Abe no Seimei Shrine in Osaka is dedicated to Abe no Seimei, a popular onmyoji (yin yang diviner) during his time. It is also believed to be his birthplace. The son of a powerful family, legend has it that Abe no Seimei was born of a union between his father Abe no Yasuna and Kuzu-no-Ha, a kitsune white fox spirit.
The shrine was established in the year 1007, two years after Seimei’s death. The shrine reached the pinnacle of its popularity in the Edo period when a stone monument was built on the grounds to indicate the birthplace of Seimei, and the ruins of the well where he was said to have taken his first bath were marked. However, that popularity declined after the 19th century’s Meiji Restoration.
In 1921, the shrine experienced a revival after being named a subordinate shrine to Abe Oji Shrine, located 50 meters to the South. The current shrine building was rebuilt in 1925. The fortune telling area, which changes daily, is very popular.
