Ford LIED About My Focus Clutch... I Replaced It For NO REASON *TCM Failure*

This is the last video I'm going to make about the Focus... but Mel Hambelton Ford diagnosed it a month ago or so, told me the car DID NOT have a TCM failure and the A clutch was simply completely worn out. It would be $1,000 between $1,300 for them to replace the clutch. I bought the factory clutch and did the job, and it turns out it was a failed TCM the whole time.
One transmission took the Ford Focus from being an extremely reliable and affordable car, to being the laughing stock of compact cars, the Powershift DCT. My girlfriend drives this 2015 Focus and with less than 70,000 miles on it, it's ready for an early funeral. We've got the dreaded P0902 Clutch Actuator A code.

Hi JR. I think a couple of months ago when you first brought this Focus to the channel and talked about transmission failure, i posted a message about TCM failure in this units. I'm telling you this because i work in a transmission repair workshop here in Spain and in our experience with this DPS6, you don't actually need to replace the TCM....you could even crack it open and fix it first, to prove it is the actual issue (it won't last that much, but it's a good test) ... eventually it will fail again, and you might end up changing it. As a matter of fact, even while I'm writing this, you must be editing the video where you are changing it 😂. But for what it worth, i share my experience with you nad the others. First of all, clutch installation was all good. You did it just perfect. Don't worry. Second, changing actuator motors was the right move to discard some actuator failure. Last, TCM can be fixed, it's pretty hard to crack it open nicely, but once you do it, failure is in connection between internal spades and main board. They aren't welded, they are just a couple of spades that connect by pressure and eventually loose that pressure and fail. If you resolder every actuator connection in your main board it will 99% fix the problem. There are many YT videos about it. I Hope you could give it a try, it will make nice content to this Focus. Nice videos like always, keep it safe!

@@WatchJRGo I know you have the good sense to cut your losses and not waste your time trying to fix this trans. This trans is commonly known to be problematic. You did this for clicks and btw, I am not criticizing you broadly for your decision because even though you are doing this for clicks, you are shining a light on how even large car companies like Ford overreach and release a 'cheap' trans for 'marketing' benefit, purporting it to be something it isn't. You work on cars, I design them and have worked for FordMotorCo in their engineering department. A last note, you likely know nothing about. There are no secrets in design and engineering. Engineers who create cars know where the skeletons are buried. Development i.e. design validation testing doesn't lie. They know if they fail and when including destruction testing. They are given an assignment by their management aka a cost target and a time line. They know this trans is a POS and many outsiders including those in the comments who have worked on many of these, know as well.

To be honest, the auto manufacturers brought this on themselves, they won’t pay out a proper amount of money for labor on warranty jobs. Techs get tired of getting ripped off and leave to go work at an independent shop leaving only technicians that aren’t good enough to work at an independent shop or techs that have been at the same dealership for 20 or 30 years that don’t give a shit anymore

@@v745ti I just had my car into a dealer 3 days ago, hoping for a diagnosis of a bad TCM, which is under warranty still, and not the clutch, which isn't under warranty anymore. I paid about $200 for a diagnosis labor fee to be told it was a bad clutch and will be $4,200 to repair. If it was a warrantied repair that needed to be done, they said the $200 diagnosis fee would have been waived. I am not getting it taken care of right away because I found that ridiculous, but now after watching this video and realizing there is a chance they just flat out lied to my face, I am more pissed off than I was 3 days ago. 😡

Will be worth pulling the TCM then and inspecting the PCB on a bench under and magnifier. I do a lot of electronic restoration work for Saabs, and the biggest thing is cracked solder joints from many heat cycles. Particularly in the area of the large MOSFETS which drive things. Get a Flux-Pen and some nice Rosin Solder and just reflow anything that looks bad. Typically the solder joint will look a dull grey rather than shiny silver, you should see tiny grey circular lines in the solder joint indicating a crack.

Satisfying great job, JR ! You are now Ford DCT expert by school of hard knocks. Solved all known weak points, including poor OEM electrical grounding, which might have caused TCM fail. If GF likes car, it's now a keeper. Hope GF seeing that ambition and commitment, loves you more.

my coworker had one of these the pos shook like you were learning to drive a manual everytime you started from a stop. dealers wouldnt do shit even though it was under warranty. a dump truck rear ended him totaling the car. he was ok and he bought a Mazda. he said it was the best outcome he could of hoped for with that car.

I never comment on videos but! People who have never worked on vehicles think they are experts. I spent most of my life in the automotive repair business and I think you are really good at diagnosing and repairing all makes and models. I would NOT respond to the critics of your work. I promise you even the best tech in the business makes mistakes every now and then. I would have you work on any vehicle that I own. To heck with the naysayers. Your work is excellent in my opionion.

I admire you Sir,most skillful mechanic I have ever seen on YT si right here ladies and gentelman so please be quiet and praise his work. I understand everything you did on this Focus, you gave it all,but it wasn't enough. I myself am driving Focus MK1 European Model and manual.. My sweet God it's nice car, very good for cruising around on highway especialy ,but when something brokes down it's can be very difficult to diagnose and repair the problem. So yes we love our Fords but they don't like us that much :)

I got lucky on my 2012 Focus Titanium. My TCM failed and left me on a highway on-ramp for half an hour. Luckily a few months before that ford had sent me a letter saying they will replace the TCM for free. Ford told me the TCM is highly back ordered but luckily my neighborhood stealership had 2 on the shelf. After I got it back I put it into sport mode and drove it like a rental car. Since then I have had no issues. Also you can fill the trans from the vent port on the top you just need a long funnel.

