G'day Jimbo, Firstly, I want to join the cacophony of sound which echos the lines of "I passed my P1 Test 1st Go today". A great deal of it was due to your lovely pedagogy and videos. You're an Australian gem. Whole heartedly, thanks mate. Secondly, because I got my Ps (with your help) I can now go travelling all around Australia and do the quirky things I always wanted to but kept putting off as, living in the inner city and being an avid bicycle rider, I didn't see the need for a car. Thirdly, may I suggest a video idea for you -- as a way of giving back. Maybe you can make a video addressing what you should do, as a driver, after you have obtained your Ps. E.g. things that you shouldn't neglect doing just because you now have your Ps and don't have to play by the L rules, should you start experimenting with the way you drive -- i.e. customise your steering technique, should you consolidate your weaknesses, , etc. Thanks again mate.

Good point, the statistics will show this but I think it’s extremely easy and common to drop the ball once you get your P’s on things like safety and without parents watching is very easy to stop doing. I got my P’s last week and went for a drive on my own and within 15 minutes I could tell that with that feeling of freedom, (not that I did do it) but noticed how easy it was to just start letting go of all those things we had to do for so long before. Something that could help is reshaping how people see the test, so more people realise that the safety features we are tested on (and the large quantity of experience hours) are not to drag out the process, but to keep you safe and alive once you’re off and driving solo or with a group of friends.

Hi Jimbo, I have done a littile calculation regarding the yellow light here. If the traffic is running at 40 km/h, which is equivalent to 11.11 m/s, a safe stop distance is about 26-30 meters, which is around 3 seconds brake action. We all know that when driving, the safe distance between cars is at least 3 seconds distance. Let's assume one car is driving in the queue, and the driver sees the yellow light is on. In theory, the first car that would be able to safely stop at the yellow light would find that itself is usually the second car on the turning lane. Meanwhile, the car at the front is just crossing stop line and move into the intersection. Any position less than this or wet weather or situation that heavy vehicle queuing behind will not be safe to stop. So when a good driver maintaining the 3 seconds distance to the front car see yellow light on, and the front car has alreay pass the stop line, in most cases, you are just at 30 meters threshold or below, which you can simply just pass the yellow light. I am using this to make the deicision making a bit simple on road. At very slow speed, 1-20 km/H, taking brake is more easy. Stopping at the yellow light can not go easier. So when car are queuing one by one at low speed, when driver sees yellow light and his back is safe, weather is safe, then take brake shall be fine. To sum up, yellow light on, moving at 40km/h, being a second car in the turning queue, 1st: if the car at front is starting to cross the stop line, then stop; 2nd: if the front car has already entered into the intersection, then go through the traffic light, dont stop. Now if you are not the first car in the lane and driving less than 40km/h saying 30 km/h and keeping a good distance to the front, you shall be fine to stop. If you driving over 40 km/h, get ready to slow down is much better. How does this sound?

I failed turning right through a yellow light that turned red when I was completing the turn, I could of stopped but nerves had me forgetting to slow down enough to stop. Lesson learnt! I passed 2nd time with 99% 😅

I just failed with an F8 at zone 1 when my vehicle rolled backwards dramatically after I thought I had started the engine (I turned on the dash for the roadworthy check but later forgot the engine). I knew right then I had failed. Try to stay calm, collected, and be very careful. Failing isn't the end of the world, as I've just learned, so give yourself time to think and act. Funnily enough, the testing officer still let me drive up until zone 10 before we returned to station.

You should slow a bit approaching the green in preparation for the yellow. If you get to the point where you are too close to as safely stop and it's still green, then get back on the accelerator.

Yes welll that's what most do when they have passed but if safe to stop at the yellow please do. Note that if it is dangerous to stop at the yellow then definitely go through.

Well it really depends on the specific situation. If you were able to easily merge but didn't and then unnecessarily holding up traffic then maybe yes.
