The scariest part about Mulan's sacrifice was that she didn't go to be a hero. The most likely scenario would be she'd take her father's place in the army and die in battle. She was willing to lay down her life for her family and it is truly the bravest most noble that ng anyone could do.

And yet in the remake, it took all of that away.. by giving her superpowers
@catra17332 жыл бұрын
Exactly- like the remake didn’t convey the same emotions and the same risk that she took as the original, the original was able to show so much emotion and really understand that her actions are for her father and her family and she is ready to die for her father. Newer one doesn’t show the same stuff
@katerinaaqu2 жыл бұрын
To add more maybe she thought it would be the only way she would bring honor to her family. She knew she was clumsy as a future bride the way she was being trained to be (the matchmaker made a fool of her before the whole village) or that she nearly spilled the beans about her father's weakness before everyone (Fa Zhu who didn't want his weakness to be shown so that he would be honorable) so she felt she would never bring him honor anyways. She would have taken the decision that dying in the battlefield would be the best shot she had...

As a kid I never knew why she closed her eyes before she cut off her hair. Did she just really like her hair or something? After rewatching it more recently, I realized why it was such a big deal: once she cuts off her hair, there's no going back. Her short hair was evidence of what she intended to do. That moment of hesitance before she sliced off her hair was...golden. I fell in love with this movie all over again simply for that moment.
@lacrimosa38682 жыл бұрын
A bit late here. To add on to your observation, in ancient Chinese culture it was considered a grave taboo to cut one's hair unnecessarily. Ancient Chinese considered hair as a part of their body, granted by their parents and must not be simply cut. They would not cut their hair unless someone died or as a form of punishment. Mulan cutting her hair here has that extra bit of significance because as a girl she must especially keep her hair long, but to join the army she had to break the taboo.

@n0wheregrrl4 жыл бұрын
@@clary7404 And? Rey was getting her ass handed to her by a severely wounded Kylo who'd just fought her friend first. She was _going_ to lose if that fight carried through to a conclusion. And unlike Luke, she was established at the beginning as an experienced fighter (with a staff), yet she was still unable to hang. Honestly, I don't see the point people think they're making about Rey. Sure, she figured things out on the fly, but so did Luke. We didn't even know you could Force-grab shit until Luke just arbitrarily decided he could do it on Hoth. Luke never trained to use the Force to make intuitive shots with his fighter, but he still had no real trouble winging it with barely a nudge from Obi-Wan. It's not like Force-users figuring things out on the fly through inspiration is anything remotely new. As for the most recent trilogy in general? Yeah, it was bad, but it wasn't really because of Rey so much as because of a tug-of-war between two very different directors with very different visions ... not to mention the fact that JJ Abrams is a talentless hack. Rian Johnson at least tried to take Star Wars in a new direction, even if he did stumble at times. Still, it had (in TLJ at least) the best version of post-RotJ Luke I've ever seen, as well as some of the best lines (e.g., "Let the past die. Kill it if you have to."). So it wasn't a total loss. Or to put it another way: at least there was TLJ, because otherwise the trilogy was a total derpstorm.
@clary74044 жыл бұрын
@@n0wheregrrl I don't think we watched the same movie. If you are talking about TFA, she did win that fight. Kylo was on the ground after she won, and she would have finished him if the ground didn't collide. That is the only thing did not happen with that scene. The issue most people take with Rey is that, though we all agree she would have been a good fighter taking consideration of her upbringing, that alone isn't enough to justify all of her powers and abilities. She knows how to swim and navigate even though she is from a desert planet, clearly stating she never saw green or water before. She comprehends the force amazingly, and can use it even though she never trained properly. She speaks wookie, somehow, even if Jakku has no sights of wookies whatsoever. Everyone seems to like her for no reason, even the villains. The old heroes are mesmerized by her suddenly. Not to mention, they spent the entirety of the trilogy telling us that her parents do not define her, that they forgot to define her as a character. Seriously, we do not know what she fights for besides "she's good and wants to do the right thing". So yeah, as a protagonist, she is bland. People use Anakin and Luke as argument. Anakin was literally space jesus, and he had abilities, but not only did he train for years: he also lost. He lost multiple times, including to Obi Wan at the end of RoTS. Luke in the first movie didn't know how to use the force, and that's why he spends the next movie (5 years after the first one takes place, mind you) training, and still loses. Hell, even in RoTj he loses. He was saved by someone else. Rey never had a moment she struggled. Never. And, when she was in danger, that danger was the REASON something GOOD happens (Finn decides he needs to go after her and so tells the Resistance what he knows), but even then... She saves herself with no difficulty. JJ Abrams tried to fix that in RoTS, but it was too late, and everything around it was fragile. Now, don't get me wrong. You can love her character and these movies (I personally despise most things about them besides the visuals and Finn & Poe ), all you want. This is simply a friendly discussion, ok?