Good luck with Ford or the local dealer to admit that they do not know how to correctly diagnose or much less have the integrity to admit it ! I guess they never met a buck they wouldn’t pas! I hope the sealer and or Ford realizes just what trying to save a few bucks on a known defect can end up costing their business model in the long run! I hope the bad pub that they will probably receive is worth not just doing the ethical thing in the first place ! It certainly will effect their bottom line in Wichita , but it is not to late to make it right.

I took my old Jeep CJ7 to the dealer back in the early '90s because I couldn't find a vacuum leak. I paid them $100 (a lot of money in the early '90s) all the did was tell me I had a vacuum leak. I asked them where it was and they said they don't know. I never went back to that dealer again.

I had a similar problem with my Honda CRV. The SRS module failed so I took it to the dealership after having it initially diagnosed by a local garage. The dealership told me they would have to do another test even though I presented them with the original Bosch test data with the error codes. They then kept the car for nearly a week, failed to call me when they had finished and when I turned back up had the cheek charge me €150 for the identical report. Then they told me they couldn’t repair the module as Honda had stopped making them. After much hunting around I found a local auto electrician who obtained a used module and then programmed it to the car; the car need a vehicle test and with warning lights on the dash it would have failed. I then sent the original module to a company who reset it for less than €100. Some basic research told me that Honda stopped making the part some years ago. Dealerships that I contacted here and France and the U.K. told me they had given up on these modules and were refusing to touch this problem. My 2008 CRV has just 145000 miles on the clock. It’s serviced twice a year as it’s diesel and drives wonderfully. I love the car and it’s a great workhorse. It’s all about gouging money. I was going to purchase a new CRV but they are now made in China. I bought something else instead.

I watched all the episodes of the Focus trans and was curious about the tcm. I found a 2 year old vid by another youtuber. At that time there were 44,000 tcms on back order and he went to a junk yard and paid $40 for one. Since they fail so often he was taking a chance but with $40. He then had to go to a dealer and get a reprogram for $125 that was his exp and it worked. So junkyard and reprogram. If I had the extra bucks and gas in the street I'd get a generac for the power outages. Big deal here in the Northeast with the wind snow and ice. Watchjr is always the first vid of the morning. Thanks

My guess is that they will say it’s the clutch assembly so they can replace that too (since most ppl don’t have the ability or knowledge to do it theirselves) and when they get in there and realize it’s not the clutch (knowingly or unknowingly) they can have the TCM replaced and get paid for that as well. Basically where it takes all of the responsibility for a misdiagnosis off the tech/dealer. If the clutch is bad, the customer pays for it, if the TCM is bad, either the customer would never know or they could double dip, and still get paid for both without coming out of pocket.

One thing I learned many years ago, is never use someone else's diagnosis! Always spend some time going over the issue yourself to make sure someone else's diagnosis is correct, as I often find there not correct. Today's mechanics have become "parts replacers" not true mechanics that can figure the issue out themself.

I'm really glad my 2011 Escape doesn't have the Powershift transmission. Mine has a 6F35, which isn't a perfect transmission by any means, but it can last a very long time with 40k mile fluid changes. I have 133k miles on my Escape, and it still shifts flawlessly. I don't understand why they didn't use these transmissions on the Escape and Fiesta. It shifts really quick for being a regular automatic transmission. It reminds me of the Volkswagen Tiptronic transmission, it changes gears instantly. I also had a 2005 Jetta 1.8T with the Tiptronic, and that transmission was really reliable, despite all of the negativity it got. If you don't change the fluid, of course it's going to fail. It's just like not changing the oil in your engine. I sold that car to my friend 3 years ago, and he's still driving it today.

I’ve got to admit that I watched this video series because I have a 2013 Focus (trouble free at the moment) that my son drives. The clutch replacement video was good, and I don’t see anything to fault you on with the actual installation. The only issue I’d have is blindly accepting the diagnosis by the dealership as being accurate. Even the swapping of the actuators was done as a last resort, after the clutch was replaced and failed to resolve the issue. Never trust the dealership, good diagnosticians are few and far between. I do hope that the dealership ends up doing the right thing here and I’ll be looking forward to hearing the outcome.

Tropical ford in Orange County FL tried the same with me on a ford fiesta with the same transmission with only 84k miles. They told me it was the clutch and that it cost 4k to replace parts and labor. I dropped the transmission and replaced the dual clutch complete system. Still the same problem and upon inspection the clutch was not bad, it was the TCM. Took it again to the dealer and told them it was the wrong diagnosis, they replaced the TCM and problem solved. They should have paid the cost of the clutch and labor, the design was the issue, not the owners fault..

On top of that is that Ford itself makes it very difficult for anyone to reprogram a TCM, like that will help on theft prevention or something. I am leaning to a Right to Repair bill, if you purchased a car, why are you not able to fix it on your own?.

I would curious and put a scope on the 2 circuits. Since the TCM is getting a feed back to trigger the code. I would scope capture the failed TCM. Then jump on a wave form forum. See if somebody could give you a known good one If the signal coming back to the TCM are the same on both. The only answer left would be a failed TCM. JUST a thought.

Hey! Back when I was working at Ford, I heard that these transmissions develop severe TCM problems with something as as loose grounds. I'm not so sure if you still have the thing around, but if you do, check your grounds and make them larger. Also, you need Ford IDS software to reprogram the TCM module and reset all the touch points, and run the factory calibration process. Hope this info helps.
