It has a fully battened slap reefed main. All reefing lines lead aft to the cockpit so no need to go outside the cockpit in rough weather. Yacht exceedingly manageable single handed. The two of us have sailed her from the Caribbean to Bermuda and up the East coast of the States crossing the Gulf Stream in lightening and 50 knot gusts the yacht looked after us very well! We also sailed her around the north Caribbean islands to Cuba where we spent a month exploring before heading up to the States. Exploring the southern islands of the Caribbean was fun as well. We are both, very sadly, having to sell her for personal health reasons and age. We will miss 'our home' very much. Had loads of fun on her with friends and family coming and going to visit. It is a wire down the side of the hull!! On the domestic front:- It is a Miele washer/dryer, not that we used the dryer much as things dried within the hour below decks in wet weather by closing off the sliding door into the washer cabin and opening the engine room door there are hooks on the ceiling above to hang hangers. Otherwise in dry weather we rigged up a washing line and everything dried beautifully. No need for an iron. Also not mentioned by Aquaholic is the fact that there is a flat screen pop up television behind the cocktail cabinet area. So if it is a wet and rainy day in an anchorage we could watch films. This was good during lock down in Antigua last year. Also not mentioned she has two enormous aft deck lockers you can actually climb down into and a huge sail locker forward which also has the Asymmetric sail in. She has a four foot high locker under the sole by the chart table. Both sets of double bunks have very large deep drawers under them which Aqualholic missed. We did keep the decks looking great with biological washing powder and a flat scrubbing pad fixed to a pole, they looked like new and this could happen again. All the cockpit cushions were made in the States with self draining foam and Sunbrella fabric so no wet soggy cushions after a rain fall. The cockpit can be enclosed with zip on sides, again great for inclement weather when you come back on board you can strip off wet garments in the dry, hang them below decks outside the engine room. On board is a Watt and Sea which fixes aft plus solar panels which meant we did not have to run the generator for long lengths of time. Ron Holland's hull design is amazing and she slips through the water. We did Grenada to the Azores in 16 days. We did the ARC in 15 days Canaries to St. Lucia. Sailing down wind is a doddle with the main down and both staysail and genoa out on poles, if a squall comes up behind you you just roll them in like venetian blinds and back out again when it has passed, no need to call anybody else up on deck to help, the same with the reefing lines. Hope all this helps. If you need to speak and are serious then ask Sue Grant to give you our phone number.

I’m glad to see these detailed comments from the owner. A truly spectacular, serious blue water craft. I’m somewhat partial to Hallberg Rassy and I see many of the same great traits in the interior design. And what rigging - wow! I sincerely hope you find the right next owner of this beauty....she wants to be back out there seeing the world.

A yacht like this Discovery 58 is the perfect example that you don't even have to be into sailing to appreciate how beautiful this boat is, I personally was extremely surprised when you mentioned the front cabin as a guest cabin, that cabin is big enough to be in most boats the owners cabin, the wood inside is gorgeous, the storage capacity especially for food is impressive, the engine placement how easy it is to attend to it if necessary is impressive, sometimes when I see a 1 million plus yacht sometimes I wonder why, but this one is that kind of boat, when the price is mentioned, all makes sense, this is serious stuff, kinda shows even to the uneducated about sailing like myself, I can notice the focus on this beauty, another gem added to your list, thanks for posting, cheers! extra note: I hope that crack is "fixable", looks scary how big it is IF indeed is a crack

I’ll admit, when I saw that you were at Berthon, in the last video, I sincerely hoped that you would tour a Discovery. Thank you Nick, for not disappointing! One of the finest, true “blue water” monohulls made. Here we see one of the reason I prefer a centre cockpit design, that fantastic Master Suite. Every bit of the boat is designed for long term living, and crossing oceans. There are few details of this particular boat, that will need to be addressed before going back into the water, but Berthon will take care of them, I’m certain. Another superb Aquaholic Tour, don’t tell Sue, because I enjoy hers as well 😉

I'm not a sailor so I don't have a clue about genoas and spinakers and tacking and such. But this boat is just stunning. The amount of space is quite astonishing. The birds-eye maple is gorgeous and it has 2 heads! A lovely, lovely yacht. What I find most amazing is the automated furling mechanisms. Truly 21st century yachting. But like someone else has pointed out, when something goes wrong...

