I recently started painting with oil and cold wax thanks to your inspiring videos. I'm having a lot of fun with this. I'm a senior and enjoy part time fine art courses at our local college. Presently I'm taking a mixed media course. For one of my projects, I used oil and cold wax on Arches oil paper, a first for me. Great paper! Great media!!! I love the feel of application. My piece is small. I used a colour shaper. I saw where you randomly tore a piece of paper and used it to mono print, so I did that. What a great way to create repetition in a composition. I used the same piece to mono print, trace around and paint the shape and or outline and create a halo effect around it. Creating different similarities. Thanks for the great videos!!!

Hi Pam. Another great video, can’t wait to see the follow up. A couple of tools I love with cwm, my fingers and those heavy duty claw shaped scrapers that rip through layers of old cold wax. Sometimes I use them to make lines and sometimes I use them over the whole painting to reveal a beautiful surface that I am then unable to figure out where to go next! If I am using inks to make an undersurface I recently used reeds from my garden. I used the rounded top and it gave me some unpredictable lines. I can only use each reed once before it falls apart but it was fun to play with and made me think that there must be other interesting things to use from outside.

This is a new medium for me. So far, I love the silicon spreaders and serrated spatulas I've found - but I've also had fun with gathering items on my desert walks: dried cholla branches, palm frond stems (those gnarly thorns on the edges make great mark making!), feathers, and a leg bone from some unfortunate critter-turned-food source (yuck, I know but it was very old and completely dried - and yes, I use gloves...). I have found that using organic tools found while taking a head clearing, meditative walk helps free me for what I put down on panel or paper. I love the whole intuitive process. So far, it's become a winding down tool for me (I still teach full time so quiet time after being with 31 energetic 9-10 yr olds and a dozen cranky adults is essential!). Best "therapy" ever! I try not to analyze at this point but just loosen up and get familiar/proficient with the wax, oils, and other tools. Did you not work on the far side because of the pool that was on the floor? Or was that intentional? I know that you put a lot of work into 3/4 of it but you seem to not put anything into that far corner and when I looked there was a fall on the ground so it wasn’t really easily assessable. I wondered if you just didn’t push out the canvases because “you just didn’t“, or you didn’t do it because you purposely wanted to leave some negative space there. I love your work!

Sorry if the answer is obvious, cold wax is a completely new thing to me. Again... bless you for taking the time to patiently share your journey.
@PamelaCaughey5 жыл бұрын
Hi Randall! Thanks for your comment and question regarding working in cold wax/oils. There a quite a few advantages to using cold wax medium with oils vs traditional oils - especially if you use my method which speeds the drying over traditional oils, makes the surface stronger than with cold wax medium alone, and creates a subtle satin finish. I teach these things in my online course and you can definitely use the cold wax and oils over acrylics but again, there are some things you need to know here. I encourage you to check out my online course if you are interested in instruction regarding the nitty gritty of working with the cold wax/oils on top of loose acrylic beginnings! This looks like so much fun. Right now, I am mark making on smaller pieces. I would really love the space and excuse to make large pieces like you. I feel that size calling to me. Thanks for demonstrating making monoprints on the canvas to create the repetition of shape and line. I'm going to use that now.

Hi Shelley - I think that's why I like working on the floor sometimes - you can really move things out of the way even if you don't have the wall space! :)!!

Hi again: A couple of questions...did you put anything on the panels before the powdered graphite...and can you share what brand of panels you are using.? Thanks so much, Valerie
@PamelaCaughey5 жыл бұрын
Hi Valerie - I did prime both wooden panels with two coats of Golden Acrylic White Gesso - you could also use a colored gesso or Gamblin's Oil Ground but that is a bit more of a process so I go for the water soluble prep. As for the panels, I showed the backs of the panels while taping with the hope that if you are not able to get panels of this size, you can have a local carpenter or cabinet shop make them for you. I got these from the University Bookstore - this size was about $150 - they were recently bought out by Barnes and Noble (do my dismay) so the art supply section has been hacked to pieces and I will always have to order my panels from them which takes about 2 weeks. However, a local cabinet builder can make these for a better price as long as I order several at a time ;) Great question! Thanks! :)

You are very generous handing out information. My favorite tools are rags, credit cards and drawing on paintings with charcoal.

