As hunters, we are story tellers. We have been since the days of painting petroglyphs on the walls of caves. The modern day medium for telling hunting stories is video. Many hunters want to film their own hunt for the memories provided.
In this series, Randy Newberg has instructed his crew to guide viewers through the steps and equipment that will let them tell their story through video. We start with an explanation of the gear we use in Part 1. Link here - • Video Camera Equipment...
In this video, Part 2, we explain how you can build your own video camera kit for under $1,000. There are a ton of options to chose from. Just make sure it is equipment you are committed to using. Don't buy features you don't need.
In Part 3 we wrap it up by showing some tips that will make you much better at telling your story via video.

Randy, This was great as always, you and your team put out some awesome footage and content! The best advice was use what I already have, so my small Canon Vixia 20, my Sony NEX 6, my Tactacam & my Iphone (with a Carson Scope mount), I'm ready to start taking some video next season. Hey, I've been a story teller in sales my entire 45 + year career, so let's see if I can walk and chew gum without screwing up the hunt!

Hey Randy, I was curious as to what the tripods are you use that seem to be black and whit eon your other hunts.. seems they can bend at each joint for the best angle?

Canon EOS 80d with an 18-55mm lens, and a 55-300mm lens if you want an update to this. I'd also get a wide angle small camera like a gopro or the ThiEYE if you want something cheaper. If you're new you'll want something high quality, but with a protective case, or durable like a mid range ~400.00 sony camcorder or a high end gopro or equivalent, because if you are moving over rough terrain, or even just any outdoor terrain you WILL trip. and eventually bump your camera and kill a lens. in my experience there is no reason why ou want a 200.00 tripod. there are 30.00 options that are just as good. Spend some time looking at your options.

would a canon t6i be a good all around camera to use?

Do you ever use a GoPro or any other similar action cameras?

In rare instances. They are not good for distances beyond 10 yards. They are very hard on battery life. And they do have a bad "fish eye" affects in many applications.

I've had lots of point & soot cameras. I've settled on the Sony mirrorless A6000 and A6300 cameras. They are remarkable for both video and still images. You will see a lot of their footage used in our TV show. An A6300 might push the higher end of the budget, but the A6000, which has been replaced by the A6300, is still a great camera and price is coming down fast.

michael gallagher have a look at the Panasonic G7 as well can get them fairly cheap on eBay and still have some cash left over for some good glass! If your stuck on Sony id look to see if you can get a used a7s or a7sii is the better choice

Great input and ideas. I would like to see some tips on how to film with an iPhone as this seems a bit difficult to me.

Filming a hunt on an iPhone for anything other than close up or point of view shots is not practical. Thus, we didn't cover that.

I have a sony a6000. Any recommendations on lenses for this?
@Fresh_Tracks

I have a number of lenses for my 6300 - the kit 16-50mm, a couple primes, and the 55-210mm. I find that it is too much of a hassle to swap lenses around. For filming reasonably close subjects (think about interviews, close-ups, wide angle scenic shots, etc) the kit works well. It is hard to get enough "zoom" to get wildlife photos with even the 55-210mm lens (I'd say the animals would need to be within 100 yards, preferably closer to get a good shot). Depending on what your budget is like, you could grab one of the zoom lenses that span a wider range, like the 18-200mm (~$750) or 18-105mm (~$600). Sony also has a 24-240mm (~$900), a 100-400mm (~$2500), and a 70-300mm (~$1,100). I've never tried any of these firsthand. Our video cameras work well for getting video of wildlife from far away so we are fine with just the kit lens to supplement these. We occasionally use a Nikon P900 (~$600), which is a superzoom point and shoot, and that provides enough "reach" to get wildlife shots from far away.

You might want to inform your viewers to not place your talent in the shade with the background completely blown out and maybe center him in the frame too. Oh, and don't do jump cuts, really unprofessional. Techinique>gear. You should also speak to lens angles. Wides for close work with talent vs telephotos for distance.