I like the motorised boat reviews you do a lot but these sailboat reviews are amazing (being a fan of all things sailing related). This hatch is beautiful and has obviously been very well cared for by her owners. If I had enough money this is the first thatch I have seen online that I would seriously consider buying. I realise it’s ‘different horses for different courses’ , as they say, with regards to motorised and sail videos, but the odd sail review is very much appreciated and compliments your other videos enormously. It gives people like myself a good platform to compare the pros and cons of each type. Keep up the good work kind sir. Fabulous video work as usual. Aquaholic is my go to channel when I want to dream about what I could have done with my life. Can’t wait for the next one.

Dinner parties on board were a doddle. So easy to work in the galley as well even in rough weather. I chose to have mainly drawers with non slip lining so easy to access, there is also a spice drawer so nothing rolls around or rattles. The microwave is a combi so it can be used as an oven and grill when plugged into a marina or running the generator. The freezer has six baskets so I had one for every type of food and great for long distance sailing. Hot drinks and food were easy to pass up to crew through the hatch in rough weather.

Very good, especially the galley. It is on the port side with the stove outboard. When you are hove to on the starboard tack (Sailboats have right of way on starboard.) in rough weather, the cooks will not have the hot contents of pots on the stove flung at them. The stove is on the low side. Double sinks are close to the centerline to drain easily on both tacks and are an easy reach to put hot pots taken from the stove.
@jonathanlyne6631
@jonathanlyne6631 3 жыл бұрын
In 50 years of cruising ( the last 5 on this yacht including 2 Atlantic crossings and previously 7 years on a Discovery 55 all the way to NZ) we have never hove to. If you did, frankly you would not choose which tack to be on depending on right of way under Colregs as it would be most unlikely you would meet another sailing yacht making way on either tack! The stove is gimballed and has good fiddles around to secure any pans assuming you are feeling well enough in that rough weather to want to eat.
@glyne4028
@glyne4028 3 жыл бұрын
You are right. Very easy to work in in rough weather. I prefer the galley to my kitchen at home! everything is within reach but still with working room. The sunken drainage board next to the sink amid ships is a great place to put things like coffee pots on a non slip mat so they wont go anywhere. Or just to leave the dishes to dry safely. I had a spice drawer made as well so spice jars don't roll around. The microwave is a combi so can be used as a spare oven with the generator on or plugged into a marina. The huge fridge and freezer means I don't have to go to the supermarket or market for a month or so if I don't wish to or can't as we are at sea.

That is a crazy nice boat. The couple behind Distant Shores (TV series and sailing channel on this platform), Paul and Sheryl Shard, used to own a Discovery, though that one with a lifting keel, so they could go into very shallow waters, for instance in the Bahamas, and also dry fall. Now they build a custom aluminium explorer sailboat on a shipyard in the Netherlands. Only thing I would chance on this boat, if I could ever afford it, where to replace the current dodger with a hard dodger instead and probably extend it for some solar and less exposed sailing. Incredible nice layout of the boat.