The Remake is an absolute insult to the original movie, complete and utter waste. This song along shows she knew if her father went he would die...yet also knew if she was ever to be found out she would die. It was a risk she was willing to make

It was not supposed to be a remake. People always get offended by that geez, the movie was supposed to be an another adaptation of the Chinese poem, not the Disney!! Yeah I didn't like the movie as much as I thought I would when I watched the trailer, but it still was pretty good. The only references to the Disney were the song and the eagle (and I might missing others stuff)

***** too bad i heard in the original story mulan was executed after they found her out to be a female.
@GreenwayOo10 жыл бұрын
That makes it even more dramatic and courageous of her. Imagine the similar story of france. A lil lady from the countryside heard voice and fighted for the army in the name of god. That's kinda creepier than fighting to save her old father. Humans only remember what they want to. French remember the image of a girl taking the role of a man just because god told her. It's a story about girl taking power. Chinese remember the image of loving daughter, that's an image of respect for family. We see clearly the difference between two culture that has totally different values. And it's not going to be possible to make a disney about the french version, cause the value it shows are just creepy.
@OsnosisBones10 жыл бұрын
***** it isnt just fictional characters we like to remember certain aspects of, and it isnt always the good part of them we remember and forget the bad, the reverse happens too. the huns, for instance, often improved the lives of those they took over, often toppling corrupt governing systems and lowering crime rates, and actually they often didnt actually rule the nations, once they showed they beet them they left them to do as they wished. the real life dracula, or rather vlad tepes, had a similar mentality. most like to remember him as a war monger, when really he was a man sold as a slave as a youth who broke free and went to insane lengths to topple the people who took his land by force in the hopes he could once again bring freedom to his people. hell, sure his enemies feared him, but records actually say his people beloved him for his actions lowered crime and brought some of the greatest freedoms to his nations. (but media prefers to remember him and many others for negative propaganda, cuz the way their enemies monstracize them makes for a more fun story)
@GreenwayOo10 жыл бұрын
Nakumare I totally agree with everything you said, but it doesn't go against my point. Whatever we remember, bad or good, it shows somthing about our society. If Mulan is a legend today it's because she is a symbol of a girl loving her family. And if Jeane d'Arc is a legend its because she is a symbol of a girl taking power. That's two different visions of the the woman in the society.

Why do so many people keep thinking Mulan is a princess? o_0 This OST is amazing tho, I have to say this movie is beautiful and the music is stellar!
@LordofFullmetal10 жыл бұрын
She's a Disney Princess. In case you haven't noticed, the official list doesn't seem to care who is and is not an actual princess. For example; Kida, one of the only princesses by birth in the Disney universe, is not counted. Neither is Anna. Most princesses, like Belle, Cinderella and Tiana, simply marry into royalty. Mulan never even does THAT; however, the official list counts her as a princess.
@midnightnavigator10 жыл бұрын
LordofFullmetal Yes, but she's not a an princess. She's just thrown in to say 'look diversity!' because they won't make an actual Asian princess. It just bothers me because everyone else is or becomes a princess. And people think she actually IS or becomes a princess at the end of the movie (especially the second one). I dunno, just feels lazy on Disney's part. It bothers me that Kida is forgotten too, because she was very cool. I'm guessing Pochahontas takes up that 'tribal princess' spot. And she's not one of the only ones born into it, a ton of them are born into it, only a few marry into it. Pochahontas, Rupunzel, Mirda, Anna/Elsa, Snow White, Jasmine, Aurora, Ariel are all born into it and then you have Belle, Cinderella and Tiana that marry into it, so I'm not sure why you say most of them marry into it.
@smilescomeforfree585510 жыл бұрын

@midnightnavigator10 жыл бұрын
***** I wish I knew. My guess, is that the movie wasn't a huge hit. Lots of people forget or don't know it's existence. Kind of like they dismiss Princess Eilonwy from the lesser known Disney movie 'The black cauldron' It doesn't sell or appeal and they can't make money off the masses with merch. from them. It's the only reason that makes sense.

Mulan: I should never have left home. Mushu: Come on, you went to save your father’s life. Who knew you’d end up shaming him and disgracing your ancestors and losing all your friends? You know, you just gotta learn to let these things go. Mulan: Maybe I didn’t go for my father. Maybe what I really wanted was to prove I could do things right, so when I looked in the mirror, I’d see someone worthwhile. But I was wrong. I see nothing. *goes on to save China and brings honor to her family directly from the emperor himself* I think it’s safe to say she really wasn’t wrong. We do see someone worthwhile
