The Air and Naval Gunfire Liaison Company is an elite Marine Corps unit tasked with coordinating various fires for their attached ground units. Tactical aviators are often chosen to lead these elements because of their unique perspective, having themselves previously supported ground forces from the air. It can be a harrowing experience for the aviators who leave the relative safety of their aircraft to slug it out in gritty ground combat, shoulder-to-shoulder with their brethren. On the other hand, it can be an experience like no other.
On this episode, retired U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Dave “Chip” Berke joins us to describe his time leading an ANGLICO unit during the height of fighting in Ramadi, Iraq. His exploits are described in extensive depth during his appearance on episode 69 of the Jocko Podcast, which should be considered a prerequisite prior to listening to this episode where we focus on Chip’s actual tactical control of aircraft as a ground FAC.
During the listener question segment, Jell-O and guest co-host Dave “Chili” Culpepper from episode 55, address painting “CAG birds,” the difference between aggressors and adversaries, and staying mentally firm when attempting to land on a carrier during difficult situations.
Episode artwork by Janek Krause. Bumper music by Jaime Lopez / announcements by Clint Bell. This episode was produced by our friends at The MuscleCar Place Podcast Network.

Wow, interesting podcast. I was in 3d ANGLICO from 71 -77. Man, how things have changed. We didn't have all that technology. Basically a radio, map and smoke grenades to mark our position. My dad was a 3 war vet. Flew airstrikes during Korea. Was in class 30 of the USNTPS. Flew the 1st E2 out to the Kitty Hawk and was first squadron Commander during VN. He had over 600 carrier landings.

Yep, we use to have ANGLICO jump/fall from our OV10 Broncos. Bronco goes vertical and stick drops out. Back then ANGLICO had radio in ALICE pack and smoke. But do not be fooled, those boys could call 8 point grid coordinate to bring down all hell. Good times.

I was a Navy ship guy (who lost the dream of being a Navy fighter pilot due to one bad day at an eye test) who had the terrific opportunity to spend a couple of years 1987-89 in 1st ANGLICO, Camp Pendleton. This interview really conveys a lot about that experience of being the liaison fire support control guy with the ground pounders and it is great to hear so much about the updates to the systems and how it helps do the job better. Thanks for a great deep look into these units that few people ever heard of, and fewer understand. In my time we were very mystical to most of the Marines because they never saw us in the field, because we were attached to the Army or SOF or partner nation forces. I greatly appreciate this podcast taking the time to shine some light into the ANGLICO world.

Another home run, this episode was outstanding! I absolutely loved the the Comm interaction with Jello and Chip, I wasn’t expecting that and thank you for not watering the content down. I feel that this podcast is such a unique entity among all others because you manage to bring the listener into the ready room and into the cockpit, I really feel like an observer in this amazing and dynamic environment. Then you do a great job with hitting all the acronyms on the Facebook page. The amount of SA that you professionals possess is nothing short of amazing. Keep up the great work. Eric

I saved this episode for a long flight I had coming up. Admittedly I did not do my homework before the episode, but wow I am still blown away by Chip's amazing military career. As Sunshine would say he is a "Great American." If there's ever a chance to bring him back, please do so. He offered a unique perspective to the air support discussion.

Interesting that they needed FAC's to control close air support. Everyone was qualified in Recon Battalion to call-in their own air strikes. We would normally call-in ANGLICO only if we needed a target lasered or for controlling Naval Gunfire Support for marking targets for close air missions (even though I went Artillery Gunfire Spotter school and Naval Gunfire Support at Coranado Island). Unfortunately, you might need to give your grid coordinates or lat/long if your position is being overrun. Sometimes, you were danger close and needed Artillery on your position.

In the 80’s we had the MULE, a clunky laser that we used to illuminate or lase the target for laser guided bombs and laser guided artillery rounds. That was high tech back then. OT factor was main way to correct supporting arms though.

Wow, thank you! Fortunately Chip is a fast talker and got so much information into that podcast! Fantastic job gentlemen! I heard it once that kinetics (a.k.a., ordinance) was delivered as close as 2,000 feet to the ANGLICO. From the book Master's Of The Air, it talked about a mission where the 8th USAAF was dropping ordinance where Allies were this side of the road and Axix were on that side. Being wrong would have made for a really bad day. Fortunately there are some wonderful men out there that can hold their heads high.
