Tuned In Podcast 083: Is Tuning on the Street Actually Better Than the Dyno?
What’s the best bang-for-buck calibration platform for a late-model GM vehicle? Is there anything you can’t do on a good reflashing platform? And just how hard is it to make money in the automotive KZbin space? Jeremy Formato of ‪@Fasterproms1‬ joins us this week to answer these questions and many more.

Many will know Jeremy from his popular KZbin channel and tuning business, Fasterproms. Those that have watched, will know that this is a guy who has been in the tuning game for many years, growing up with a father that was a pioneer in the aftermarket fuel injection tuning space.
In this episode, we discuss Jeremy’s start in the game as he learned the ropes from his father and his father’s colleagues before taking over the business nearly straight out of high school. Like anyone who has been doing this for a while, Jeremy’s got some great anecdotes from the early days, which are always a good reminder of just how good we’ve got it now.
We next dive deep into the world of reflashing GM vehicles - by far the most cost-effective way of modifying the calibration of these potential-filled machines. The amount of power that we’ve now got when it comes to reflashing these vehicles is astonishing - there’s really not a lot we can’t do. There are of course cons to go with all the pros, so Jeremy and Andre break these down and discuss at what point someone should consider moving to an aftermarket standalone ECU.
Next, we spend some time talking about the different ways we can approach tuning - everyone associates tuning with a dyno, but with the prevalence of street tuning, as well as the increasing popularity of e-tuning, it’s not the only way to get it done.
This conversation also spends a little time discussing KZbin, and Jeremy is open about exactly why he reduced his video output dramatically over the last year.

Just note, there are about 10 topics in the episode that could have just as easily been the headliners, but we can only pick one! Great chat and worth a listen to the whole thing 😎 - Taz

Post the details along with any relevant logs on the forum and fire a link to the thread through to support@hpacademy.com I don't quite understand what you're trying to say but tuning correctly does take time and if it could all be done for us by software, then we wouldn't need to tune. I don't think that is quite what you meant though, but the courses do discuss interpolation where applicable so I'm really unsure here sorry. The members forum is the place where we offer technical support form you though 😎 - Taz www.hpacademy.com

Having worked as a design engineer for car manufacturers, I know the dynos they use cost a few million dollars. They are able to recreate road resistance, independently measure and adjust roller settings on all four wheels etc.. and are also perfectly calibrated. so I have always wondered if the dynos at tuning shops which only cost 250k are actually giving you good and "safe" dyno runs. I know a lot of people who have no issues on the road but then go bang on the dyno 🤷‍♂️

Sad part is the more technical it gets the smaller the audience. Because alot of so called car people only want to look cool don't care about racing. They want to see a big dyno number not the fast car. I'm the nerd that wants to see how and why the car can make the power and run the number.

That’s the current generation of car people… wanting attention and views instead of knowledge and understanding.

There is just never going to be a LOT of people that are interested to THIS level of depth, this isn't a gearhead world thing, this is an ANY hobby kind of thing. One of my other interests is building custom PCs - there's a whole lot of PC gamers who have built their own PCs, but most don't have a deep knowledge of problem solving in Windows or in a home network. At the end of the day, they're just gamers; and a whole lot more gearheads are into racing than are into the material science that goes into aluminum connecting rods or the ins & outs of flashing GM ECUs(if you're the type that's never going to own an LS because you like having stuff that's different, that specific knowledge just isn't very relevant to you). Doesn't make you less of a "car person"(don't know why anyone would care about such a label anyway though; just do whatever the hell you're interested in plain and simple). I'll say this much, there's more people interested to this level than ever before in history - because the information just wasn't exactly very accessible or available before

There are some great content creators out there, you sometimes just have to dig past the generic popular stuff that gets put in your feed first. Jeremy here for example, although he hasn't been super active for a while, is worth checking out. If you are new to his channel there really is some solid stuff on there when it comes to technical content with him often being on the dyno running you through it. If it helps, know that while we wouldn't kick 1 million views on every video out of bed, that isn't what is most important to Ben, Andre or the rest of the crew here when it comes to content 😎 - Taz.

@@hpa101 not only a gearhead, but a diplomat with diplomatic responses for both sides;) I do agree that it’s tough to find genuine engineers, or just gearheads, who not only dive into theory, but real world applications and you guys rock for this!👍 So much misinformation out there and it’s just nice to learn from a trusted source, so thanks again!

Had a PAIGGY BACK emanage blue on my r33 gts25t with basically a steel wheel turbo, factory injectors and a super basic exhaust. It was no powerhouse making a massive 230rwkw but i used to get 100-120km for 10L or so of fuel. Didnt matter how hard i drove it did about 130k kms once it was tuned before the bores where worn out.. so it got some pistons n rods more of a aftermarket ecu ect but it was best on the emanage overall

Mr. Andre.. We live in a dumbed-down society, where tik-tok has shortened the attention span of an average citizen, to of a gold fish. You provide a very niche content and none of that will remotely ever compete with a 10 sec vid of a cat. We are a small group, that enjoys and appreciates your content, the effort and the time. Most importanly .. if you enjoy making the videos, its all that really matters. Thank you.. and please dont stop. We are out there.

you should talk to someone who knows the Saab trionic ecu....some very interesting stuff like ionic knock sensing and the trionic tuning suite....all free and opened up by dedicated group of people. some people getting good power on stock internals. so even the engines are pretty decent. 600hp on mid 90's cars. Its worth a look anyway.

It makes me sad to see so much content on the same handful of platforms. LS/K swap is so boring anymore. Same goes for HP Tuners, Motec/Haltech et Al. Be brave. Tune an early 2000s Toyota shitbox with an automatic 🤣🤣🤣

I think motec and syvex are really cool. My understanding is you can make a ton of power and when setup correctly you can do it safely. The motec We had a 1.5L jetski with apr head studs, valves, springs, and injectors running insane power and it ran for 350 before I blew it up messing with making the fuel pressure compensate for boost with auto tune. I think it actually lost signal lol. Totally my fault. Between my friend and I we had several ecu's on the ski over the years, the motec impressed me. We put a knock sensor on every cylinder and ran this motor on the razor edge of what it could hold. For a long time. Most skis don't see more than 100 hours or so, this one sent the factory internals to mars after 350 hours most of which were wide open making way more power than they were designed for. Came with 260hp, the had it around 450hp and it loved it
