I wonder if you could use this as a flavour base by adding a couple of handfuls of steamed/boiled veggies to bulk it out and to reduce the impact of the salt on the flavour?
@devonsteve2347 Жыл бұрын
As you say, Potatoes will absorb some of the excess salt, ive had to do the same a couple of times during my career :)
@luvuforeverjames Жыл бұрын
You would have to add the potato raw for it to absorb excess salt, but it also absorbs some of the liquid....you should take it out 15 to 20 minutes after adding. They do indeed work to remove over salted dishes, mainly soups and stews. My mum did this on a couple of occasions when I was a child when she accidentally tipped too much salt into the stew. She did throw away the potato afterwards of course.
@devonsteve2347 Жыл бұрын
@@AntonGully tell you what gobby! oversalt a curry, then drop in several raw potatoes and then taste it after a pair of hours, I forgot that your supposed to remove the potatoes, remember that we are trying to write what happens without any visual aids, as for the potatoes not absorbing salt, then when you boil potatoes in water how come they can taste salty if they dont absorb salt. Salt isnt flavour, it is a flavour enhancer. Please read @luvuforeverjames comments, summed up brilliantly. Your welcome!

10-20 grams is way Too much salt. Yes, you do need some, but that doesn't mean you can have as much as you want. Eat 20 grams of salt a day and you Will have a condition. FWIW, the amount of sodium chloride in tap water is minimal unless you have a salt-based water softener.

I always thought that putting a whole potato in a dish that’s too salty, I wouldn’t have thought of lemon or lime juice! Anyway I’d like to try that, I love curry, not too hot, Madras is a bit too much for me, but the flavour of a good curry is something else! My dad, who passed many moons ago, had an Indian friend who’d often make a curry for us, I don’t remember how old I was , it was in the fifties so I wasn’t older than 8 (we moved from Glasgow to the Wirral on Merseyside when I was 8) I loved his curries, when we moved my dad started cooking, including curries…mmmmmm he was a good cook. A traditional Biryani is layers of vegetables and sauce with layers of rice, so a microwave version generally comes with meat/veggies and rice in one pack and the sauce in another. Apparently it's a meal served on special occasions such as wedding or birthdays and Basmati rice is aged 10 years before being thrown in the pot. It makes the rice very chewy and very, very nice.

@@BaldFoodieGuy if the stuff is in the sealed pouches the liquid in the food would stay in the food so the salt would be less concentrated as a result. Obviously if the pouches are opened and poured in a pan, and heated, the liquid will just evaporate and you end up with a strong salt flavor. Also worth bearing in mind that although those pouches are labeled for sale in the UK, they will be being sold all over India as well (in different packaging obviously) but as India is massively hotter than the UK the salt intake in India has to be a lot higher to cope with the loss of salt in sweat, so the average Indian's tolerance for salt will be a lot higher than the average Brit, combined with a greater intake of water.

A big dollop of unsweetened plain yoghurt, dusted with cumin (optional), coriander leaves, tiny sliced green chillies & 10 chapatis & I'd wolf that right down. There a few of these sauces appearing now, Home Bargains sells them at 99p and they are very good and the ingredients are free from all the nasties out there. They are just sauces though so all you really need to do is cook some veggies or a protein such as Chicken, a bit of rice and you have a dinner for two maybe three people. I make Indian food from scratch so I appreciate the use of spices in the sauces and they really are surprisingly good for the price, I get them now and again when I am in lazy mode. Hello again, Gareth, Salt is used in cooking as a flavour enhancer, it is a natural product, unlike the chemically produced MSG (Mono Sodium Glutamate) which is used as a flavour enhancer in Chinese cooking. Salt is an essential nutrient in our bodies for good health and well being, just remember not to have more that 6 grams of salt per day.
