. And then I will probably enjoy you a lot and I might become a fan! :)

Thank you for introducing the sheep. They are fun to watch. I was so excited to hear you spin. As an avid crocheter, I'm all about the wool. Love hearing the background on the animals. Sad that so much was just thrown into the sea. Why anyone would cover up stone is beyond me. I hope there isn't much to repairing the damage. What a find for the bedroom fireplace. It's beautiful. However the depth of the fireplace seems quite short. Building a fire will become an artform insuring little smoke makes it's way to the bedroom. Do you need fire in the day? What's the temperature day/night. Do you feel like you've been roughing it/ like camping?
@TheScottishIsle

We don't need daytime fires yet, but we could still use them for keeping the interior dry as it's quite damp. We've enough comfort that it doesn't feel like camping, but that might change with the major work beginning!

As some other commenters we came across one of your videos because it was suggested by KZbin. We watched all your videos and subscribed, as we would like to follow the developments concerning the challenge you have taken on this summer. We did a similar thing many years ago with an old Irish farmhouse. By the way, concerning the soot staining of the stone of the chimney of your house: it is the result of the soot remains in the chimney. It is like an oily substance, especially when it gets wet when the chimney cools. This stuff kind of drains into cement and stone to become visible at the outside. It was the same in our cottage.

Pardon my curiosity...is photography his profession? So beautiful. And Scott, please don't put your desk facing the back wall...place it out facing towards the view and put a chair behind it along the wall.@@TheScottishIsle

I like to listen to my favorite utube channels while I work in the kitchen, today, as I’m canning up the last of the tomatoes from the garden I’ll be attempting to catch up on your videos. The grate that you found is stunning! It is so cool you’re using it in the bedroom. TeresaSue.

Might I suggest that you aquire a small to mid size boat with a tilting outboard engine to transport your deliveries from town to your home. That is what we do. I live on my sailboat and anchor out as much as possible. So when we need anything, we travel by dinghy to town to pick up items and return to the sailboat again. That 1/4 mile trek of a goat path looks rather dangerous. 🧐

So many comments, hope you get to read mine and reply. Have yet to watch all the videos as just found you. Not long back from Scotland on a holiday in the Highlands, saw Highland Games at Nethy Bridge. 2 questions 1) What made you both go and live on an island with just the two of you living on island, how did you find the island etc 2) What is the line of work you both in as to be able to work on a island with just the two of you living there? I don't do Instgram so if you have answered these questions there I am so sorry I am unable to read anything there. Loving your channel and amazed it is so new and you have so many people following you already

Many thanks for your interest in our fledgling channel. This Saturday's (19/08/2023) episode should cover all of the questions we're unexpectedly garnering about our past, present and future plans on the island. Oh, and we read all of your comments and questions.

Hi Suzanne. We'll release the next episode tonight, then this weekend we'll be doing a talking piece explaining our background etc...seeing as people seem genuinely interested in us, which to be honest we didn't expect! Thanks for joining us. Kx

It's a shame we don't see more of the work that has been done. The cottage in the first video looked derelict and yet from this you can see the bedroom and passage seem to be in a good enough condition to lived. Beautiful scenery but it would just have been nicer to see how things are being done.

We are filming this in real time as we go along. It's not derelict by any means, but the interior is just the same as in the other videos - we have to live here while we do the work, so it won't be a quick job! Baby steps. :)

@@TheScottishIsle I’m sure you’ll get one. Keep an eye out for boat auctions. We had one recently on the south coast. The harbour authority puts them up for sale when the owners fail to pay their harbour dues and just leave them lying about. Good luck with your search 👍😊
