This is a neat video and really good information. I’d like to do it if I was younger. I’m 78 years old and still deer hunt 1 mile back in the National Forest. I still get around fair but it’s hard enough to just get myself back in let alone all the extra gear. I will say this yet, in 2018 I bought a Panasonic video camera. Luckily, that year on Nov. 14th I killed my best buck ever. An 11 point with perfect rack. I set the Panasonic camera up and took an after the kill video. It turned out great and I watch that video all the time. What a memory. I drug that buck out by myself, 1 mile up hill and down hill. It took me 7 hours and when I got it to the road and my truck I was too tired to load it myself.luckily some kind gentleman stopped just at dark and helped me. Have a good season and I’ll be watching.

most farm stores will have Permethrin 10 which is a concentrate. There are recipes online for mixing it for your clothing. Like Catman said you will save a fortune doing it this way.

I have no intention to film, however. I might for my kids. This video was awesome anyway. Just shows what you go through to get it to us! Thank You Cat!🦌

I started filming my hunts last deer season. I only used a GoPro because I wanted to experiment with it and see if I liked it. I really enjoyed filming my hunts and editing videos, so this season, I plan to pick it up a notch and use a camcorder. I got a Sony hdr-cx405 with a 128 GB SD card off eBay for $100 and made my own camera arm, which turned out nice. I'm super excited about next season and can't wait to get in a tree. Thanks for sharing your set-up and good luck this coming season.

Man, this advice is really good on self filming. I will let them go if I don't get them on film now. But zoom out and edit in is the best advice you can give on self filming. Love seeing how simple the set up is and how successful you have been. Great job man.

I got into self filming a couple years ago and have just about the same setup and will say that this is a very accurate educational video. Just know what you’re getting yourself into folks because self filming is tough especially on the ground with a bow. Great challenge but fun to learn! Goodluck to everyone this season!

Thank you. Much respect for you. I just about will not watch most hunting videos for many reasons. Most try to sell the idea that every piece of equipment MUST be top end $$$$$ If it's not 5 1/2 yrs old its a shame to kill it. The laughing after shooting the animal. Catman, you just love to hunt and you keep it real and i enjoy every video you make. Im 54 and have been hunting on my own since i was 8. All i hunt here in east texas is public lands and usually tag out every year. Ya ever want to come to east texas and hunt public lands id gladly put ya in some tried and true spots

Catman, I really like your equipment choices! I first bought a GoPro and was totally disappointed. The deer were just a speck shown on a big screen. I took it back. I’ve been filming hunts since 2004. That when we had giant Fred flintstone equipment! I learned the B roll of misses, trip and falls, forgotten equipment, overslept etc. makes an entertaining film the following year! I truly love watching your hunts! I live on the great Ohio River between Cincinnati & Louisville. Across the road is public hunting land of about 4,000 acres. Huge bucks are taken regularly. It’s tall hills and valleys, all wooded. Just as you might guess, the hunting I see taking place here is by hunters in a tree within 100 yards of their truck. 10% really get out and hike. The numbers of hunters per day at the check in is usually very low. Archery might average 30-40 hunters, firearms usually average 120 first weekend down to 30-40 through the week, back up to 75 to 90 the second weekend back down to 25-35 the following week and then 50-75 the final weekend. Muzzloading (2weeks) begins in a week as archery comes back into season (until mid January. Come on up to Splinters Ridge. Camping near by. Town is 16 miles away. Get a topo map

Permethrin, used it in the Army. You are one more voice of reason for me to start using it again. I know two people who have had their lives ruined from rocky mountain spotted fever here in TN. One was in a coma for a few weeks. They are both permanently messed up from the ticks. I have been dumb and lucky. Going to get some in the morning.

Nice job on this video! I’m toying with doing one fir my KZbin channel. I’m thinking most people should just get a TACTACAM and a GoPro and call it a day! You captured the kill shot and can analyze the hit with the TACTACAM, while getting your shot filmed with the GoPro. Self filming can screw up a hunt fast!

Hey Catman. Thanks for the video. Great advice and content as usual. I'm getting back into filming this year. I still have all my equipment and I have the nice sonyax53 with rode micro shotgun mic. When I started saddle hunting about 5 yrs ago I also stopped filming. So I'm comfortable hunting from the saddle I just need to figure out how to work my camera arm and base around the bridge. In my opinion(and keep in mind what I just said about never have done it lol) it would seem that your camera is too high and it won't pass underneath the bridge. I would actually prefer to have the camera high like that bc I hunt from a hybrid ROS and I straddle the tree on long sits. So I can't have the arm and base knee level. Can you please explain how you get all the shot angles on camera with it setup like that or also possibly make a short follow up video showing how you film and are able to shoot your bow while in a saddle. I know making videos is hard and that might be a big ask this close to season but if you can find time. Thanks

Good solid informative video. I wish you would of hit a little bit on the "after the shot filming". Probably the most common mistake. The hunter focuses on the animal up to the shot, but after they shoot, they just watch the animal run off. Stick with it... be prepared to follow the animal after the shot. It finishes out the video experience for the viewer. I learned that lesson the hard way. I started watching your videos when you started your channel. You've come a long ways and have become a good hunter. I enjoy your video's.
