Delta operates one of the largest active fleets of aircraft and is a significant player not just in the global aviation industry but acts as one of the big three within the United States, as such it has an important responsibility to provide customers with adequate means of transportation, especially in the forms of the latest technology and cabin product. In 2023, what aircraft does the airline operate, what's in storage and what types are beginning to age more than others?

I flew on some of those 717-200s when they were AirTran planes. I liked them. Then Southwest bought AirTran and the 717s were sold to Delta because Southwest is all 737s. I don’t think I’ve been on a Delta 717 ever, though Delta is my usual airline. Haven’t flown since 2019 though. The Delta MD-88s were my usual rides on Delta for years, flying from Florida to ATL and ATL to elsewhere.

Before Delta and Northwest merged, Delta only flew MD and Boeing aircraft Northwest only had Boeing 747s and 757s, the rest of their fleet consisted of DC 9s, and Airbus aircraft including the A330s. The 717s came to Delta via the Southwest Airlines acquisition of AirTran. Southwest didn't want the 717s so they agreed to lease them to Delta, which saw this as an opportunity to shed some regional aircraft.

Agree! The 777 is important for routes like ATL-JNB, HNL, CPT, and HND. The A350s just don’t have the range quite like the 777s do. I wish they would have just stored the 777s until it was time to lease them or perhaps lease them to a freight company and get them back when the lease is up.

Rumor mill has it that Delta 🔺 wanted to originally get a deal on their 737 max deal but due to the contract the other airlines had they couldn’t get a deal unless Boeing also cut a deal with all the other airlines that had already purchased them so apparently they might be in talks about Boeing moving the “deal” to the 787 Dreamliners instead and that would be a great replacement for their aging 767. As for the 787, Delta decided to replace the A330CEO with the NEO for fleet commonality, on top of the fact that they got an excellent deal which offsets the loss of efficiency. In addition, Delta is the only airline in the world that owns its own oil refinery so the extra fuel needed for the A330 is not an issue for them. In the long run they save buy already having equipment, maintenance know-how, and trained pilots.

I hate the a321. It's an uncomfortable plane with an emergency exit in the middle of premium seating. The NEO is actually worse than the CEO. Seats are thin on padding and poorly laid out. The overhead bins are also among the worst. Delta spent years training passengers to place rollaboards on edge, wheels first to maximize bag capacity. the A220-300 should replace the A320-200 Neo in the long run . . . should AIRBUS launch the A220-500 it'll cannibalize A321-200 Neo sales . . . & then AIRBUS will have no choice but to suspend production of the base A321-200 Neo variant & continue with production & assembly of only the A321-200 Neo LR & A321-200 Neo XLR narrow body jets . . . diminishing demand of the A321-200 Neo base variant will in turn influence more sales of the A220-500 . . . Delta should start retiring it's existing fleet of A330-200 & A330-300 & replace them with brand new A350-900 & A350-1000 HGW wide body jets or A330-900 Neo for that matter . . . it's being said (unverified sources) that Delta plans to acquire no less than 113 - 118 brand new A350-900, A350-900 ULR & A350-1000 HGW wide body jets . . .

The A220 300 is the same size as a 319. The 500 if it comes out would be a close replacement of the A320 ,but will still be a couple seat shorter than an 320 The A220 would never cover the 321.

The A220-500 wouldn't canabalise the A321neo, the A220-500 wouldn't have the capacity or range of the A321neo. The A350 isn't a replacement for the A330, that's why they ordered A330neo, the A350 is a replacement for the older 777 models.
