For a long time I had adopted this odd hand position, right hand on top of wheel and left somewhere near the bottom, whilst caressing my knee. I never thought I'd get back to '10 to 2', and push/pull, but I have. I'm astounded at the control it gives me. Now Reg, here's one I seen the other day - two mobile phones in hands and a Mcdrink.

Thanks Reg, I went for a drive last night after watching this video, after watching it i thought i was a shuffler but in reality i think i always choose push pull and at the 10 to 2 position. When steering minor bends i still use this but it appears that one hand pulls the wheel down and the other is just kind of floating as there isnt enough movement in the wheel to start progressing the hand downward, it just floats up again meaning one hand effectively does the steering, it was how i was taught when i did My IAM but i have never really liked it. In this scenario i think now i might consider looking at fixed input (which i tried a bit last night).

That's a nice bmw, you even added turn signals to it, what aftermarket brand did you use?

Andre Salgado Hi Andre, my favoured choice is Professor Jacob Z Papaspook's Anti-Knob-O-Matic Trafficator system. It surprises a few people when they see the semaphore flags popping out of the wheel hubs, but seems to work fine.

Jokes aside BMW's have horrible indicator stalks since they work more like a push button that returns to the middle when you actuate it

Steering is the only procedure of roadcraft which I don´t follow as advised. Instead I use this technique: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3WboK2YfrWqY8U. (adaption of the fixed grip) Pull-push has the major disadvantage that people tend to forget what the relation of steering wheel and the actual wheels is. Also having two ways to steer a car creates a procedural inaccuracy. This is dangerous in emergency situations where people tend to just steer and forget what they are actually doing. Steering with pull push will also not get you through the German driving test, because it is deemed unsafe (inputs are too slow and it is difficult to add steering lock progressively quickly). I enjoy watching your videos, keep the good stuff up.

For tight turns I seem to do a weird combination of pull push and rotational. I bring my hand to the top as if I'm going to do pull push and then I grip the bottom with the other hand and fix my grip throughout the turn. It just feels natural to me. Is there anything wrong with this?

I do the same -- essentially 12 and 6, and rotate throughout with the hands in the same position. Is this what you mean?

Great video again Reg. What about steering if you're unfortunate enough to get into a skid? I've done some skin pan practice and can't turn the wheel quickly enough with pull-push or rotational steering. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Bill, in a situation where the car is skidding & you need to apply some corrective lock, all the niceties of steering technique go out of the window & you should use whatever technique you prefer to apply the required amount of steering lock as quickly as possible.

Hi Reg, I have 25 years service the last 16 on RPU, advanced car with TPAC and advanced bike with VIP escort. I'm just about to embark on my new challenge as a police driver trainer!I am loving your videos and have found them a great way to refresh my skills and learn new techniques for training. But I have held my tounge about your steering until I have got to this video. What is going on with your thumbs? Not sure about hooking them over, they should always be pointing up!I don't think I have ever been tought 'Rotational Steering.' Could this be a regional thing?I also want to question your advice for moving your hand up prior to the pull technique. On those series of corners you could have pulled from the 10-2 position. Its only when the corner is tight, such as the right turn onto the main road, that the leading hand should go to 12 o'clock. I also think that your hands should meet at the 6 o'clock position to prevent the shuffling that you demonstrated.Using both types of steering looks messy to me and has the appearance of someone who is not sure which steering technique to use. Please don't take offence, as every day is a school day and I'm looking forward to the rest of your videos.
