I have not made any HRT's yet so am watching videos. Thank you SOOOO much for screwing up one and starting with that. Rarely does anyone show you a mistake and figure out what they did wrong then go back and show you where they went wrong and how to make sure they don't do it again. It actually makes me more aware of what I'm doing when it's my turn to make it. Great job. Poor Lucy got blamed. My great dane always lays down in front of the ironing board and I have to straddle him. The lab wants to be under my sewing machine while I'm sewing.

Yes, Lucy is always under foot but she's so special! Thank you for the feedback about showing mistakes. They say we learn from our mistakes so when I make any while sewing a block, I like to share it so viewers can avoid it. Thanks for watching.

Thank you Carol for all the tutorials you do. Here’s a tip I would like to share - I use a water pen (Carolina Moore) or Aqua Eraser (Sewline) to release the glue when pressing seams open.

Oh my! I have never heard of a water pen. Who would have thought. I might need to try that out. Thanks so much for sharing that and thanks for watching.

Half rectangle triangles have been the bane of my quilting experience, until this wonderful tutorial. My cutting and piecing are acceptable but I was not trimming 5hem correctly. Thank you so much for this clear, concise instruction for proper trimming!

Thanks Carol. I have made the same mistake when trimming these units, I bought a specialty ruler, because I simply could not SEE the 1/4" corner. Then a few months back when you mentioned using Marti Mitchel's corner trimmer., I pulled it out and ya know what happened next. Yep I found that I could mark away that needed trim line. Oh well, some times we don't realize what 'other' specialty rulers and templates can do until someone else brings a technique to the table. Thanks for the great way you showed us how to use the rulers we already have. Only in the past 4-5 years have I spent $$ on new rulers, and mainly because my rulers simply needed to be replaced. Like you I started in1993 with a basic 6.5" x 24" and a few squares. At 73 my eyes aren't what they were 30 years ago. Plus I do love the new gadgets.. lol

Well OMG! I am going to use the Marti Michell ruler for that as well! I didn't even think of that. Some of my mistakes were because I used the little like right next to the 14". Thank you, thank you for sharing that great tip!

Thanks again for screwing up the block but it took you a while to figure it out. And if you had made a whole quilt the same way, most not quilting people either wouldn’t notice or just think it was the design. I haven’t tried these yet might wait to buy the rulers

excellent tutorial! I know templates/rulers can be expensive but the Deb Tucker tri recs ruler is great for HRT's -- took a minute for me to get the hang of using it but now it's my favorite hands down for HRT -- I have the other rulers you mentioned also and thankfully I can use them with other blocks! Thanks for all you do --- you're an excellent teacher!

I have DT's Split Recs and the Tri Recs. I prefer DT's for this application as it has a perfect trim down. Good rulers make our quilting more enjoyable as they save time and money.

Carol, you are good to show a plain ruler. It also demonstrates why an MVP ruler for the block one is undertaking is an investment not a cost. With the right ruler, (particularly if you are making hundreds of these), you will save time and fabric over the adaptive techniques needed for other rulers.
@CarolThelen

I agree. For many of these blocks, if I were making an entire quilt from them I would use other methods. In my quilting journey I have run across countless quilters who can barely afford fabric. My goal with these videos is success for everyone, so I try to teach the very basic methods using basic tools. Thanks for watching and I always appreciate your comments!

Pretty block. I watched the one where you describe the error and had not noticed it but did wonder if the block would be as pretty with prints instead of your selected fabrics that showed as solid. This one gave me the answer. ❤

I'm just curious why they are called "half rectangle triangles? Aren't they just half rectangles?
@CarolThelen
@CarolThelen Жыл бұрын
I think it refers to the shape of the triangle. Cut a rectangle along the diagonal and you get a right triangle with unequal sides. Cut a square in half and you get a right triangle with equal sides. That's my guess! Thanks for watching.
Two methods to sew and trim half rectangle triangles.
