The Moroccan national team starred in that tournament and led the group and was a strong supporter of his German counterpart in the second round but lost 1-0 to the Germans and went head up.

He had a good tournament, but Zaki wasn't awarded the best goalkeeper of the tournament, certainly not by FIFA at least. They didn't have such an award until 1994, and the goalkeeper for the all-star team (which I think was picked by the press association) was Jean-Marie Pfaff of Belgium.

England had three captains within three minutes in the match. Bryan Robson had to be substituted in the 42nd minute by Steve Hodge due to a shoulder injury. Robson gave his captain’s armband to Ray Wilkins. Wilkins was sent off after he threw the ball at the referee over a disagreement over a decision. Peter Shilton then took over as skipper for the remainder of this game, and England's remaining games in the tournament.

Group F table after this match in Monterrey: Portugal - games played 1 - won 1,drawn 0,lost 0 - goals for 1,against 0 - points 2 Morocco - played 2 - won 0,drawn 2,lost 0 - for 0,against 0 - points 2 Poland - played 1 - won 0,drawn 1,lost 0 - for 0,against 0 - points 1 England - played 2 - won 0,drawn 1,lost 1 - for 0,against 1 - ponts 1 England deep in the guano,and three games so far produced only one goal! While Group E featuring West Germany,Uruguay,Denmark and Scotland was called the "Group of Death" (the first time I heard that term used),Mexicans had by this point taken to dubbing Group F the "Group of Sleep" because of the lack of goals - and much in the way of competence so far!

I recall staying up very late and yawning through school the next day after watching this, what a dull game, but I love World Cup 86, my first and favourite. So many great matches.
@andrewyoung16523 жыл бұрын
This was played on a Friday night 6\6\86 so you probably didn’t have school in the morning
@rjjcms12 жыл бұрын
@@andrewyoung1652 That is correct. Perhaps it was England's 1-0 defeat by Portugal three nights previously and similarly late,that the OP was thinking of. Being Friday night I almost certainly got back from the pub in time to watch the whole of the match against Morocco. I know I didn't miss a minute of any of England's games at Mexico 86. All three of England's Group F games from Monterrey were played well past midnight. I know the cumulative effect of those late stay-ups left me somewhat knackered the following week,what with having to get up to go to work in the office in the morning Monday to Friday and whatever else was going on. I was wide awake during those England games but it finally caught up with when,having got home from work,I fell asleep in front of the infamous Scotland v Uruguay match even though that was a late afternoon kick-off. Fortunately,England's games in the knockout phase were on at a more reasonable hour!
@rjjcms12 жыл бұрын
I made one mistake here - I've checked and found that the Scotland v Uruguay game kicked off at 7 pm. My work hours didn't extend past about 4 or 4.30 pm at the time,and with it being warm and sunny it really felt like a late afternoon start to me. Flaming June and all that. But I couldn't keep my eyes open for long,and soon crashed out on the living room sofa. Long enough to take in that red card in the first 2 minutes,though! My parents had gone away for the week,leaving me to look after the house and the cats - they were back the next day.

There was arrogance and sense of superiority throughout the game. They couldn't stomach an African/Arab country giving them the stick. I remember an interview by Faria after returning home where he recount how the English never went to shake hands before or after the game.

My second and the best world cup. I was disappointed how bad England started and couldn’t watch Hateley. Beardsley made so much difference later on.
@kailashpatel17064 жыл бұрын
why did Robson take so long to find a settled team? there were problems with a settled team going into Mexico despite a very good victory against the Soviet Union in March '86' where it was clear that Lineker and Beardsley worked up front but what was Fenwick and Hateley doing in the national team,? it should have been Hoddle in the middle with Waddle on the right and Beardsley in support and Lineker up top..but Wilkins and Hoddle never worked well together unless he was in the middle...I think Mark Wright was also injured pre tourmanent but Alvin Martin should have got the nod ahead of Fenwick...Its sad Bobby never experimented with a 4-2-3-1 system at this stage...but Bryan Robson was injured...so it was never straight forward...

Brought his inspirational form for Everton,that was an essential part in turning them into title contenders in 1985,1986 and 1987 when they were champions twice and runners-up once. Vital that he did for England in such circumstances. Trevor Steven had been a revelation for the Toffees,too,supplying the strikers and helping give them the attacking edge they hitherto lacked to go with their strength in defence and midfield.
@kailashpatel170611 ай бұрын
@@rjjcms1 I think alot of people think that England stumbled on the right team, in fact the two pre tourney friendlies against Soviet Union and Scotland in March/April 1986 made it clear that Lineker and Beardsley up front, Hateley on the bench) a flat high back four, Hoddle in the middle supported by Reid with Hodge and Steven on the flanks (Waddle at best should have been on the right if not for Steven but subs bench really)..Come the first match Bobby bottled it and felt the need to play Waddle, Robson and Wilkins together with Hod out of position..and played a defence line with the full backs pitched far too high up the pitch...
@rjjcms110 ай бұрын
@@kailashpatel1706 The Lineker-Beardsley strike combination was inspirational in this World Cup. Where I think England did have to discover a Plan B was in midfield,where it was expected and anticipated that Bryan Robson - who'd gained international renown for his exploits at the 1982 World Cup in Spain - would be at the heart of things until his tournament was ended early by injury (as happened again four years late at Italia 1990). Robson was always going to be pretty much the first name going on the teamsheet. Perhaps England did go back to the familiar with the inclusion of Ray Wilkins alongside him,unti he was suspended for that red card. Hoddle should have got many more games,and yes in the right position,than he did. It was a waste of his talent that he didn't.

First African team to get past the group stage - after Algeria were unforgivably stitched up in 1982. It'd been coming,because also Cameroon made those who joked at their expense before seeing them play eat their words by embarrassing eventual winners Italy and semi-finalists Poland in drawn matches at the group stage in 1982. It showed the strides forward African football had been making.

Glen hoddle was a great player for spurs but never had any kind of impact for England. Mark Hatley is probably the most useless forward england ever had, thank god Beardsley was brought in for the next game. Was this ray Wilkins last England appearance?
@kailashpatel17064 жыл бұрын
why did it take England so long to get started in the tournament..?the two matches against Portugal and Morocco?
@rjjcms12 жыл бұрын
Everything went wrong in those two matches for England for a start,especially Bryan Robson's injury. They didn't play terribly well but nevertheless were mugged by Portugal. I would dispute Glenn Hoddle not having an impact for England. I think he was never given a consistent run in the team and discarded far too hastily. He came within a coat of paint of scoring with one of his free kick specials against one of the finalists in one of England's ill-fated group games at the 1988 Euro Championship. Likewise,a decade later Matt Le Tissier was never given a proper chance,written off after one game - seemingly because the London press wanted to punish him for refusing to move to one of the capital's big clubs.
