Hi Julie. Thank You for this Tutorial. Some time back I decided to recreate a scale model of my Grandparents House from my childhood. Hours and hours of research to find a picture of the same furniture to go into the rooms. I said to my husband I need to find a miniaturist from England to follow on You Tube as they may make some of the furniture I am looking for. -We Live in Australia- Your name came up on my search. I have been following along with you for some time but I didn't realise you were in England until I watched the Out and About with Julie. Thank You again for your wonderful work and tutorials.

I was skeptical about using shoe polish on wood. But I am impressed with the results. I hope you have more tutorials showing this process. Thank you for expanding horizons!

Absolutely tip top tutorial I am building a 1/12 scale RC model South Devon Crab fishing boat and they used to use Tea Chests to put the crab in for landing to market and I need to make about a dozen of these babies. Brilliant.

Hi Julie first thank you so much for sharing I have learnt so much. I have found the best way of creating the letters is to buy transfer or decal paper which is film you peel off. If you have print facilities you can set your script up on the computer, print and apply as you have with the letraset. You can make them any size you want. You can buy them on eBay or from most craft shop such as hobby craft.Hope that helps.

Hi Marcus, thank you for the tip, I have used decal paper in other projects, so will give it a go.

Hi Julie, if your lettering is 3mm, it will be approx 8.5pt (point) so you may have better luck in searching for a point size instead. For example I found a Futura Demi Bold 6pt (1.5mm) - a sans serif type like Helvetica on Ebay. There were quite a few typefaces available. Hope that helps.

Thank you, that's helpful. I bought a sheet of 8 point (I think) from Ebay, and though the font is fine for the tea chests, I want a nicer font for other pieces. Thanks for your help.

I'm really enjoying watching all your tutorials on miniature furniture and would love to give it a go! However, over here in Australia I cannot get my hands on any Obeche - I am struggling to find enough of the right thickness in Basswood sheet - I can find Basswood ply sheets though - would this work as a substitute for the craftwoods you recommend? Or should I just give up? Thank you :)
@JulieWarren

No, please don't give up! I haven't used basswood ply, but if it's a layered wood, you may find it hard to cut. It depends upon the thickness, too, as the cutting lists won't work out if you're using a thicker wood. I sell Basswood and Obeche in my Etsy shop and I ship worldwide, if that's an option for you? www.etsy.com/uk/shop/bitsandpiecesbyjulie I hope you won't give up!

@@JulieWarren Thank you for replying :) I'm trying so very hard to find something in place of the obeche and bass. I have gotten my hands on basswood sheet in 1.5mm and that's all that I can find over here - which is something! There is premium balsa too, I am going to buy a couple of sheets in that to see what it's like. I have already added the wood from your shop to my cart yesterday! the only thing holding me back is the shipping costs....oh and the wait time .... I'm not the most patient of women!! especially when I want to try something new and fun to make!

Hi Jill, I love your tutorials!! I saw at kitkraft.com they sell 1/16" (1.58 mm), 3/32" (2.38 mm), 1/8" (3.17 mm) & 3/16" (4.76 mm) dry rub transfer letters. All four sizes come on one sheet and it looks like they have a nice selection of fonts as well. They also ship worldwide. Hope this helps!

As you wanted to make your printed characters smaller, I know how you could do it in MS Word if it helps? You highlight your work & manually over-ride the number in the font size box by typing a smaller number, once you've finished typing your text. It'll be bit of trial & error til you get the size you want & it's best to leave it til the end as the script can get too small to read on the monitor. You could fit quite a few copies on 1 sheet of A4 paper & just cut them out as you need them. Then there's mediums you can buy from craft shops to transfer the images onto your wood. The type of medium depends on whether you printed on a bubble-jet printer or a toner printer at a copy shop. (That will also affect whether you just do a normal print or if you have to flip it into a mirror image before you print) ... There are quite a few vids on YT about the 'transfer to wood' part of the process, not sure if it will give the result you want. :)

Thank you Joanne, but it was really the Letraset letters I was looking for in a smaller size, you know, the transfers that you rub on directly from a sheet of clear acetate. I can readily find the 3mm letters, but I'm having trouble finding 2mm or smaller. I'm thinking of using them to make 'Laundry' signs and that sort of thing. :)

For a variety of dry transfer decals, try Woodland Scenics (woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/category/DecalsGraphics). The smallest I found was 1/32" in their mini-series. Hope this helps and isn't too late. I am coming late to your channel and catching up on the videos.
