When you do a dir while inside of S:, what does it say on the first line. That would say Volume in drive S is ______. That may be what you need or you may need all caps. Let me know.

It’s not critical. Right before that, when you did the dir, it should say the volume label. Also, before doing the format, make sure you picked the right drive and that none of your data is on that one. That one should only be for booting.

That erases the part of your computer that has your boot info. It is not your data. The goal is to understand that your hard drive has multiple parts or partitions. One has the data and the others help it boot. When in doubt, ask someone technical for help. If you are in the proper location and type in dir, that will show you what is on that drive. If you happened to pick the wrong one, you may delete your data so make sure to be careful. If you follow my video exactly, you lose no data. The whole video shows you that. If you make a mistake and erase the wrong partition, then you could lose your data. Always backup your info.

Just to clarify, do you have multiple hard drives in your computer or just one? My worry is that if you have 2 hard drives or more, you are in the wrong one.

It is very odd to only see one partition. You may have an older pc with mbr boot. Try these commands in a command line. Do not do any commands that erase anything. This will scan your disk to see if it can be repaired if it has bad sectors. It could be also failing: chkdsk c: /R You can run that chkdsk command multiple times to make sure it sees no issues. You can also run these: bootrec /scanos bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot bootrec /rebuildbcd This will also attempt to repair windows if those fail: sfc /scannow

You have to be careful since you can easily lose your data if you don’t have it backed up. You would have to use the dvd or usb so you can have access to the files. Also, the format command is only for a portion of the disk that does not run windows but for the part that tells the computer how to find where windows is. If you format the wrong part, you will erase your whole computer so be very careful.

If it’s not free then it may be another drive with data or it mapped per your commands. You could just pick another letter. Or, if you reboot and start the process over, you should be able to get over that part. Before doing anything, you can see what is on the drive by something like this (use the letter you used): S: dir (Use enter after each line).

I’m glad I could help! As far as prevention, this actual error and corruption on the system partition can come from multiple things. It could be caused by a virus or it could come from a possible dirty shutdown or something corrupting the data on the system partition. Because of this, one option is to use a strong antivirus, anti-malware, or EDR system. Other than that, it’s best to have a backup but as you know, the backup would just put the files back. My video shows you how to rebuild the files on system even if you don’t have a backup of the system partition. In general, it’s best to have a backup that can backup all partitions of a pc and also have solid software to prevent viruses taking over. Also, if possible a ups battery can help prevent dirty power shutdowns. Lastly, having the main user of the pc not be an admin of the pc is also best. This would mean that if the user is a regular user, they won’t be able to install bad viruses or root kits/bootkits that can attack the system partition. Obviously that will require managing two accounts but could be worth it.

Well, it may not be best. The goal would be to fix it with Windows 7 media and follow the steps (maybe). The boot method may not be uefi for windows 7. It could be mbr. If you have your data backed up, you can just format the computer and try windows 10. But if you need your data, then I don’t know if you should just go to 10 and install it. Your pc may also not be able to run Win 10. What model is it.

@@glenndalezuniga3235 Do you need any data off the pc? That machine seems very old. It may be time to look into a replacement. Best thing to do is to look to see if you have windows 7 media. If not, you can check for it from Acer. If not, you may be stuck. If you have no data on the pc and you are ok with erasing it, then you can maybe try Windows 10 on it.

You may want to try normal startup repair. After you did the whole process do you get the exact same 0x0000098 error code? It shouldn’t if it was initially repaired. It is also possible that the disk is going bad. You can also boot to Windows with a cd or usb stick and run a chkdsk or scan the system with an sfc /scannow.

@techextranet Legend for still responding! It seems to come up with 0xc000001 initially, failing to turn off or reboot multible times. And after a few rebOots and getting into windows it crashes and goes back to 0x0000098. I will try what you said and see. I started suspecting the drive too. 3+ years M.2 that I was also playing games on so maybe?

This seems to be an app error. Does windows freeze after that or what do you get after that error shows up? If you can, you may also want to scan for viruses. Did you specifically do anything right before your machine started crashing? New app install or new hardware or any odd pop-ups from a virus?

@techextranet to be honest I was in the middle of installing MSI afterburner and it had me restart, I pressed restart anyways and may have had a system file opened while I did that given I was tinkering earlier. I assume that is where the issue started given I bluescreened during that restart. Also no, that popup comes up instantly and usually what crashes the pc is searching through files like sfc /scannow. Or randomly right after login. Now I'm just trying to get to a state where I can clean install windows. I got all my files out on a longer boot session.

@@shockwave994 installing windows would not delete your files. Look at the c drive. You may have old user directory or a windows.old directory. Did you specifically tell the installation to erase your whole hard drive?

The drive you format is very small. So it should be fast. You could be deleting the wrong partition or your disk may be failing.
