On September 14, 2023, a Nelson Concrete truck loaded with 10 yards of concrete drove over a bridge clearly marked with a 4-ton load limit sign. The bridge collapsed. The driver was not injured but the residents of Walnut Cove in Willis, Texas now have to drive over a mile to get to the other side of the bridge. Miller Wrecker Service and Gabby's Crane Service spent 3 hours recovering the truck from the creek bed which flows into Lake Conroe. That was after many hours of setting mats to support the 90-ton crane and the heavy-duty wrecker. This video shows the incident and the complete uncut recovery of the truck. A note as many residents watched you may hear nasty comments.

Having owned a big wrecker years ago I understand how difficult it was to lift the concrete truck out of the creek . I retired from Union Pacific Railroad and worked a lot of derailments and watching Hulcher Emergency D9 side winders and dozer clear rail cars , cargo and over 200 ton Locomotives out of the way and rerail a lot that could be set back on the rails is a lot of dangerous work . Cables and chains breaking , places where they were hooked ripping out and crap flying every which way . I've seen the side winders carry locomotives up some pretty steep dumps or what most people call slopes and set the locomotives on the rails to be moved to locations to be repaired or cut up and scrapped . I knew this video was going to be a great one and it surely was great . Thanks for posting . Should be against the law in Texas for BLIND concrete truck driver that can't see a 4-ton maximum load sign on a wooden bridge . Exciting day for the town folks .

At least someone here gets it. So many 'arm chair experts' in this comments section it's unreal. You're not always lifting from the best point because you can't always get to it without putting someone in a dangerous position to start with. There's no procedure book for stuff like this, has to be taken step at a time, very slowly.

This is a fine example why reading and math are so important in a child's education. The sad part is this mixer truck was less than 30-days old as it still has its temporary paper tag in the windshield. That wooden bridge on Maywood Street was not a main thoroughfare and was only a shortcut. Now is the time to construct a proper concrete bridge. While the driver of the truck holds ultimate responsibility for proceeding across a weak structure, there is plenty of blame to go around from the concrete contractor who apparently failed to inform the ready-mix company of the deficient bridge structure, to the dispatcher themselves who should've known the area who failed to inform their driver of a proper routing to the construction site. The shortest route between two points is not always the best route.

The trouble that driver and company are facing now is not going to be cheap ! The front axle is the weight limit for that bridge! Now add the truck and cement load. For those who don't know 4 tons is 8000 pounds . The driver is what is called a steering wheel holder because no brains up stairs behind the eyes. Notice the speed bumps on the bridge so people have to slow down when crossing every time. Prison time for the driver if his load of cement is lost in the creek.

not that long ago, we had several of these older wooden bridges in town and at some point, the DOT no longer recognized wood as structurally solid. Yeah, old fashion 12x12 timber frame (6 timbers wide) put up by the RR 100 years ago was looked at by a bunch of (wet behind the ears) young engineers and all off a sudden the "never before rated" bridges that were fine for tractor trailers and fire trucks were no longer fit to drive a school bus over.... even empty. (under 20k pounds) Of course these were short and made to handle most anything, with a double deck of 3" plank including "tread planks" where the tires went.... but derated to 8k pounds like this one. Again, engineered by the RR guys.... not built of 2x12s like this one. BTW, 2 weeks after the new signs went up, I forgot and accidentally drove a 65k pound fire truck over one (oops) ... it didn't budge.

Obviously not an easy recovery and I do not know the strength of the banks/approaches but, there seemed to be so many Indians and no Chief. No overall cohesive plan from start to finish before they started. River left full of concrete and diesel fuel is never a good result. Better to step back and assess the whole job and formulate a plan from start to finish first. Up down, up down recovery is not the answer but does show you are only guessing.. Better to consult the military as they have experience and practice for clearing "blown" river crossings. The literature on best practise is freely available and they developed some under unfriendly fire, since WW2. The poor old bridge is toast. Best clear all parts fouling the vehicle first to get a clean bite. Use the known formulas to assess the needed lift and pull together with the space necessary to complete removal. Create ramps or use "gun planks" to slide it out more effectively. Sealing the full fuel tank to avoid spillage would take less effort than picking up the dead fish, let alone the ecological damage. Guess it is the difference between American "brute force is always best and fastest" and those of us that need to use less powerful machines with lower gearing and more patience and confidence in experience and skill to achieve a better result for less damage overall but, a bit slower, maybe. Did enjoy the repeated dunkin' though...guess they thought it was a concrete donut. Feel free to attack in replies but, you should know I speak from experience. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt rubbish. I also learned from British REME and American recovery manuals stretching back more then 80 years now. Not ALL American recovery is or, "get you home" expedients are rubbish. I did access this with an open mind hoping to learn something but, I was sadly disappointed.

No doubt this was 100% driver ignorance and his fault, saying that this was a private lane going to a housing community, if you google this it says the housing association is civil suing. So obviously there has been concrete trucks back there multi times, seems between the contractor who called the order in and the dispatch they would have relayed there had to be a alternated route, the gps is going to take you the fastest way which probably is over this bridge so possibly this company had been there before and nobody told driver of alternated route and he knew the company been there so he assumed they crossed it. Which is ignorant but not all his fault if that is case. Dispatch gets to be lazy and lots of times doesn't relay these things. Just saying

Not very impressed with the Wrecker or crane service, seems like they were a little out of their league!! Doesn't look like the chain used to lift the truck up was rated for 40 ton , and the connections were not done well either, the first one snapped off, and the second one was hooked up to the barrel's open end which is not meant to support the weight of the truck, no wonder the whole thing "dropped" off the chain. This is a serious Safety hazzard and they could probably be written up by OSHA. Sure these types of jobs are all different and none are easy, but you must keep safety first and use the proper rated equipment and connections at all times. Very Lucky no one got hurt here.