SAILS:- Main:- fully battened, reefing lines leading aft to the cockpit, manageable by one person, No need to go out on deck in rough weather. Down wind sailing, have the main down, staysail and Genoa out on opposite sides held out by whisker poles, if there is a squall coming up just furl in like a venetian blind once past furl out again, easy. No need to call anybody else up on deck. She also has an asymmetric stowed in the large forward sail locker, which one early morning my husband put up on his own whilst I was asleep!! COCKPIT:- We chose one wheel rather than two as we felt when we needed to be at the wheel it would be rough and stormy much safer to be in the cockpit rather than out at the sides and more comfortable. Cockpit cushions were made in America, 2" thick, Sunbrella self draining foam so they stay dry and dry out after rain very quickly. Aft seats on aft deck great for evening drinks or just watching the world go by. Everything is manageable from the cockpit. The table is in two halves when fully out 6 can sit comfortably around it. There is stowage in the middle of the table. STOWAGE:-on deck:- Large sail locker forward, two large aft deck lockers very deep, steps locker for snorkeling gear. Below decks:- massive amount of stowage what Nick did not show you were the huge drawers under both double bunks as well as what he did show you. Stowage under all the soles of the cabins. Stowage under the galley sole which I did in baskets. Stowage under the seats of the saloon which are deep. Stowage under the sole of the saloon. A 4' deep climb in locker under the sole by the chart table. We stowed our wine under the sole of the passage way. Medical gear was stowed in the large locker just forward of the steps to the corridor. Shelves for linen in the laundry/tech room above the washer/dryer. That room/cabin makes a good drying area as well from hooks in the ceiling, engine room door open and sliding door shut. GALLEY:- Large freezer with 6 baskets so food can be separated, veg, meat, fish, cheeses ect. great for long distance sailing. Massive fridge as well, which has brackets on the front of the shelves to stop things falling out. Drawers in galley are amazing plus a spice drawers so all those tiny bottles don't role around. Sunken drainage board to put the coffee pot or anything else when cooking at sea or even just to leave the washed dishes to drain. We opted not to have a dishwasher, we never used the one on our old yacht there is room for one if you want one plumbed in though. Microwave is a combined electric fan oven as well for use when in a marina or running the generator. Gas oven is large with 5 burners middle for a wok. Plenty of room for food prep, I did have a Magimix on board plenty of plugs for electrics. SALOON:- Great to sit in when its pouring with rain outside and to entertain up to 8 around the table which expands. Lovely to be able to see what is going on outside when below decks. Flat screen TV pops up behind cocktail cabinet and drinks fridge. NAVIGATION AREA:- Large chart drawer above cocktail cupboard. The yacht can be controlled from the navigation area below decks if the weather is very wet. AIS will worn you of ships around but also I would pop up on deck every fifteen mins to check things over. As this area is high it is easy to see out of the saloon windows. Saloon windows are strong, we have been in large seas in her and 50 knots gusts crossing the gulf stream. The yacht has air conditioning and a heating system. The amount of light below decks is amazing. The showers are like power showers, strong. The loos are electric flushing. FLOORING is marine Amtico flooring, very hard wearing and easy to look after but looks just like light oak wood. The rest of the wood throughout the yacht is maple with birds eye maple. We love her and so sad to sell what was our home, but age and health mean we have to so that is sad. AND BY THE WAY IT IS NOT A CRACK DOWN THE HULL HA HA!! ITS A WIRE WHICH THE CAMERA HAS CAUGHT AT A CERTAIN ANGLE. Can't believe how often it is mentioned. Berthon would never sell a yacht with such a default. Not sure what I have missed out on now, but any questions do ask and we would be more than happy to answer. STEPS TO SALOON from cockpit are three steps, easy, and such a cool design. we have put in stowage behind them for shackles, sailing gloves and other 'bits'. Walking around below decks in rough weather is easy as there are handholds everywhere. Draft is 8' Keel weighs 10 tons. She is sturdy and steady in seas and fast to sail. It took us 16 days to sail back across the Atlantic from Grenada to the Azores. 15 Days from the Canaries to St. Lucia (no motor used then at all). Other than the Generator she has solar panels aft over the davits and a watt & sea generator when you want to use it, this cut down the use of the Generator to two hours a day. Many comments mention the price, a new one is 1.5 million basic, she is 5 years old and has a huge amount of extras on her, too many to mention here but a very expensive package of extras.

Nice to see sailboats here as well Nick! I actually think you could steer the boat from that navigational station inside, with the autopilot remote control next to the VHF radio. Greetings from Finland🇫🇮 PS. Always nice to see Botnia Targas here. Would be nice to see more videos of Finnish boats such as Swan, Baltic, Nordstar etc. Keep up the good work! You are by far the best boat youtuber there is!

Yes you certainly can steer and keep a watch from the Navigation seat as you have 180 deg vision and the AIS will warn you if a freighter is coming up astern!

Cheers Nick, cool to watch and learn about different boats. I'm going to have to watch a sailing vid sometime to get a better idea of the attraction to sailing, all I imagine is trying to stand at a 45 degree angle all the time and I'm sure that can't be accurate. 👍❤️🇬🇧

What a stunning boat (for a sailing boat that is). The packaging just seams out of this world. If boat designers would design house bathrooms and kitchens we would all live in luxury. Great review as per usual Nick... No wave today???

I like the idea of the sailing yachts in being fuel efficient and letting the wind carry you. I don't know if I would like the heeling as compared to a catamaran. I have no experience on either so this is just an armchair captain's landlubber opinion.

The good news - I have no concept of being mid ocean with just a few bed sheets to power me home. The better news. I never will have that experience. However, if this boat were required to always be in sight of land, then I'd gladly take a ride. With the technicals out of the way, I must say the designers / builders have done an amazing job with space and finish. Again, kept close to shore, this is a beautiful boat - Thanks for sharing, Nick.

She is safer and more comfortable crossing an ocean than a motor yacht. We have a very good size engine on board with plenty of fuel for when there is no wind. But sailing she is not bashing uncomfortably into waves and it is so much quieter as well.
