Shifter issue? Brake light issue? Im posting this on multiple videos ive just seen for brake light and especially SHIFTER not working or pressing in. For temporary move of the car.. press the button on the side of shifter down (its a circle and may have a cover you need to pop off-its a bypass or failsafe for shifter if it doesnt work) and you can put into drive, you need to press it down every time it goes back into park though, until fixed. The issue will most likely be fuse 42-15amp, (under driver side footwell area-pop off the cover and replace it) especially if your brake lights arent working. The issue will be the wiring in your hatch. It will detrioirate and get exposed and wires will touch each other or water or whatever the reason is for it to blow a fuse. So also seperate the wires you see a bit, tape them with electrical tape and make sure nothing is exposed or able to touch something else) (it cant be another reason too but this is a great way to start if it is just brake lights and shifter not working) Anyway, i hope someone finds this helpful. I just figure it out for my 2002 ford focus zx5 automatic. - after friggin tearing apart the center console however. smh. Good luck yal.

Thank you for helping me trouble shoot. The wiring harness turned out to be my problem. The bypass with a screw driver was a huge help (was stuck in a customers drive way).

Just saved me 2 grand. My mechanic did every step except checking that critical connection.. My car is an ‘06 wagon, loss of rear wiper, breaklights, won’t shift into gear.. just checked; 3 wires completely broken and several more are close.

I'm having the opposite problem on the same year focus (4 door, not hatchback if it makes any difference) My shifter slides very smoothly and never leaves park. I drove yesterday and it's my daily driver. Any ideas.

Sounds like the shifter linkage has broke or came out of position. Shouldn’t be an expensive fix. Just start by removing the console around the shifter and look for something dis-connected as you move the shifter back and forth. Hope this helps

You'll have to press the brake before the vehicle will allow gear selection. Most like a brake (or neutral position) sensor is failing, or maybe a short in there.

how the F is it fixed? i tried to tape them up a bit so they dont touch at least but still doesnt work. Fuses 31 32 are ok. If this is the issue then how do i fix??

There is a solenoid in the shifter box itself. Supposed to activate when brake pedal is pushed down. If solenoid is bad, Park will not release shifter. Might need a new solenoid.
