RECORDED FROM TITANIC EXPEDITION 2024!
This week's witness is Dr. David Gallo, renown Oceanographer, Co-Leader of the 2024 Titanic Expedition, and accomplished lecturer on the world's oceans, climate change, and deep sea exploration. This episode was recorded onboard the research vessel of Expedition 2024 just hours before arrival above the Titanic wreck site.
Welcome to WITNESS TITANIC, a podcast where we interview witnesses of the infamous Titanic disaster including modern experts, enthusiasts, and even the survivors of the sinking. Like the century-old inquiries that came before us, we may never fully determine what really happened on that cold April night but you may be surprised to find how close our efforts will bring us to Titanic herself...

As always, thank you James for these fine forensic analysis episodes....which gives me a feeling that you're up to something big shortly. Kind of like the intermission before the main event. We all appreciate what you're doing 😎

Regarding artifacts, retrieval and "grave robbing" - we clean up disaster sites on land all the time. No one thought "we must leave the Twin Tower debris on the ground in NYC" or "mustn't touch the Murrah Building debris." The Twin Tower site, as well as the 9/11 site in Pennsylvania also included human remains that were not identifiable and yet they were "cleaned up." Those were grave sites. So, to me, the idea of bringing up as much as can be safely (and, yes, respectfully) brought to the surface for exhibition is important and significant. There was a traveling Titanic exhibit that came through Salem, Oregon many years ago. The first thing we saw was a porthole - and I burst into tears. The other artifacts pulled at my heart but not even personal items had that initial impact. Until the very end. There was a bag and its contents in a display case. (I can't remember the owner's name now.) I lingered, looking closely at the items when "Captain Smith" said something to me about it. I responded with a relatively intelligent, knowledgeable bit of information about the man and the bag. "Captain Smith" said, "Ah, you're a student of the Titanic." That startled me so much that I smiled and said, "Well, yes, I guess I am." I later told my husband that, as far as I could remember, it was the first time I had ever been accused of being much of a student of anything. And, yes, that one comment is still one of the highlights of my life.