I love watching you paint Pamela! My favorite tool is the squeegee. I have just started with cold wax/ oil and abstracts. Equally love using acrylics! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Sharon - wonderful to know you also enjoy both mediums :) Does one ever have enough squeegees? Thank you for your comment ;)

Hi Pamela, I've just watched this wonderful video and been inspired to go to larger works. You are a born motivator! I use a range of the usual tools ( and then have lots to clean up, including my fingers!) my favourite tool right now is an old fashioned nib pen dipped in Aero Color. Once dry the beautiful marks and drips show through later layers. I've also screwed up block chocolate paper which makes unexpected marks. I also close my eyes sometimes when making marks with my weaker hand... it's such a different result. Thank you so much for sharing.

Hey Patricia! How wonderful to hear from you! I miss you! Given you live in NZ - your tools sound very different and intriguing to me - and unfamiliar! Like, what is Aero Color? And, "Block Chocolate paper"? Hmm.....I am soon going to do a video on a painting using wrappers from lots of different kinds of chocolate. Who says you can't have your chocolate and eat it, too? Much love - miss you! Happy Painting!!

Hi Pamela! I've started the on-line class and am collecting tools and mark making materials. I've worked with a messermeister and really enjoy using that tool with acrylics and acrylic mediums. Anxious to get into cold wax and oil!

That's really great, Elizabeth! I've not tried the messermeister with acrylics but I think I will - great idea! Thanks for your comment ;)

Just don't throw out those painty papers, they can be used again and make great collage material. Or cut up to make backgrounds for smaller pieces, like art cards and envelopes.

Thanks for sure - I agree - very useful ;)!

That was very fun to watch, Pam. I have just started using cold wax and i got some interesting patterns with these foamlike furniture leg covers that came on a sofa I had delivered. They have a diamond shaped weave that's easy to spread as wide as you'd like.

Such a fun video! You really demonstrate the idea of the play stage and how nothing is really planned, but is a discovery. My favorite tool you used was the long, bouncy rod. It took away control and allowed the play stage to really take on a life of it's own. Can't wait to try it! Thanks, Pam! Can't wait for the next video!

What a great video! Looks like so much fun. Thank you for your generous sharing. My favorite tool at the moment is my "5 random orbit sander by porter cable, but it's always changing. A more honest answer would probably be whatever tool is in my hand :) I love all the great ideas for tools in this thread thank you for this question. I saw at least a 1/2 a dozen inventive tools I will have to try!

Hi Elvi! Oh well - just the play stage - I'm curious where it's headed! I didn't know I was going to do a monochromatic painting but somehow I became quite entranced with just blue, black and white!! I"m so glad you are enjoying the course- so thankful you are part of this wonderful group! Happy holidays to you and Rein :) xoxo Pam

WOW, so much fun. Love this so far! Now I have to make one of those loooong brushes. My favourite too, is for encaustic and it's these small hole tools that are used to make hollow holes, ( punches), they come in a 9 size kit. Harbour freight has them cheap. They are made of steel so they can be heated and if filled with the wax you can melt if off. Thank you again for your hard work on these wonderful videos. Happy Holidays to you and yours. Francesca

Thanks Pamela for your openness and sharing! I love using a very large offset spatula -- on the flat, with the end, and on the edge for making large gestural lines cutting through to colors below. Also large clay shapers for more detailed areas also in a subtractive way. Also brush like plumbers helper drain clearing tool... . It's flexible! Love the feather duster and "long - long" handled brush!

Hi Selene - those are some great ideas! I have an offset spatula - will have to try it! I love all the potential edges and corners on that one - thank you for sharing ;)!
